Twits Notes:
(2/25) First-place
Tom made the early Friday afternoon trek down to Plymouth, with a
slight curse by Eric, who earlier sent an email to the league babbling
something about the last team to win 40 games in a season, blah blah
blah. It was a long shot for Tom--he'd have to win 7 of 8 to reach
40--but he was coming off a sweep of Harold, so......
In
Game 1, the great Arrieta pitched the Manatees to an breezy 6-2 win,
going the distance and giving up 4 hits, zero walks, & recording a
nifty 10 Ks, 7 looking. The only hit through 7 was a solo blast from
Arenado, and by the time the Loons mustered two doubles in the 8th to
score a run, the game was essentially over.
But
then, between games one and two, Tom, feeling pretty good about life
after the win, and carrying a pleasant buzz from a drinkable yet
somewhat flat double chocolate stout, made a fatal mistake. He smoked a
peace pipe with the Smoking Loon's manager.
Three
losses later, a gracious Tom (who will likely face off against Eric
again in the first round of the playoffs) left Plymouth still in a good
mood, still in first, yet feigning the usual "well that about does it
for me, the season's all but over now" guff.
So
what happened? Did his one-game karma really go "up in smoke?" We'll
probably never know. But Eric certainly thinks so. He felt the karma
change around the 4th inning of game 2, when a two-out single was
followed by a triple to knot the game at one. After Tom went 1-2-3 in
the top of the 5th, Eric felt the change again in the bottom of the
frame, when Fielder stroked a pinch-hit single to score Arenado from
second. And then he felt it one more time an inning later, when Calhoun
crushed a pinch-hit homer. Shit like this doesn't happen without "strong
feelings."
"We're a very sensitive group of guys," said Calhoun after the game, wiping back a tear. Final: 3-1.
Game
3 was downright cruel to Tom. Trailing 1-0 in the 5th, Harper muffed a
popup down the line for a two-run error, and though the T's mounted a
valiant comeback behind a 2-run BP shot from Trout (HR 1-3, rolling a
1), it wasn't enough to overcome the Loon pen
And
then there was game 4: Tom scored single runs in the 1st and 9th, but
gave up 8 to the other guys, who blasted a season-high 4 dingers.
Of
note, Eric's late season additions acquitted themselves well, as Tony
Watson tosses 3.6 innings with a save and one run surrendered, and
Enrique Hernanadez tripled and homered in wins.
The
3 wins for the Loons makes them 6-2 for the season against the
pre-season faves. "What this means," said the Loon GM, "is that we're
fucked. You're talking Arrieta in games 1, 4 and 7. Like that's gonna
turn out well."
(2/24) Constantinople opened up a three game lead over FW after
sweeping New Orleans last night. The sweep means Eric's magic
number is 4 to clinch a playoff spot.
Harold
could not take a break as the ballpark rained success upon CN. The
only bad luck for CN was the injury of Bryce Harper and Alex Gordon.
CN
came in with 8 pitchers eligible to be tired and Arrieta needing to go the
distance. They scored 4 on a grand slam ball park homer by Donaldson in
the first inning. Then the bats went to sleep until Harold knocked
Arrieta out in the 9th
– 2 men on and Rasmus playing for the injured
Harper made a 2 base error, then Arrieta got Hosmer for the first out,
but after a ballpark single, he hit the showers. Kelley came
out and faced
the mutant Parker who hit a triple off Kelley’s card to tie the
game. Grandal
walked and Gregorious laid down a suicide squeeze. A "12"
and he
popped it up into a double play and we go to the bottom of the 9th.
Three straight pinch hitters for CN and with one man on Trout came up and hit a
clean homerun for the walk off win.
Game 2
saw CN have a ballpark homer robbed, but Harold could not push a run across and
CN wins it 6-0.
Game 3
saw CN hit 4 ball park homers to win 8-3 in a game that was never close.
Game
4 had CN and NO tied at 3 after 4, but 2 homers over 4 innings allowed CN
to pull it out 7-3 to cement the sweep.
Draft Day, April 1
(2/22) A
bittersweet end to North Dakota's season (before the big boys play over
the next 4 days), finishing as arguably the hottest team in the league
(12-4).
We
thought it'd be a meaningless quick series; the Strato gods had other
ideas. I figured if I could actually sweep Jeff, ND would finish 28-28
and have a small chance of a one-game playoff. ND jumped to a 2-0 lead
in game 1, but 3 homers by WES (Freeman, Cargo, Andrés) made it 4-2 in
the 7th. Shaw's 2-run homer tied it for ND in the bottom of the 7th.
ND
had 2 on with one out in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't score.
They had 2 on with 2 out in the bnottom of the 14th, but
Encarnacion hit into a clutch out. So now its the 15th and while
I have to win this game, my relievers are running short of innings (and
I cant bring in a position player to pitch having already emtied my
bench). So in the 16th, I bring in a tired Osuna.
Meanwhile, Jeff has a similar dilemma and leaves in a tired
Chapman. Goldschmidt ends the game with a tired rbi single in the
bottom of the 16th (an unearned run thanks to Freeman's error).
The
rest of the series was not nearly as exciting (other than 4 of my
pitchers arms falling off and 2 limited batters shoulders popping off).
I'd like to either burn my team or bury them in the snow, but
there's a tiny chance of Eric choking (3-9) while Harold does not take
full advantage and ND is in a one-game playoff. So, the pyre is
on hold.
Draft Day, Saturday April 1.
(2/20) North Dakota (now 9-3 after throwing in the towel at the
trading deadline by trading away Grichuck and Hernandez) dealt a
serious blow to New Orleans' playoff chances earlier this evening in
Marblehead. Honestly, I'm a little pissed at my team for starting
to play so well too late in the season as the vaunted power
mysteriously lacking for too much of the season has been on full
display recently. I do blame bad luck, but it evens out over the
long term; I would be amiss to not mention 2013-2014 when I somehow won
17 of my last 20 games (which includes the post-season) to win the
Championship after also giving up at the trading deadline. I'm
seeing a pattern here.
Anyway, it was actually a good series.
Cruz's solo shot in the 4th inning of game 1 off Gray was
answered by Hosmer's 2-run homer for NO in the 6th off Archer.
ND's K. Davis's homer tied it 2-2 in the 7th. Bottom of the
9th, with two on and one out. ND pinch hits Napoli against lefty J.
Lopez. Harold brings Ziegler in. Big Papi strolls to the
plate to pinch-hit for Napoli. Big Papi does it a again - a 3-run
pinch-hit game winning home run.
In game 2, 2 more solo homers
(K. Davis and Goldschmidt) give ND a 2-0 lead. 2 sac flies in the
5th make it a 4-1 game. K. Bryant's 2-out single in the 7th makes
it a 4-2 game, but Herrera, Benoit and Kimbrel shut the door and North
Dakota wins again.
In game 3, another North Dakota solo homer
(Napoli off Sale) gives ND another lead, but Jose Bautista cracks a
2-run shot off Osuna in the 8th to give Harold the 2-1 lead. K.
Davis's 3rd solo HR of the series in the nottom of the 8th ties it 2-2.
That half inning would see 6 different New Orleans pitchers (and
three ND pinch-hitters) but no more runs. Bottom of the 9th,
Dustin Pedroia hits a walk-off homer run off Familia, and ND has a
chance for the sweep.
Game 4 was a nail-biter. Cruz's
homer (ND's 7th solo) in the 1st stands up until the 9th inning (Lackey
and Cueto both dazzling). In the top of the 9th, New Orleans (JD
Martinez) finally nails its first righty BP homer of the series to tie
the game at 1-1. ND leaves the bases loaded in the bottom of the
9th, an inning featuring two intentional walks by Harold, a 2 base
error by his "1" shortsop, and a SSX double play. Top of the 12th
inning, Hosmer and Realmuto smack homers to make it 4-1. ND has
one more chance in the bottom of the 12th with 2 on and Encarnacion up,
but Robertson gets him to end it and New Orleans salvages a sliver of
hope entering a crazy final week.
Draft Day April 1
(2/19) Oceanus moved to within one game of 2nd and 2 games of
first place as the top teams remain tightly bunched heading into the
season's final week.
Bay City came into the unfriendly confines of the Rehoboth Parking lot
and was treated rudely by the hometown team as Oceanus took 3 out of 4.
In
game 1, the key moment occurred in the bottom of the 6th with the game
knotted at 0-0. Former Bay City-ite Mike Moustakas was at 1st with
nobody out. Francisco Cervelli came to the plate and Robin gave up
computer control before moving her infield back. We decided to have
whatever happened with Cervelli not count so we could undo the play and
allow Robin to set her defense. This led to a computer freeze that took
about ten minutes to resolve. Eventually, when play resumed, Cervelli
(a 'C' bunter) bunted and beat it out. Altuve then sacrificed the
runners over, Choo singled a run in and Votto hit an RBI ground out.
And that was it. Bay City could not score against the combination of
Keuchel, Uehara, Warren and Gregerson. Warren picked up a win,
Gregerson a save and Gerritt Cole was the tough-luck loser.
In
game 2 Bay City hit Cy Young candidate David Price hard and raced out
to a 6-0 lead by the top of the 5th, including a ballpark HR (on a 1)
for Devon Travis. The Assholes fought back to 6-3 after 6 so it wasn't a
complete laugher. But nothing happened after that. Bay City outhit
Oceanus 13-4 including 5 doubles (to none). Travis was the star, going
3-4. Hamels pitched effectively for the win and Britton got a 2-inning
save.
Bay City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first inning of game 3 against Corey Kluber, who was still smarting
from a recent Constantinople pounding. Singleton runs in the bottom of
the 2nd and 4th tied the game for Oceanus. Both teams scored a run in
the 5th. But then the floodgates opened in the bottom of the 6th as the
Assholes scored 4. Oceanus added an insurance run in the 7th and
cruised to an 8-3 victory. Oceanus hit 4 HR in the game as the Bay City
combination of Gibson, Britton and Ramos all took a statistical
beating. Kluber pitched 7 solid innings for the win. Human gasoline
can Adam Warren added a surprisingly effective 2 shutout innings.
The
question on everyone's mind prior to game 4 was, would Bay City salvage
a split. It looked bad for them right away as Oceanus plated 3 in the
bottom of the first. But Bay City clawed their way back against an
ineffective Felix Hernandez getting single runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th
innings. The Assholes responded with a run in the bottom of the 4th and
it was still a one-run affair heading into the bottom of the 6th. Once
again, Oceanus exploded for 4 runs and then added 5 more in the bottom
of the 8th. None of the Bay City pitchers (Gallardo, Strop, Givens,
Ramos) had their good stuff in this one. Votto hit a grand slam and had
5 RBI. Inciarte and Panik had 3 RBI each. Crush Davis finally came
through with a HR for Bay City. Adam Warren vultured a win and lowered
his ERA to a not horrible 4.28 for the season. The Asshole bullpen
overall pitched 5.1 innings of shutout relief.
For
the series, in a shocking lack of karma, former Bay City players
Michael Brantley and Mike Moustakas went 3-14 and 2-17 respectively, and
Brantley was thrown out at the plate.
Draft Day April 1.
(2/12) Constantinople and Future Wax both won series this weekend to keep pace with one another. At Oceanus:
Game 1: The battle of the aces led to 23 strikeouts and 1 run. CN won the game in the sixth on a double by Donaldson and an RBI double by Rizzo.
Game 2: OC's David Price takes a cue from the first game and pitched a shutout for a 4-0 win as Jed's mutant Mahtook hit a 3 run dinger in a game that was a laugher for the home team.
Game 3: The defensive low scoring series ended as CN came out and scored early and often to win 15-2. Both sides had 2 homers but CN just had all the luck in this one. Crawford had 2 errors and Choo had an error and gave up a couple of doubles as it was just sloppy play overall.
Game 4: This was a Computer classic. After 9 innings, it was all tied up at 4-4. The bottom of the 10th Harper kicks a ball for a 3 base error and with 2 outs and a man on 3rd. OC's Texeira came to bat and the unidentified CN pitcher threw a wild pitch to give OC the win. However it was not a Catcher X wild pitch, but the random super advanced rule wild pitch rule that sometimes occurs when you try and have lowe fences as well. The computer ends the game with no chance to undo. So our intrepid computer players set up a game to be played from that point, but oops forgot that CN was the away team. The managers decide to ignore that half inning and get to the 2 out Texeira at bat. He strikes out. On the 3rd try to finish the game, both relievers start the game and the lineups are set to reflect the inning 11 order. CN's Escobar makes an out, Trout gets a hit and Harper (of the 3 base error) comes up and hits a 2 run homer. The other half of the inning went 1-2-3 and CN pulls out the strange 3-1 series win.
.....
Meanwhile, in Natick, Randy rubbed salt in Jeff's ballpark wound by hitting something like 5 out 6
ballparks (HR 1-5) to win 3 out of 4 including a 17 inning marathon.
.....
Draft Day, Saturday April 1.
(2/5) Tom's sweep of Bay City combined with Oceanus's series win over
Future Wax put Constantinople into first place, with one game
separating the top three teams. It was an unlucky day for BC. CN got up early in game 1 on home runs by
Harper, Donaldson and Rizzo to go up 7-1. Robin came roaring back to tag
Arrieta for 5 runs but fell just short to lose 7-6.
In game 2, CN got brilliant
pitching from Garcia and 3 relievers to blank BC (allowing only one extra base
hit on a LFx chance) for a final score of 7-0.
McCullers tried to rally BC in
game 3 and it was 3-3 going into the 8th when Forsythe led off with
a ballpark homer chance 1-19. But Tom
rolls a 20 and with the low fences, it’s caught by Marte. No matter as Harper
and Trout followed with back to back homers and McCullers hit the
showers. Donaldson took Zack Britton deep to make the game 6-3 which held
up for the CN victory.
In the finale, BC hoped to
avoid the sweep, but to no avail as CN scored 7 for a 7-4 victory and series
sweep.
The fence came into account
multiple times in the series. BC Travis hit a homer 1-6 flyout and got a
7 but Trout came down with the ball. Rizzo hit a ball park homer 20 that
was caught by Marte. Raburn hit a ballpark homer 19 that bounced off of
Piscotty’s glove for the round tripper. Miggy hit a ballpark homer 19
that Gordon pulled in for the out. Forsythe did one as noted above 20-15 also
caught by Marte. BC also missed a ball park single chance (1-19).
So for a generous ballpark the
fence came into play 4 times on ballpark homers resulting in 3 outs and one
homer split that ended up in an out. It also allowed 8 other homers on
ballpark chances.
Go Pats!Meanwhile...
Visiting Future Wax was treated rudely in
Oceanus' custom-designed home part as the Assholes took the series 3 games to
1.
The first game was a seesaw affair where
Oceanus ultimately claimed a 7-4 victory. The Assholes took the lead 2-0
only to have a 6th-inning Seager grand slam put them in a 4-2 bind. This
after Oceanus intentionally walked ultimate lefty killer Stanton to load the
bases (eliciting a shocked "really" from Randy). Oceanus' strategy
of not letting Stanton beat them had backfired and with Greinke pitching, the
situation seemed dire. But Oceanus scratched back a run in the bottom of
the 6th to tighten it up and then had one of those "Strat-O" innings
in the 8th where nothing could go wrong against lefty relievers McGee and
Alvarez (6 hits in the inning). Vizcaino and Gregerson pitched scoreless
relief for the Assholes, with Gregerson getting the save. Not shown in
the box score was the plethora of "picks" for both sides - lots of 1's,
2's and 3's. It was a classic Strat-O-Matic game, where both sides felt
they could've / should've won, and I believe it was this game where Randy said
he had "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory."
In game 2 Oceanus jumped to a 4-0 lead
against Kershaw in the bottom of the 4th, breaking up a strong pitchers' duel
with Price. Future Wax could never get its offense untracked.
Eithier hit a solo shot in the 9th but overall the bats were pretty silent with
just 4 hits. Moustakas was the hero for Oceanus with a 2-RBI single to
provide essentially the game-winning hit. Price allowed 3 hits and 1 walk
in 5 innings for his 7th win of the year. Cody (not Chad) Allen, in spite
of allowing the Ethier HR, got the save, with 3 solid innings of relief.
In the end, 5-1 Assholes.
Game 3 ended up a 8-3 laugher for Future
Wax. They scored 3 runs in the first and 2 in the second, which with
Scherzer on the mound should've provided a comfortable lead. But the
Assholes score 3 runs of their own so they were only down 5-3. Future Wax
added a run in the 5th but at that point there was still a bit of hope left for
Oceanus. With 2 more runs in the 6th, Future Wax had a commanding 8-3
advantage and as it turned out, the Assholes never mounted any serious challenge.
Scherzer scattered 9 hits for a complete-game victory. Corey Kluber was
hammered for 6 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings. Seager and Stanton hit HRs
for Future Wax and Moustakas had a dinger for Oceanus.
Future Wax was looking for the satisfying
split in game 4 and did jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a McCann
HR. But Oceanus responded with 3 runs in the third, another in the 4th
and an insurance run in the 7th as Future Wax was stymied by 5 innings of
shutout relief from Warren, Uehara, Gregerson and O'Day, culminating in a 5-1
Oceanus win. Both teams got 9 hits but the Assholes were able to string
them together more effectively. A key play occurred when Randy decided to
steal 2nd with Machado on a 1-14 chance. I had just removed Hernandez,
whose +3 hold would have given Machado a 1-17 chance. The split was a
16. Randy subsequently got a couple of hits and so would at a minimum
have had bases loaded with no outs. Instead, no runs came in and the best
Future Wax chance came to naught.
Joey Votto was the overall star for Oceanus,
hitting .538 for the series with a couple of doubles and a HR. The
Assholes had 15 doubles to make up for only 2 HR and hit .308 as a team.
For Future Wax, Seager hit .545 with a couple of HR (including the game 1 GS),
Ethier hit .571, Machado .500 and McCann .462.
Draft Day, Saturday, April 1
(1/30)
North Dakota's bats finally came alive in their home park, smashing 12
home runs for the series as they nearly swept a distraught Oceanus
club, knocking the visitors back into 3rd place (by percentage points).
A
pretty good pitchers' duel (Keuchel vs. deGrom) in game 1 was decided
emphatically on a walk-off homer by David Ortiz's 10th home run of the
year.
The teams attempted to play game 2 but Internet Strat-O
refused to co-operate. The fact that game 1 had been played without a
hitch made it all the more perplexing and frustrating. After several
futile attempts, they reverted back to using "Any Meeting". Another
glitch,
Arnie forgetting to "save" the box score for game 2 (it usually does
that automatically) meant that we don't have specifics for that,
although oddly (and luckily) the computer still counted it as a league
game for the total stats. North Dakota did win that game easily 7-2.
In
game 3, Matt Carpenter homered off O'Day in the bottom of the 9th
(O'Day's first blown save of the season) to tie the game 2-2, then
Mookie Betts hit North Dakota's second walk-off homer of the series - this one a pinch-hit homer in the 10th inning.
ND
went for the sweep in the finale, carrying a 4-0 lead into the 8th.
But OC scored two in the 8th and then tied it in the 9th on
Tulowitzki's pinch-hit 2-run double. In the 11th Moustakas blasted a
2-run homer off Osuna for a 6-4 OC lead. Betts homered in the bottom
of the 11th to make Jed sweat, but O'Day hung on to win it and avoid
the sweep.
North
Dakota, with a team ERA of 4.78 coming into the series had a 2.77 ERA
and held OC to a .193 batting average. Travis Shaw batted .500
and hit 3 homers.
The two teams (along with Eric) can now call up a 26th man...Draft Day, Saturday April 1.
(1/25) It
was a sweep for visiting Oceanus, and not
fun for the home team in this series, as Oceanus leap-frogged over
Constantinople into 2nd place. There was one extra inning game
that obviously could have easily gone to WES. And WES led 5-1 in
the 4th
game before Oceanus stormed back. So, as usual, with just a roll
here or
a split card pick there, it could have been a different outcome.
Oceanus hit .362 as a team, benefiting from
game 1 where Dan Haren was left in to absorb a pounding. Inciarte hit 3
HR, at least 2 of which were BP (1-5). O'Day picked up 2 saves and now
has 14. Cody Allen managed to pick up 2 victories. The bullpen
overall didn't allow any runs in 12.2 innings.
WES hit .279 as a team but only one
HR. The team ERA was 7.82, skewed by Haren's 19.00. Markakis hit
.438, Turner .375 and Jones .353.
Here are the slightly-edited
computer-generated summaries:
Game 1: First baseman Joey Votto blasted 2 homeruns
and had 4 RBI and Dallas Keuchel pitched a complete game as Oceanus destroyed
What Eric Said? by a score of 19 to 5.
Votto was a one-man wrecking crew. He
hit a bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning, blasted a solo shot in the 5th
inning, stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 6th inning and
delivered a base-hit which scored a run in the 7th inning. Oceanus
provided plenty of action in the 6th inning when they had 5 runs on 4 hits and
the 8th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits. The Oceanus offense was as
consistent as it was powerful. They scored in every inning, making a joke
of the What Eric Said? pitching.
Keuchel lasted until the end allowing 5 runs
for the win. The loss was charged to Dan Haren. He served up 4 gopher
balls in 9 innings.
Game 2: Third baseman Mike Moustakas had 2 base hits
at the ballpark as the Assholes beat What Eric Said? in 11 innings by the count
of 5 to 3.
Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full
innings. Finally, Oceanus prevailed in the 11th inning. Michael
Brantley started the inning off right when he doubled. Francisco Cervelli
stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Shin-Soo
Choo was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Joe Ross then
fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any
event, it got by him and was ruled a passed ball which plated a run.
Ender Inciarte came to the plate and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'.
Oceanus had 13 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Cody Allen who allowed no
runs in 1 inning. Allen got help from Darren O'Day who was credited with his
13th save. Ross was given the loss in relief.
Game 3: Shin-Soo Choo connected with a 'big fly' as
Oceanus beat What Eric Said? by the count of 3 to 1.
Corey Kluber earned his pay with a solid
performance for Oceanus. He was reached for 5 hits and 4 walks in 6
innings. Oceanus had 9 hits for the afternoon.
Darren O'Day got the save, his 14th.
The losing pitcher was former Asshole Lance Lynn. He was touched for 9
hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Game 4: The Assholes bested What Eric Said? by a 8
to 5 score at the ballpark.
Behind 5-1 after 5 innings, Oceanus made it
5-4 after 6. Then Oceanus jumped on top of What Eric Said? in the top of
the 7th inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. Oceanus had 14 hits
for the afternoon while What Eric Said? had 11.
Cody Allen got credit for the victory,
pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Koji Uehara recorded the save.
The loss was charged to Aroldis Chapman in relief.
(1/24) Tom and Randy’s showdown for
first place led to a 20-inning affair in game 1 - the 2nd longest
game (tied with two other games) in league history.
Game 1: During the first
nine innings, both teams had lead off triples. Martin led off the 5th
with a Homer 1-19, 20 triple. Tripled and then A bunter Alcides Escobar
laid down a bad suicide squeeze to get Martin cut down at home. Russell
led of the 7th with a triple for FW and Arrieta then struck out the
next three batters.
Its 0-0 after 10.
CN puts up 2 runs on a 2 run
homer in the 11th by Sano and then Martin hit his second triple of
the game, but was left on third again on what turned to be an important run. The
Wax came back in the bottom of the 11th with a leadoff homerun by
Russell. This is followed by a BS* (1-6), ssx for a short single and two
walks to tie the game at 2-2 with no outs and the bases loaded. A K and a
double play later and the teams are on to the 1th inning. Both teams had
1 inning relievers pitch the 15th-19th innings. The
20th saw a new FW pitcher Carson Smith come out of the pen and he gave
up 3 runs. CN followed with Will Harris for the save and it was a 20
inning 5-2 win.
Randy refused CN’s offer to
count game 1 as 2 wins and just skip Kershaw’s game 2 start.
Kershaw won game 2 3-1, highlighted
by back to back homers by Ethier and Seager to seal the game. CN missed
two BPHRs and had a clutch out in the game.
Wax continued to dominate as
Scherzer won a game 3 laugher 4-1.
Game 4 looked bad for the
Manatees as Wax got out to an early 2-1 lead and then Randy rolled a BPHR,
announced that they were due and rolled a “2” (where BPHR are 1-2). It was a homer for a 3 run lead. (It was his
3rd BPHR chance of the series and he ended up 1-4 in BPHR
chances. CN went 0 for 5 in the series) A Mike Trout homer got the game
to 3-2 after 6. CN’s 8th inning featured a Harper double and
Trout strikeout to set up a clutch situation for Raburn. Alex Gordon was
called on and he delivered a clutch hit to tie the game 3-3. Donaldson
followed and hit a second clutch hit to put CN up 4-3 and they held on for the
series split.
Draft Day Saturday, April 1? (still waiting on Jeff to confirm).
(1/22) The Loons
took the early morning ride from Plymouth to Holliston to take on the desperate
North Dakotans. "Do or die, gotta take three of four, or fuck the
season," or words to that effect from the ND manager. Indeeds, one team
did take three, and word after the series is that half the North Dakotan squad
is now on the trading block. The Loon pen proved to be the difference, holding
three leads and coughing up one. In game 2, the Loon pen barfed up a 2-0 lead,
allowing 3 runs in innings 8 and 9 to a briefly inspired ND squad. Blame that
one on Papelbon. But the Loons roared back in game 3 with a 9-0 drubbing. Game
4 was a nail biter, the Loons prevailing 2-1. If not for one miracle comeback,
Eric might have driven home with a sweep.
For the
Loons, Pollock went 8 for 15 with 2 doubles, a triple, a dinger, and 7 ribbies,
while Boegarts went 7 for 18 with 3 doubles and a couple of ribbies.
Syndergaard notched his 6th win in 7 decisions.
(1/15) Oceanus enjoyed the friendly confines of the
Rehoboth Parking Lot on Sunday and took 3 out of 4 from the visiting Smoking
Loons to close to within 3 games of first place.
In game 1, Keuchel pitched a complete game
with no earned runs en route to a 6-1 Asshole victory. Oceanus hammered
out 14 hits including 5 doubles. It was a close game until Wilhelmsen
allowed the floodgates to open in the 8th, where the Assholes put up 4 runs.
Richards pitched fairly well in defeat - 2 runs in 6.1 innings.
Oceanus got to Thor early in game 2, tiring
him out in the first inning. He stayed in to take one for the team.
The Assholes ended up winning 9-0, with Price pitching a gem (allowing 3 H with
1 BB and 12 K). Oceanus hit 5 HR in the game, including 2 from Crawford.
The Smoking Loons took game 3 by a slim 5-4
margin, in a game that was tight all the way. Eric masterfully managed
his 5 relievers, who combined to pitch 5 shutout innings. The Assholes
had 12 hits to the Loons 7 but could not put them together to enough meaningful
effect. Newcomer Tony Watson got the win. Nolan Arenado went 3-4
with 2 HR and a double.
Despite Bogaerts lead off HR to start game
4, and another Bogaerts HR later in the game, the Loons fell 5-2. This
time it was the Asshole bullpen that was masterful, with 4 no-hit shutout
innings of relief. Darren O'Day notched his 12th save. Mutant
starter Jesse "Wrath of" Hahn was ineffective allowing 3 runs in 4 innings
and taking the loss. Felix Hernandez got the win in spite of allowing the
2 HR to Bogaerts.
Oceanus hit .333 as a team for the series
with 8 HR. The team had a 1.50 ERA overall. Crawford and Teixeira
combined for 5HR and 13 RBI. Both Votto and Brantley (even without the
presence of Robin) hit over .460. Bogaerts and Arenado with 2 HR each led the
Smoking Loons. Watson was effective in his debut, appearing 3 times and
allowing only 1 run in 4.1 innings. Teixeira had 2 SB, meaning that I (virtually)
rolled a 2 twice. That was a head shaker. I didn't keep track but I
think I was better than 50 percent on BP HR chances (1-10 for L). I did
miss some but overall I'd say the luck was in my favor. Also Jed hit a 1 on a
BP dinger for righties....
.....
Meanwhile, down in Mansfield, with its
season hanging by a thread, North Dakota won 3 of 4 from high flying
Constantinople to win its first series of the season. North Dakota had all the luck, and its bats
finally came to life in the CN bandbox (1-19 for everything).
All four games were blowouts; the only managing either manager
had to do was to manage innings and at bats.
ND won game 1, 10-4 smashing a seasons worth of frustration by belting
out 6 home runs, including 2 by Lindor.
Game 2 was the closest game, ND winning 7-4 but was really never in
doubt, with ND hitting 3 more homers (including Goldschmidt's 3rd
1-11 roll of the series and Lindor’s 3rd 2-11 roll of the series). CN turned the tides in game 3, winning 13-1
(only 2 homers) against the failed starting pitching experiment, Tyson Ross. But North Dakota came back to win the finale
12-4 with 4 more homers (2 by Travis Shaw).
ND’s season is still hanging by a thread. Whether it unravels or gets sewn back into the
fabric of the playoffs will be determined next Sunday with a big four game
series against the 4th place Smoking Loons just before the trading
deadline.
Draft Day April 2.
(1/14)
Future Wax moved back to the top of the standings taking 3 of 4 at home from hapless North Dakota.
Game 1 pitted Greinke against Archer.
FW jumped to an early lead on back to back homers by Upton and
Stanton in the 1st.. But ND picked up a run on a
bases-loaded sac fly from Ortiz in the 3rd, and tied it on
an Encarnacion lead off bomb in the 6th. That set the
stage for Cruz to put ND ahead with a solo blast with one out in the
9th. Andrew Miller picked up the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
In Game 2 (Kershaw vs Ross), FW scored
2 in the 1st again, this time on an Ethier lead-off belt,
followed by McCutchen scoring on a double play. Upton then homered to
lead off the 2nd for a 3-0 FW lead. ND got one back in the 5th,
after a lead-off error by Machado led to a run on a Hernandez single.
But FW added 2 more in the bottom of the inning, with Ethier doubling
in Russell, and Morales doubling in Ethier. A two-out ND rally in the
8th, made it 5-2 on another Machado error, with
bases-loaded. But Stickland struck out Vogt to end the threat, and
closed out the game for the win.
Game 3 featured a dominant performance
by Scherzer, who allowed only 3 hits and struck out 15 on the way to
a 4-1 victory. His only mistake was a hanging slider that Cruz put
over the wall in the 2nd. ND's deGrom could not keep
pace, allowing 4 run over the 4th and 5th
innings, via 6 singles and 2 walks.
Cueto seemed poised to salvage the
series for ND in the final game, hurling a no-hitter through 5
innings, and nursing a 3-run lead on a Cruz homer (1st), a
Fowler triple and passed ball (4th), and a Hernandez
RBI-double capitalizing on a Schoop error (5th). But Cueto
faltered in the 6th, losing the no-hitter on a Rupp
single, followed by a McCutchen double, and then losing the lead on a
3-run shot by Upton. He talked the manager into keeping him in, got a
second out, but then game up what would be the game winning run when
Stanton went yard. Madson, McGee, and Carlson Smith combined for
perfect innings in relief, to hang on for the 4-3 win.
After
rolling for zero righty BP homerun chances in their last series at
home (R HR 1-19), North Dakota naturally rolled six righty BP homer
chances at cavernous Future Wax (HR 1-2).Draft Day, Sunday April 2.
(1/13) Oceanus took 3 out of 4 in New Orleans in a series that will forever be
known for the Cespedes controversy. Well, actually, we'll probably
forget about it in a few weeks. What happened is, we got well into game
2 when there was a flyball X to Cespedes in LF. I believe it dropped
in for a single, which should have been impossible for a 1. But the
wrong Cespedes was out there and of course had played all of game 1.
The Cespedes who was in was the better hitting but worse fielding
limited Cespedes. I offered to replay both games and Harold graciously
compromised at replaying just the second game, even though he had lost
the first game.
I managed to injure much of Harold's
team, which really helped in the first three games. Harold finally
started hitting in game 4. He had no BP HRs, not even a chance. The
only HRs he got were straight shots in game 4. Overall, statistically,
the teams were pretty even. But the luck / karma was there for the
Assholes when needed.
Mutant Mikie Mahtook hit 3
HR in 7 AB for 9 RBI (including a GS). Votto and Altuve hit over
.400. O'Day got 2 more saves, putting his season total at 11. Keuchel
pitched 7 innings of shutout ball. For New Orleans, Hosmer hit .500 and
Gordon .438 with 3 doubles, 5 RBI and 2 SB. Gray only allowed 1 run in
7+ innings and was a hard-luck loser. Lopez pitched 4.1 innings of
shutout ball with 5 k's against the heavily lefthanded Asshole lineup.
Mahtook has 7 hits this year - all HR. That must be some sort of
(obscure) record. He's leading my team in HR (and tied for the lead in
RBI) even though he's only had 22 AB. Already the best mutant I've ever
had.
Draft Day, Sunday April 2.
(1/6) The intrepid Minnesotan FW manager journeyed to Holliston
to start off the second half of the season. With snow falling steadily
outside the cavernous WaxDome from the middle of Game 1, Bay City
shocked the Waxers, taking 3 of 4 and holding Randy to 7 runs for
the series, to knock him out of first place by percentage points. Randy
scored single runs in the 1st and 2nd inning of Game 1, which was
enough to beat Gerrit Cole, 3-1 (and it might have been worse if not
for a bases-loaded clutch out by Springer against Britton in the 7th).
Mychal Givens made his season debut for BC, as the call-up for the
traded Watson walked the only batter he faced. Game 2 was a relative
blow-out for Bay City, with former Waxer Cole Hamels getting the 5-0
win. Jose Iglesias was the surprise star of the game, going 4 for 4
with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Game 3 saw Scherzer take a 1-hitter into the
9th yet he trailed 1-0. Bay City got what appeared to be an
insurmountable insurance run on a Chris Davis solo homer in the top of
the 9th, but FW came back to score 1 on an RBI single by former BCer
Ethier and the tying run on a GDP to Iglesias with the corners in in
the bottom of the 9th. BC broke it open in the 11th on a long single
(infield in, gb+) by pinch hitter Trayce Thompson. Despite having to
use Nick Castellanos as catcher in the bottom of the 11th due to a HBP
+ INJ to Posey, BC held on for the 4-2 victory, with Strop striking out
the side. Alas, Givens pitched well enough to use up a third of his
available innings for the season in relief. Game 4 was another
nail-biter: Randy had a 2-1 lead on the basis of 2 solo McCutchen
homers (to 1 solo Travis homer for BC) going into the 8th, but BC tied
it on a Piscotty HR. Travis doubled home Duffy in the 9th and Wade
Davis closed out the 3-2 BC win...Draft Day April 2.
(1/2) Tom
came home from vacation without all of his family’s luggage, but with
enough power to sweep floundering North Dakota to move to within a game
of first place.
It
looked like a good start as CN scored 5 in the first to tire Tyson Ross with
Arrieta was on the mound. But Ross settled down and silenced the CN
bats and Arrieta
gave up a ballpark homer to Vogt, followed by 2 walks in the 7th
to become tired himself. The cowardly CN manager pulled him, and next
thing you know it is 5-5. Bryce Harper answered in the top of the 8th
with a leadoff homerun (Rizzo missing a ballpark homer), but Vogt answered for ND with another
ballpark homer to tie it. Next thing you know, we are in extra innings and Rizzo
makes up for his earlier missed bp homer with a 10th inning double scoring Donaldson and CN holds on with Capps getting
as save.
Random
chit chat: CN claimed to have been fairly healthy with only 4 or 5
injuries in the first half and Arnie confidentally states “I have had a
lot of injuries,
so hopefully all done for the most part….”
Game
2: CN goes up 7-1 after 6 and looks to 'Cruz' to the end but then two
things happened – Nelson Cruz was injured for the rest of the series and
Vogt hit another
ballpark homer and ND plated 3 in the 9th to fall short 7-4.
Game
3 had Vogt hitting two more homers (ballpark and non ballpark, numbers 4 and 5 of the
series) but that was all the scoring for ND as CN took game 3 8-2 (all
on 2 run
homers – Sano, Harper, Sano and Forsythe).
Game
4 was the last chance for ND to pull out a game but CN once again jumped out to a big lead - 4-0 in
the first on 3 homers. The head hunting CN hurlers then took out
Goldschmidt (injured for 2 games) and Travis Shaw
(out for 6 games) to attempt to stop any chance of a comeback. ND still managed to pull
close as they scratched out a unearned run and 2 solo shots in different
innings to get the game to 4-3 after 5 with CN starter Liriano leaving the game.
Alex Gordon hit a home run to give CN a 5-3 lead, but that was immediately answered by an Ortiz ballpark homer in
the bottom of the 6th. Both sides bullpens bore down and the score remained 5-4 for a CN sweep.
Arnie’s ballpark is Lefty 1-13 homers and Righter 1-19 homers. Arnie
hit 6 ballpark homers in 7 chances all by lefty hitters. Despite
a ballpark hr 1-19 for righties, he had 0 righty ballpark chances
(after missing a bunch in Jed's park (HR 1) last series. The
Manatees hit 1 lefty ballpark homer out of 2, and Sano (right handed CN
DH) hit 2 of 2 ballpark homers for CN. (But they hit 10
straight/non-ballpark home runs vs. 3 for North Dakota)Draft Day, Sunday April 2
(12/28) From Jed: I can't speak for Eric but my
guess is that I was more satisfied with the split because he had the 2 games to
1 lead going into the final match. 3 of the 4 games were close with the
Loons getting one pounding in (with Adam Warren being involved, of course).
Eric reiterated his hatred of playing on the
computer. Again, don't want to put words in his mouth, but the gist of it
is that it doesn't feel like real Strat-O-Matic. I dunno. Looking
back, I feel there were plenty of Strat-O-like quirks (e.g. 2 Catcher X's in
the same inning, with one scoring a run...runner pegged out on a 1-15 steal chance,
runner pegged out at the plate on a 1-12 chance, errors by Gold Glove fielders
etc.).
There were no good leads in the entire
series and only one stolen base. No ballpark homers or anything even
close. No controversy, other than me playing too fast in game 3 (where I
got pounded).
Eric hit .271 (but with 0 HR) as a team for
the series, with a 1.75 ERA. Lemahieu and Bogaerts both hit over .400 and
Dickerson stayed hot at .375. Bastardo was stellar in relief, pitching
3.2 innings of shutout ball against the lefty-heavy Asshole lineup. For
Oceanus, Panik and Moustakas hit over .350 and Cervelli and Peralta combined to
hit .583. Hernandez, Keuchel and Price pitched a total of 20.1 innings
allowing only 2 earned runs.
From Eric: hatred....? perhaps jed's right. standard strat-o
quirks? also right. but... i hit zero home runs. i got zero good leads, and
tried for 8 or so. jed got one, and--as he said--got pegged. as i knew he
would. i could almost predict the negative rolls for both teams. neither squad
hit. maybe the ballpark? jed's a scary matchup for me. my guess is he'll take 3
at least next time around in his park.....
…….
Remember, at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, all teams
receive a day off! Happy New Year.
(12/27) The Loons took a
metro-west tour yesterday, first visiting Robin, then heading over to
Jeff's, making up two series in one fell swoop. There was much holiday
cheer in Loonville, as the Smoker's took 3 of 4 from both teams to set
up tonight's series against Jed in a battle for 3rd place.
Of
note for the Loons: Thor won both his starts, going 11.3 innings and
giving up just 1 run while striking out 9. The big hitter for the series
was Cory Dickerson, who had hardly played this year due to an 11-game
injury. With many limited plate appearance yet to be used, Eric threw
him in the lineup liberally, and it paid off, with a home run, 7 rbis, 2
doubles and 2 triples.
(12/20) Tom solidified second-place winning three or four from Harold last
night, but he is still three games behind Future Wax... Big flurry of
games here for Eric at the end of the year...the Strat-O-Matc ratings
are out for next year: http://www.strat-o-matic.com/community/announcements/2016-baseball-range-ratings-preview...
As there were no details about North Dakota at Oceanus, I thought I
would share a few karmic moments. Twice I had exactly the same
situation - a runner on first with no outs followed by an open double.
In each case I had a 1-14 chance to score. In the first instance I went
for it...and was pegged out at the plate. I didn't score in that
inning. The second time, chastened by the first result, I held up. I
didn't score in that inning either. I can't remember the complete
circumstances, which obviously would influence the decisions. But
somehow I feel like no matter how you play it, you should probably at
least get a run out of it.
Another karmic moment
occurred in game 4 where Felix Hernandez was pitching well, allowing
only 1 run on 4 hits through 5 innings. Sensing that I was pushing my
luck with King Felix, I brought in Adam Warren, who immediately gave up 4
runs in the 6th inning, losing the game. If we had a Gasoline award, I
think Warren would be a candidate.
Finally,
Michael Brantley is hitting .231 this year. But the former Bay City-ite
hit .400 in the series against Robin. Vs. Arnie, he went a respectable
5 for 18, due to the proximity of Robin, and got on base the only time
when Robin was actually in the room where Arnie was playing. So he's
hitting a Robin-influenced .333 versus .172 outside of Robin's
presence. Coincidence? I think not.
On
Arnie's side, he had numerous ballpark homers that died in the cavernous
confines of the Rehoboth Parking Lot left field (475 feet) whereas when
he has played at home this year he just plain hasn't been getting the
ballpark chances....
(12/18) Future Wax swept Bay City to open up a four game lead in first place. Greinke dominated in game 1,
yielding only
2-hits over 8 shut-out innings. Machado and Russell each
homered in the 5-0 win. FW won the second game 7-3, with
Gutierrez
and McCann going deep. BC's runs came from a 3-run blast by
Marte in
the bottom of the 9th, but it was too little, too
late.
Future Wax scored 9 runs in the 1st inning of game
3 off
Gallardo, only to have Scherzer give back 6 runs in the bottom
of the
2nd. But FW added 3 runs in the 3rd and
again
in the 6th, on the way to a 15-6 blowout. McCann,
Springer, and Machado homered for FW, with Herrera and Posey
doing so
for BC. The final game, in contrast, was a nail biter. Robin
got her
first lead of the series (2-0) on three singles and a sac fly
in the
2nd. But FW pulled even with a sac fly in the 5th
and a Machado solo shot in 6th. Travis was thrown
out at
the plate after a Posey double (1-17 safe chance) in the
bottom of
the 6th. Both teams missed ballpark homer chances
leading
up to the 9th. Robin had Wade Davis, best closer in
the
Sombilla, on the mound. But he walked mutant injury call up
McKenry,
and Stanton was brought in to pinch run. With one out, Morales
hit a
ball past Espinosa due to his involvement in the hold of
Stanton.
This set the table for defensive replacement Goins to hit a
decisive
3-run shot. BC got the potential tying run to the plate in the
bottom of the 9th, but Strickland induced a
double-play to
end the threat and complete the sweep.
Robin adds that: In his first at-bat against his former team, Darin Ruf
was hit by a pitch and injured for 10 games, proving that you
can take the player out of Bay City, but you can't take Bay City
out of the player. Also, Robin kept up her string of infield injuries,
with Harrison, Correa, and Castellanos all going down.
(12/15) "Maybe it's the manager" said Jeff after I lamented a
season and a half of North Dakota's failure to live up to expectations.
"Naw, just too much sitting around admiring my championship
rings", I replied. In game 1, Travis Shaw was the hero, belting a
2-run homer in the 9th to lead ND to a 5-4 win. In game 2, Scott
Kazmir, dumped by ND to WES a week before the draft for a 9th round
pick tortured his old teammates, tossing a 4-hitter to win 2-0.
ND smashed their way to a 9-5 win in game 3, but WES won the
finale 6-5 with Chapman closing the door on a late rally...All teams
except Eric are at the roster freeze...Managers, please remember to
return your 2nd half schedule surveys by Sunday...Send your stats to
Tom.
(12/11) Busy day for the SOMBILLA with all teams in action,
including a bash. Future Wax (6-2) was the day's bug winner,
opening up a 2 game lead over 2nd place Constantinople, which also had
a good day. Randy apparently benefitted from 3 or 4 cocked dice
situations where every re-rollresulted in a Wax home run...Jed reports that " Tom described his team as relentless and it was true. No lead is safe with that team in that park."...Robin
could tell that newly acquired Matt Duffy was a perfect fit. In
his first AB for Bay City he was HBP and injured...Send your stats to
Tom.
Red hot New Orleans, having won 7 of
their last 8, plummeted to earth after being swept in Future Wax's
cavernous ballpark. Zack Greinke set the tone with a 4-hit shut out
in the first game. Ethier and Russell each hit solo homers, while
McCutchen tripled in two in the 8th on the way to a 5-0
win. In the second game, Harold took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 8th
on a Bryant blast. But walks on each side of a Gregorius error loaded
the bases, which pinch-hitter Kyle Seager cleared with a triple off
Cecil (one of 7 relievers Harold used). Upton's sac fly put the final
score at 4-1. In the third game, Scherzer outdueled Sale, tossing a
complete game 6-hitter for a 2-1 win. Sale gave up only 4 hits and 3
walks in the 2-1 loss, on a Seager homer and unearned run from a Cain
miscue. In the final game, Brian McCann led FW to a 10-5 victory with
two home runs and 5 RBIs. Morales and Seager also homered, as did
Bautista on the other side. (This game featured minor controversy
after Randy called “cocked dice” three times and the rolled a
home run on each of the subsequent die rolls.)
(12/8) It was horrible. And demoralizing. I
shouldn't even be writing this. Harold won 2 extra inning games
including game 3, when North Dakota was winning 7-3 with 2 out in the
bottom of the 9th, and the mutant Parker hit a grand slam to tie it.
Harold tortured my bullpen by extending the game to 15 innings
before winning. ND also blew a 4-2 7th inning and 6-5 8th inning
lead in game 4. It was horrible.
(12/4) Harold climbed back to within 2 games of first place down at Plymouth today. The Loons managed 21
hits over 4 games and scored a total of 10 runs, while the Ellis's
sprayed the ball all over the yard and the bullpen was as per freakin'
usual razor sharp. And
at least 25 ground balls were hit to Dee Gordon at second
base...Meanwhile on the Internet - a classic satisfying / unsatisfying
split. Oceanus could not get a series win in spite of decimating
What Eric Said? with 4 injuries. WES had a 2-1 lead in games and
a 1-0 lead through 7 innings of game 4 but the bullpen failed in the
8th inning. Newcomers Shin-Soo Choo and Mike Moustakas
contributed nicely for the Assholes and Sluggin' Joe Panik smacked his
team-leading 4th HR. David Price pitched a complete game 2-hit
gem. For WES, Freddie Freeman had 6 hits including 3 doubles and
a HR. Kazmir pitched 7 shutout innings but didn't get a decision.
(11/20) The redesigned Rehoboth Parking Lot worked greatly to Oceanus' advantage
as the Assholes unexpectedly swept the Ellis. The Assholes, not known
as a slugging team, hit 9 HR in the series. The Ellis countered with 5
HR but missed ballpark chances and generally did not perform up to their
ability. Oceanus hit .315 as a team with Votto leading the way at .462
and Joe Panik with 2 HR (in the same game). All 4 starters (including
surprise substitute Stephen Strasburg) pitched well, with ERAs of 2.25
or below and Darren O'Day notched 2 saves. Eric Hosmer (.333) and Dee
Gordon (3 steals) had a good series for New Orleans and Sonny Gray, John
Lackey and David Robertson pitched well enough to deserve better
results. Here are the slightly edited computer-generated game
summaries:
Game 1 In a two run game the Oceanus Assholes got by the New Orleans Ellis by the score of 4 to 2. The
game started off with Oceanus taking the lead in the first plating an
isolated run. Darren O'Day was perfect in relief and got the save. Dallas
Keuchel allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up his first victory.
Sonny Gray took the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits
and 5 walks.
Game 2 Joe
Panik knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and David Price came through
with a solid 9 innings as Oceanus bested New Orleans 8 to 1 at the
Rehoboth Parking Lot. Panik had a good day at
the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 2nd inning and smashed a
two-run homer in the 4th inning. Oceanus totaled 11 hits on the
afternoon. The victory went to Price who went
the distance allowing 1 run. Matt Harvey was the losing pitcher. He
was touched for 4 homeruns in his 5 innings of work.
Game 3 26,184
fans watched an exciting game at the Rehoboth Parking Lot. Oceanus
topped New Orleans by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. .Oceanus
erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
plating 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Jason Heyward began the
rally when he drew a walk. After another out, Mark Teixeira came up and
he clubbed a two-run home run. New Orleans had a chance to come back
in the 9th but they came up short. Arodys
Vizcaino allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the victory.
Darren O'Day recorded the save. The losing pitcher was Brett Cecil in
relief. This game included the brilliant
substitution by Harold of Maikel Franco in place of Didi Gregorious to
hit a 2-run HR and tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the 8th and then
the brilliant substitution by Jed of Mark Teixeira in place of Jose
Altuve to hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th.
Game 4 Brandon Crawford had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Assholes beat the Ellis by a score of 4 to 1. Corey
Kluber gave Oceanus a solid outing. He surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings. Kluber whiffed an impressive total of 6 New
Orleans batters. Oceanus rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Luke
Gregerson preserved the game for Kluber, recording the save. John
Lackey was the loser. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3
innings.
Meanwhile, in Natick, Randy won the first two
and Eirc took the others. Of note were the 17 runs scored in game 1, a 10-7
Wax win, of which Randy predicts will be the most runs scored in a game
at the Wax Dome this year, and my back-to-back shutouts of Wax,
Hendricks and Thor (and bullpen) out-dueling Scherzer and Bumgarner 2-0
and 5-0 respectively.
(11/19) Without question, the highlight of this series occured in
game 1 after ND's Fransisco Lindor was injured in the 4th inning.
The regular backup SS, utilityman Kiki Hernandez was also
injured and ND had no backups on the bench (Encarnacion was the callup
and was the starting DH). Thus, David Ortiz was tapped to play SS
as a 5e88 for the remainder of the game. And no danger of
becoming the next Dontrelle Willis who was never the same again after
Harold used him as an emergency catcher in a similar situation.
Big Papi received a standing ovation for catching a routine
popup, then homered in the 5th inning. He did make an error in
the 8th that proved harmless. Papi's homer was one of three in
the game for ND (Carpenter and Goldschmidt had the others) as ND held
on to win 6-5, A. Miller with the save.
Bay
City came back to win game 2 behind the stellar pitching of the much
maligned Cole Hamels, helped by Wade Davis and T. Watson and 3
solo shots (C. Davis, Posey, and Correa) for the 3-1 win.
Game 3
was a nailbighter, as ND's 3-0 lead (homers by Vogt and Betts) became
3-2 with Correa's 2-run homer in the 7th. BC loaded the bases in
the 8th with 2 outs, but Osuna came in and struck out the hot-hitting
Correa to end the threat. Osuna pitched the 9th for the save, ND
wins 3-2.
For game 4, the ND manager invoked the
LeMahieu rule and kept Encarnacion on the roster instead of the now
injury free K. Hernandez, and Edwin made him look good, smacking a
2-run shot in the 1st off Lance McCullers, en route to a 4-0 lead.
ND held on to win 5-2, this time with K. Herrera earning the
save, the third ND pitcher to pick up a save in the series, believed to
be a SOMBILLA record.
(11/16) The key game was the finale. Tom won the game in
the 12th inning on an rbi single by Mike Trout. It was a "tired"
strikeout off Robin's AJ Ramos. Although Robin still had closer
Wade Davis in the bullpen, she's been gun shy about having her
best reliever be the last reliever pitching in an extra inning game
ever since Tom Henke was forced to pitch 10 innings in relief in a 20
inning game in 1987. She had no option to use a position player as a
pitcher since all her position players had already been used, helped by
an injury to Steve Piscotty. The 20 inning Henke game was
surpassed by Jed and Eric 5 years ago: "A long day
in Holliston for Eric was made excruciatingly longer when he and Jed
shattered the league record for longest game with a ridiculous
22-inning 9-8 game 4, won by Jed. This comes one week after Eric
tied the 24-year old league record with a 20-inning game against
Harold, which Eric also lost. Farnsworth pitched 9 innings for
Eric while J. Lopez pitched the final 10 innings for Jed".
(11/15) 1st game Arrieta won 9-1 behind 2 homers from Donaldson. 2nd game WES went up 3-1 after 4 but CN came back for 3 straight innings of 2 runs and CN held on for a 7-3 win. 3rd game WES aided by 3 ball park homers (in most parks)won an offensive showcase 12-5.
4th game started close as CN held onto a 2-1 lead through 7. The 8th was the end of the game as CN scored 6 and held on for the 8-1 win for the series…
(11/13) The highlight of this exciting series was Madison Bumgarner's no-hitter
in the final game. With no score going into the bottom of the 9th, Pinch
hitter Jonathan Schoop led off and drew a walk. Justin Upton then
blasted a two-run home run off Adam Warren, giving Future Wax it's
second walk off win of the series. It's the 7th league no hitter and 1st by a lefty.
(Two of the 7 no-hitters were combined no-hitters, with both
of the starters being lefties, but Bumgarner's is the first
complete no-no by a lefty).
In the previous game, Future
Wax pulled off a 4-3 win in 11 innings. The score was knotted at 3 after
nine innings. In the 11th, Gutierrez reached on an error. McCann
doubled, setting up Addison Russell's walk off. Erasmo Ramirez went 1/3
of an inning for the victory, while Felix Hernandez took a hard loss,
with 8 hits and 2 walks in 10 and 2/3 innings.
Jed's only win
came in game 2, 5-1. Right fielder Jason Heyward went deep and had 2
RBI. David Price gave up only 3 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Neither
team scored after the 4th inning. Adam Warren got the save. Kershaw took
the loss, surrendered 11 hits and no walks in 8 innings.
The
series began with a dominant performance by Zack Greinke, who threw a
3-hit complete game shutout at the Wax Works. Dallas Keuchel was the
victim of a defensive lapse and took the loss even though he did not
allow an earned run in the game.
(11/6) Smoking
Loons at Constantinople: The Loons, picked by their own manager to
finish last, took 3 of 4 from the Manatees in what the Loony's GM called
a decidedly disappointing start. The Manatees out-homered the Loons 8
to 3 for the series, with Rizzo and Harper banging two apiece, while
Adrian Gonzalez accounted for all 3 Loon dingers, to go along with 9
ribbies and the enmity of his manager. It may be early, but the Loon
manager is already on a short leash...
Trade update: BC acquires Cole Hamels from FW in exchange for Daren Ruf and a 9th round pick.
(11/6) The
SOMBILLA's 37th season began with the visiting team winning 3 of 4
in all four series. Jed was the only one to send Twits Notes
(sure easy for him, he makes his computer do it for him):
In the battle to finish
just outside of the playoffs, Oceanus managed to win 3 of 4 primarily due to a
distinct lack of good thing rolls on the part of Bay City. Three of the
games were close - two decided by a score of 2-1. For Bay City, who hit
only .194 as a team, Miguel Cabrera stood out with his .385 average. For
Oceanus, Mahtook and Beltre combined to go 6 for 9 with 3 HR an 7 RBI.
And of course, Brantley tormented his former team by hitting .400. Here
are the slightly-edited computer-generated game summaries.
Game
1
Right
fielder Stephen Piscotty had 2 base hits as the Bay City Rollers bested the
Oceanus Assholes 2 to 1 in Bay City. Tony Watson (1-0) came on to close the
door tight in relief. He did not allow a hit or a walk in his 1 and 1/3
innings. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th
inning. Watson got relief help from Wade Davis who gained credit for his
1st save. Dallas Keuchel (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 5
hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Game
2
Adrian
Beltre had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Assholes evened the series against the
Rollers by the score of 9 to 1. Beltre had a good day at the plate. He
banged out a single which brought home a run in the 1st inning, ripped a
one-base hit in the 3rd inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 7th inning and
lined a base-hit which scored a run in the 9th inning. Overall Oceanus
out-hit Bay City 12 to 7. David Price (1-0) allowed 1 run in 7 and 2/3
innings, and picked up the victory. Newly-arrived Cole Hamels (0-1) ended up
with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 9 innings.
Game
3
Oceanus
nipped Bay City team 2 to 1 in a hard fought contest. Felix Hernandez (1-0)
pitched a solid game. He went 7 innings surrendering 4 hits and 3
walks. Hernandez struckout 9 Bay City batters. Overall Oceanus
out-hit Bay City 8 to 5. Hernandez got
help from Darren O'Day who earned his 1st save. Zach Britton (0-1) was
hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and no walks in 2
innings.
Game
4
Second
baseman Joe Panik homered and had 2 RBI as Oceanus prevailed in the series
finale 7 to 4. Corey Kluber (1-0) was solid if not spectacular. He went 5
innings surrendering 4 hits and no walks and served up 2 'big flies'. Bay
City was out-hit by Oceanus, 11 hits to 7. Darren O'Day preserved the
game for Kluber, recording his his 2nd save. Yovani Gallardo (0-1) was the
loser. He was knocked around by Oceanus, allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in 5
and 1/3 innings.
