Twits Notes:  (3/12) World Series: Constantinople vs. Bay City at Hollston

Needless to say, the entire league is cheering for Robin, who has never won the championship on her own and shared the championship (with Tsuan) exactly 40 years ago.

CN beat BC 5 of 8 games in the regular season.

Constantinople 9 Bay City 4
Constantinople 5 Bay City 2
Bay City 3 Constantinople 0
Bay City 3 Constantinople 2
Constantinople 3 Bay City 1
Bay City 13 Constantinople 2
Constantinople 11 Bay City 9 (11 innings)

Constantinople wins World Series 4 games to 3

Here is Tom's writeup, with comments from Robin and Arnie:

It was an exhausting, exciting and exhilarating 7 game World Series.  All the ex’s.

The visiting Manatees came to Bay City and took the first two games by scoring early and often. The North Dakota manager was banned by Bay City wife from watching the Series after Tom went up 3-0 in game 2, then ejected from the premises to walk the dog after she lost game 2.

BC flew to Constantinople Florida and enjoyed the sun as their pitching in the new spacious Manatee Ballpark dominated and suddenly the series was knotted at 2-2.

CN managed to scratch out Game 5, 3-1 and headed to BC for the final of the series.

BC tried to break the Manatee spirits in game 6 by a 13-2 old style drumming as McCullers laughed at Ohtani as he could not find the answer for the BC hitters.

Finally, Game 7.  Cole was just not prepared as he gave up 8 runs in the top of the first and it looked like CN might have righted the ship and was going to cruise for the WS win.  (Amazing that the same pitcher who was started the 2-hit shutout could not get out of the first inning in his next start [and was not pulled early enough by his manager - Robin].) Robin on the other hand was relentless and BC locked down the Manatee hitters and scored 8 to tie over 4 innings (4-7) and both teams ended regulation knotted at 8-8.  Sadler had his arm fall off but was the last CN pitcher standing so he was it.  Joe Kelly had 2/3 of an inning left for BC and Snell had a 1/3 inning of tired relief to give.

The commentary went like this:

The teams tighten up and it is 8-8 after 9.  Haniger goes to 2nd as the ghost runner and JD hits a ballpark single and then Donaldson takes Joe Kelly for a sacrifice fly and then his arm falls off when he gives up a fielder’s choice to Bader.  Snell is now her last pitcher with a 1/3 of an inning but coming in tired since he was the game 4 starter.  He was allowed to pitch by the World Series Game 7 special rule, allowing all pitchers to pitch.  He gives up a double and then ends the inning against Joe.

10th inning for the home team, Yuli goes to second as the ghost runner and with the corners in Albies makes an out moving the runner.  Marte hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Vlad makes the 3rd out agains the tired Sadler who is the last man standing for CN.

11th inning, Joes goes to 2nd as the ghost runner and Segura hits a 3Bx.  Smith misses a Ballpark Homer chance and then Tatis hits a clean shot (2-4 the same roll is on both sides of the card and Haniger strikes out with CN now up 11-9.

The bottom of the 11th, Vlad goes to 2nd as the ghost runner and Perez hits BPHR chance to tie it but rolls a 20.  An out and strike out later and CN becomes the most hated team in Sombilla history.

BC never led in the game, but just kept coming back.  CN is now the most hated team in SOMBILLA history….

Tatis the knucklehead takes the MVP trophy home after winning Game 7 with a 2 run shot.  6 runs, 3 homers and 6 RBIs for the well balanced CN attack with 7 batters with an OPS over .900.

Sal Perez would have been the MVP for BC as he just kept hitting homers and Albies's glove kept CN down while his opposite number Segura (2 instead of 1) gave up at least 3 singles to the relentless BC offense.  (Robin: Obviously, Burnes (0-2) couldn't shake the bad karma attached from playing for the two franchises with the longest World Series droughts [Oceanus and BC]. And I didn't put Kopech on my roster [mainly because he didn't have enough innings] even though Jed's projection for him was great [he likely would have replaced Snell], but the bad karma could have attached to him, too, merely from Jed's recommendation. At least I finally got that huge trophy out of my house [and I plan on drafting the player you want with the pick ahead of you, Tom 😉].)

(3/4)  Constantinople vs North Dakota playoffs  at Holliston

Background:  Pre-season favorites North Dakota (picked 2nd) start off hot at 11-5 (including a sweep of Eric) and are a game behind Sam as of December 1.  They stumble a bit in December (5-7) but at 16-12 are still in third place. But after a 9-3 January (including a sweep of Bay City!), they’re tied with BC just a game behind Sam in a clear three-way race. A solid 12-8 finish snags North Dakota the President’s Trophy, now proudly displayed in the freezer.

Constantinople (chosen 3rd  in the pre-season poll) begins their campaign with a 6-6 November, followed by a disastrous 5-11 December and at the break are 11-17, 3 games behind Harold for 4th place.  After a 2-6 January, CN finds themselves at 13-23 looking up at the rest of the league and thinking about the draft. But then Tom and his family get Covid, and when he recovers, he has gained Strat-O superpowers.

He beats Harold 3 of 4, and then on 2/18, goes 7-1 in makeup games against BC and ND at Eric’s house to storm back into 4th place.  He beats Sam 3 of 4 to close out his season with a 15-5 February and enters the post-season as the hottest team in the league.

Tom post-Covid  23-10   .697 (includes post-season)

CN wins 5 of 8 in the regular season against ND.

So Butters (Tom’s new cat) decided 5 AM was a good time to bang on the bedroom door and meow.  Then Diana needed to get to her classroom in the 9 AM hour and back home again and then through slush, snow and grayness CN headed to Holliston.

Sirius XM ND fantasy radio was playing for the drive up 495.  One blowhard half whispered about a conspiracy of the 3 leading Sombilla teams choosing the 4th playoff team in the hope of getting a first round cup cake.  Another caller talked about how the Florida based Manatees could not adjust to the orange baseballs and snow  common in the ND Playoff environment.  The mechanical sweepers were ready.  They had arranged for BC to play 4 games versus Neverwinter earlier in the week since they only had to play four games this dismal Saturday.

{Arnie dismissed this saying that Tom is a lunatic and his team is the hottest in the Sombilla over the last couple of weeks.}

Coffee in hand, CN arrived a little early and set to play...

CN 4 ND 1
CN 5 ND 0
CN 5 ND 4
ND 4 CN 1
ND 7 CN 4
CN 5 ND 4

CN wins series 4 game to 2 game

Game 1:  The battle of the Lefties, the dominant starred Ray versus Urias a 20 game winner in MLB but a Sombilla punching bag.  Seager and Ohtani had first innings double to put CN up 1-0 over Ray as he struck out the side.
Urias was pulled after 3 having stranded 3 and the heart of the order coming up. Rasmussen struck out the side.  Sulser gave up Homer split to Harrison who is weak versus righties so he is left stranded at 1st.  Staumont put them down 1-2-3 in the 6th but he then walked 2 to start the 7th and Sadler relieved him and got a quick double play.  The pinch-hitting Walsh singled in the tying run.  Top of the 8th and CN needs to get something going after a pretty uneventful 2nd – 7th.  Ruff struck out and then the defense let ND down as Soler (4 in RF) gave up a 2 base error and then Smith hit a shot off of Polanco’s glove and it is 1st and 3rd one out and Harper is coming to bat.

deGrom comes out to stop the bleeding and Harper hit a longs single and then Seager follows with a 2 run double and when Ohtani works the walk Arnie pulls him with disgust.  Sewald came in and struck out 2 batters to bring the game to a 4-1 deficit with ND having 6 outs to come back.

A quick BPHR out (righty 1-3 Goldy) and then the next 3 batters get on versus Bummer to load the bases and chase him without getting an out.   (Controversy occurred when Arnie having had Tucker single decided to go for the lead and failed and then tried to pinch hit for Lowe and Tom as a stickler pointed out he could not pinch hit after going for the lead and Lowe hit a Double 1-4/out chance to set up 2nd and 3rd which Soler would have struck out on the pitch.  The walk to Soler who now pinch hit is what loaded the bases.)
Knebel comes in and a quick strikeout and failded BPS (1-11) for Crawford and 3 men are stranded in the 8th.

The 9th saw Knebel and Monaoh hold down ND for a 4-1 CN start of the series.  Sadler wins the game and Monoah records the save.

Game 2:  Alex Wood (another lefty) versus Gibson.  CN went up 2-0 early and in the 4th chased Wood as the first four men reached base on 2 walks, a single, and then a 2 RBI double for Smith (over matched but still has a 1 column).

The bullpen quiets CN, but the 5 runs is all they need as 6 pitchers combine in a shutout.

Final Score:  5-0 with Gibson going 5 innings for the Win.

Game 3:  CN goes home and Ohtani pitches against Lynn in what would prove to be the pivotal game.  Smith hit a 2nd inning homer to get CN up 1-0, but Polanco answers him with a lead off homer in the 3rd to tie the game.  Trout double and Tatis homers to get CN up 3-1 in the 4th.  The same 2 CN hitters K in the 6th to end that inning, but in the 8th Trout works a walk and Tatis hits his 2nd 2 run shot to give CN a 5-2 lead after a Harrison sac fly in the 8th.

Tucker greets Ramirez in the 9th for a single and Bummer comes in and again has problems giving up a single to Contreras and a walk to Soler loading the bases.  Then Bummer serves up a Px which he boots it and then a fielder’s choice to Crawford sees 2 runs in (5-4) and Soler and Alberto on 2nd and 3rd.  Sadler comes in and intentionally walks Polanco to load the bases. He gets a fielder’s choice getting Soler at home and then Harrison pops out to end the game 5-4.

Ohtani wins game 3 and Sadler records his first save of the series.

Pizza was 1 minute away and the teams decided to get 1 inning in and the aroma of frozen pizza woke up the slumbering ND bats….

Game 4:  Lefty rematch between Ray and Urias.  Urias gives up a long foul to Crawford on a x-9 (the x falling off the table) and the re-roll 2-4 clean grand slam and ND goes up 4-0 after 1 inning.

CN scratched out a run in the 2nd, but Ray was too much for them as Crawford added a solo shot (8th inning) and Urias took the 5-1 loss going 9 to save CN innings,

Ray wins the game going 8 strong innings and Hendricks closed out the game in the non-save situation.

Game 5:  Manoah comes in the start Game 5 versus Wood.

Things started fine as Donaldson hit a 2nd inning 2 run shot to give CN an early 2-0 lead, but Manoah was knocked out in the 3rd as ND score 4 on homers from Lowe and Polanco.  Stallngs greeted Gibson with a homer and suddenly it is 6-2.

An inning later Tucker hits a sac fly to give ND a 7-2 advantage.  And CN hits two solo shots by Ruf and Smith to bring it to 7-4.

Nelson comes in with one out in the 8th and gives up 3 base on balls to be tied and load the bases.  deGromm comes in to strike out 2 and then strike out 2 in the 9th to end the CN threat.

Wood wins Game 5 with deGrom getting his first save of the series.

Game 6:  Rodon versus Lynn.

Rodon gives up 4 in the second and Crawford (ND MVP) hits a double off of Tatis or Ruf (both 4s and I cannot read if it was a CFx or LFx) to lead off the inning.  Alberto doubled and Goldy hit a 3 run homer.

CN left Rodon in as his best starter by the numbers versus ND and CN is able to claw out 4 runs over 4 innings with solo shots from Harper and Ohtani and 2 runs when they loaded the bases with 1 out and Romano walked Votto and Trout hit a sacrifice fly.

So both teams hold serve through 9 and the game is knotted at 4-4.

Tatis is the ghost runner in CN’s top of the 10th and Votto hits a leadoff double driving in Tatis versus Hendricks and then Trout and Smith hit ball park home run chances (1-3) as outs and then Hendricks struck out Segura to end the CN part of the 10th with CN up 5-4.

Harrsion is the ghost runner and Bummer starts the 10th walking Betts.  Tucker is struck out and Lowe makes an out getting runners to 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs.  Stalling walks and it is bases loaded and Gallo “Mister True Outcomes” steps in.  He strikes out and CN goes home winnings the series 4-2.

Ramirez wins Game 6 and Bummer gets the save.

Gallo struck out 14 times in the series including one game with 5 Ks in 5 ABs.

(3/4)
Bay City vs. Neverwinter playoffs Internet

Background:  Both teams get off to excellent starts with 8-4 Novembers, including Sam’s sweep of Eric and Robin’s sweep of Randy. They continue their parallel tracks with 13-3 Decembers (and they both sweep Jed) and are tied at 21-7 at the halfway point, holding a 5-game lead over 3rd place ND.  But they both stumble a bit in January (Sam 3-5, Robin 4-8).  They are tied for 2nd place heading into the last day of the season, when Robin wins 3 of 4 from Sam to clinch 2nd place and home field advantage for their playoff series.

Bay City won 5 of 8 games from Neverwinter during the regular season.

Neverwinter 2 Bay City 1
Neverwinter 5 Bay City 3
Bay City 3 Neverwinter 1
Bay City 9 Neverwinter 0
Bay City 18 Neverwinter 1
Neverwinter 7 Bay City 5
Bay City 7 Neverwinter 4

Bay City wins series 4 games to 3

This series featured a road advantage for all but Game 7; annotated computer write-ups follow:

In Game 1, the Neverwinter Alpacas topped the Bay City Rollers by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1; Corbin Burnes got the hard-luck no-decision. Charlie Morton (1-0) pitched a fine game. He went 6 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 walks. Morton racked up 7 strikeouts. Bay City had a chance to come back in the 9th, but they came up short, going 0 for 9 with RISP and stranding 10. Giovanny Gallegos preserved the game for Morton, recording his 1st save. Jose Alvarez (0-1) was the loser in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

In a two-run game, the Neverwinter Alpacas got by the Bay City Rollers by the score of 5 to 3. Max Fried (1-0) had a steady outing. He was reached for 8 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Bay City out-hit Neverwinter 10 to 6, but again left 10 on base. Giovanny Gallegos gained credit for his 2nd save. Gerrit Cole (0-1) was the losing pitcher, whiffing 9 batters in 6 innings but allowing 2 homers. “I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly,” said Fried, “I was just giving us a chance to win.” [Editor’s note: Fried was not a little ugly—he was the cutest pitcher in the series.]

In a game for the baseball purist, Lance McCullers (1-0 and the second-cutest pitcher in the series) and Lucas Giolito (0-1) squared off in a tense pitching duel, in which the Bay City Rollers emerged victorious over Neverwinter, 3 to 1. BC had only 3 hits (one more than NW had) but made them count—with Vlad’s third homer in three games and Correa’s first. Ryan Tepera relieved and was untouched by Neverwinter as he recorded his first save.

The Neverwinter Alpacas pitching coach might be looking for a new job soon (Foreshadowing: This seems especially prophetic in light of Game 5). His team allowed 9 runs while Blake Snell (1-0), with relief help from Frankie Montas, shutout Neverwinter in a laugher. Jesse Winker had a big evening at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in the 2nd inning, doubled with all three baserunners touching home in the 5th, and doubled resulting in a run in the 9th inning. Bay City out-hit Neverwinter 16 to 5. Anthony Desclafani (0-1) suffered the loss. He gave up 16 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings (but saved the bullpen). NW had 3 stolen bases against the +9 (and exceedingly unattractive) Snell, but Sal Perez also threw out 3 runners attempting to steal.

Second baseman Ryan McMahon rocketed 2 grand slams (in consecutive innings) and Corbin Burnes delivered 5 solid innings as the Bay City Rollers crushed the Neverwinter Alpacas 18 to 1. Bay City out-hit Neverwinter, 17 to 3. The win went to Burnes (1-0), who allowed 1 run in 5 innings. Frankie Montas was credited with his 1st save (only because he pitched 4 innings—the game was never in doubt). Charlie Morton (1-1) took the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 and 1/3 innings of work (but only 14 of the 17 runs he allowed were earned, as Sam’s defense continued to let him down).

In a close game, it was the Neverwinter Alpacas 7, the Bay City Rollers 5 as the series returned to Bay City, which, despite have the Detroit park’s dimensions, appeared on screen as Fenway. (This diversion worked for the Alpacas, as Game 6 was the third road victory for NW.) Bay City never recovered after Neverwinter took the lead in the top of the 7th inning. Giovanny Gallegos was perfect in the ninth, giving him his 3rd save. Andrew Kittredge (1-0) went 1 inning, allowing no runs for the win. Gerrit Cole (0-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners (but, shockingly, no homers), giving up 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

In Game 7, Salvador Perez smacked 2 homeruns as the Bay City Rollers topped the Neverwinter Alpacas by a score of 7 to 4. Perez belted a three-run homer in the 3rd and a grand slam in the 4th, accounting for all the BC RBIs. Lance McCullers (2-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings, after which his arm fell off [No truth to the rumor that it was severed by an errant champagne bottle thrown from the dugout by an early-celebrating teammate.] McCullers got relief help from Ryan Tepera, who gained credit for his 2nd save. Lucas Giolito (0-2) took the loss. He allowed Bay City 7 runs in 4 innings of work.

Surprise star of the series for Bay City was Ryan McMahon, who batted .444, had 2 doubles, 3 homers (2 grand slams), 4 walks, and 10 RBIs (and no errors at 2B/3B). Honorable mention to reigning MVP Sal Perez (2 HR, 9 RBIs) and Vlad Guerrero (4 HR, but only 6 RBIs). Sam’s bullpen (except for Iglesias) did not allow an earned run, but his pitching staff still racked up a 6.10 ERA (compared to BC’s tidy 2.71). BC outhomered the Alpacas 14-5 and out hit them .279 to .183

(2/25)
Bay City took 3 of 4 from the Alpacas (hitting triples in 3 of 4 games) to secure 2nd place and home field advantage (winning the season series 5-3) against the soon-to-be-familiar opponent Neverwinter.

In Game 1, Salvador Perez cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Icewind Dale Corral where the Bay City Rollers beat the Neverwinter Alpacas 9 to 3.

Perez enjoyed a great evening at the plate.  He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st inning, laced a base-hit plating a run in the 4th inning, tripled in the 6th inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 8th inning (spoiling his chance for the cycle by failing to stop at second).  Bay City had 15
hits overall, while Neverwinter had 6.  India made a couple of costly errors, as he was frequently tested at 2B.

The victory was credited to Lance McCullers(6-3) who went 6 innings, allowing no runs. John Means(1-2) was hit with the loss.  He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Perez said 'next time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

They did indeed pitch Perez tougher in Game 2, as he went 0 for 5. I think this was also the game in which I both had a runner on third cut down at the plate AND left the bases loaded without scoring in the same inning. Bo Bichette smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Neverwinter Alpacas bested the Bay City Rollers 4 to 3 at Icewind Dale Corral.

Bichette helped send the fans home happy.  He lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 3rd inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 5th inning.  Bay City had 10 hits in the game while Neverwinter had 3,
but Neverwinter had the more timely hits.

The win was credited to Max Fried(1-1) who went 5 innings allowing 3 runs. Giovanny Gallegos got the save, his 3rd.  Blake Snell(0-2) was charged with the loss.

In Game 3, Sam made it close with a late inning homer by Realmuto off Tepera, but  it was the Bay City Rollers 8, the Neverwinter Alpacas 6 at
Icewind Dale Corral. Neverwinter was unable to recover after Bay City went ahead in the 4th inning as they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Nicholas Castellanos, who silenced Icewind Dale Corral as he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.  Neverwinter was out-hit by Bay City, 10 hits to 7.

The win was credited to Frankie Montas(5-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs. Lucas Giolito(1-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 5 runs in 5 innings and saw his ERA increase from 5.40 to 6.48 in the loss. Of note in this game was that two 2-20 guys (Perez and Winker) both stole successfully.

Game 4 was an exciting back and forth: In a great finish the Bay City Rollers came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Neverwinter Alpacas by a score of 5 to 4 at Icewind Dale Corral (after the Alpacas scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th to lead 4-2, which was after Bay City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 8th).

Bay City scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 3  base hits.  Ryan McMahon led off and started the attack as he doubled.  Ozzie Albies was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out.  One out later, Yuli Gurriel then laced a single.  Salvador Perez came up and he rifled a three-run blast.  Bay City had 12 hits for the game and Neverwinter had 9.

Art Warren(5-0) allowed 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory (after blowing the save)--he celebrated by having his arm fall off after the final out. Giovanny Gallegos(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Perez said. 'If you just keep trying good things can happen!'

The rare hat trick by Sal Perez in this series: a triple, a stolen base, and a walk! In an attempt to earn back-to-back SOMBILLA MVPs, Sal went 8 for 19 with 3 HR and 8 RBIs at the Corral.

...

One interesting note in the OC-DN seires: in every game, OC  was up 4-2 at one point. Also, we missed 6 1-15 BP HR chances.  Statistically, Eric totally outperformed me as he scored 9 runs in each of his two wins.

...

With nothing to play for, Randy finished his series split with North Dakota in an astonishing 2 hours, 40 minutes!

(2/23) By virtue of winning 10 of his final 12 games, including 3 of 4 over Sam last night, Tom has roared into the playoffs, clinching 4th place. The top three playoff positions are still in flux. Meanwhile, Eric's enigmatic season continued:

The Dead Nettles visited Future Wax in Natick last night and swept a beleaguered Randy. "My team just can't string together hits," he said, or words to the effect. And he was right. The team combined for 26 or so hits over the four games, mostly singles. Scores:

5-4
5-3 (10 innings)
3-1
8-2

The signature game was the extra inning affair. FW took a 3-0 lead into the 7th behind a masterful Woodruff, but he grew tired in the 7th and surrendered a run. Still leading 3-1 into the 9th, FW's pen coughed up the lead, allowing DN to tie the game and send it into extra frames, whereupon FW's pen (specifically, Castillo) gave up two runs. Floro got the save for DN, inducing a double play with no outs, then whiffing Stanton to end the game.

...
Tom also sent along Twits Notes from his series as he did not realize Eric and Randy were playing (let alone sweeping):

Game 1:  NV's Fried gave up 2 runs in the 2
nd but Schwarber got one back in the top of 3 with a long single to make it 2-1.  Yaz tied it in the 6th with a solo shot and Ohtani then put CN up 4-2 in the 8th on a 2 run homer.  So Sadler comes on for CN gives up a homer, a 3Bx error and then walk and a double to blow the lead and now NV is up 5-4.  Trout comes up with 2 outs in the top of the 9th with men on 1st and 2nd and hits into a clutch out and Neverwinter takes the first game.

Game 2:  NV's DeScalfini gave up 2 runs in the 1st, then 2 more and then more 1 and then 6 and its 11-0 and he's tired.  That was they wrote as Sam was managing innings and the game ended up 16-5 tying the series at 1-1.

Game 3:  Neverwinter went up 2-0 after 3, but Tatis tied it with a 2 run shot in the 4th.  Harper hit a double to give CN the 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish as they shut down Neverwinter the rest of the way to win 4-2 and go up 2 games to 1.

Game 4:  This was the pivotal game and CN got the luck versus the defense, getting errors and singles on x chances to 2s that led to an early unearned run but Neverwinter went up 2-1 after 5 against Urias.  The seventh saw a 3Bx error, bunt, out, walk and then a 3 run homer by Tatis (which made all the runs unearned but I question the bunt as part of the 3 out calculation in that obviously without the error the bunt out does not happen…).  But it is 4 (all unearned) to 2 with CN looking to close it out.  Sadler again comes out for the 8th and gives up a walk and a homer to Yaz to knot the game at 4.  In the 10th, Neverwinter gets an out, RFx for an out and then a K setting up the bottom of the 10th.  With the speedy Tatis at 2nd base, Rizzo tries to lay down a bunt and misses it getting the count to 3-2.  Then Double/S** chance and the long single ends the game with CN winning a walk off 5-4 victory to bookend the series with opposite team 5-4 wins.

Draft Day, Saturday March 1
(2/19)

Constantinople stormed into 4th place and a potential playoff berth in two weeks by winning 7 of 8 down in Plymouth. Meanwhile, poor Eric not only went 0-8, but his two bash record finished at 1-15 on the year (17-15 the rest of the time). Slightly edited Twits Notes from Tom:

So in a desperate attempt to claim some relevance CN went down to Plymouth to salvage their playoff chances.  All the bad luck of the season began to be balanced by a day of good rolls and vegan pizza.

Game 1:  CN faced North Dakota in the spacious hurricane ravaged CN park and the bats were alive against Bieber scoring 6 runs to tire him in the first two innings.  After ND’s Polanco hit a 2nd inning homer, management decided to go for it by bringing in reliever Chad Green.  CN hit 6 runs over the 3rd and 4th innings and Green was tired.  The rest of the game flowed forward with both teams scoring 2 runs each to end the game 14-3 for CN.

Game 2:  Lynn versus Rodon and both sides clean up hitters hit 3 run homers (Tucker and Devers).  Harper hit a 2-run homer in the 5th to go up 5-3 and CN came back loading the bases in the 7th with no outs but CN got out of the inning with only 1 run scored and it was 5-4.  CN scratched out a run to get to 6-4 and Noe Ramirez came in to close out the game 6-4.

Game 3:  CN went up 2-0 after 5 and CN tried to hold on. 9th inning with Knebel was on the mound to close it out.  He was treated with a hit and a walk followed by an out and MVP candidate Kyle Tucker came to the plate.  He hit a LFx and the defensive LF is in there (a “3”) and the dice rolled a … 3 and 18.  Double and 3 base error scoring 3 runs and giving ND a 3-2 lead to hold on to.  (It would not have been an error on the 4 Ruf…)  Hendricks came in and held CN for a 3-2 win.

Game 4:  The closing battle of the lefties – Urias versus Wood.  Wood gave up 3 in the 3rd including a homer by Segura but ND came back in the 4th with 2 of their own.  Noe Ramirez, the erstwhile closer with many innings came in the 7th and got no one out and allowed 2 runs and ND had a 4-3 lead to hold on to.  Bottom of the 9th, Kimbrel is on but Trout pinch hit for a walk and two strikeouts later Harper doubles him home to tie the game.  Gurriel is retired and we are on to extra innings.  The confused CN manager forgot that there was a ghost runner as the over matched ND Phillips squared to bunt (and asks you can bunt for a base hit?) and now Goldschmidt is on third with one out.  Contreras works a walk but is picked off of first and it is 2 outs with a man on third. The pinch hitting Betts makes and out and CN gets their extra inning chance.  K and BB later, Chafin comes in to face Tatis.  Gets him and now Devers has to face the lefty.  He singles and Gurriel comes home with the game winner 5-4 giving CN a 3-1 series victory.

Meanwhile BC handles Eric sweeping him and everyone grabs a slice of pizza and the Pollingers switch chairs.

BC hosts CN and it was not a good series for her even when she after game 5, demands the chair that she was using earlier against Eric.  Arnie (“I don’t believe in chair luck”) happily obliges.

Game 5:  BC bats are quiet as they are constantly walked (okay 5 times) but with only 2 singles and nary a ball out of the infield they fail to score any runs as CN wins the game 3-0.  Devers doubled in a 4th inning run but Smith is thrown out at home (1-12 chance to score) and later a 1-15 chance Smith is cut down at home again in the 8th.  2 CN runners are caught stealing as BC could enjoy throwing folks out but could not overcome back to back solo shots (Tatis and Harper) late.

Game 6:  This is a nail biter as both teams score single runs in 5 different innings to go into the 9th tied at 3.  CN loads the bases with 1 out and Segura strikes out to bring up Smith.  He hits a ballpark shot (1-7) and it is a grand slam that Noe takes and holds BC for the 7-3 win.

Game 7:  Burnes holds CN to 1 run but Alvarez comes in the 7th to give up 2 runs and CN has a 3-0 lead to hold onto.  Sulser, Graveman and Staumont hold BC to 1 run over their last 3 innings to give CN the 3-1 victory.

Game 8:   Urias gives up a run and BC finally has a lead.  But CN just had all the luck and scored 7 runs over the 5th and 6th to chase Gerrit Cole as 4 homers are hit (2 by Devers) over these innings and CN put on the cruise control for a sweep and 7-1 final game victory.

BC’s bats were just quiet after all the running around the bases against Eric and they could only muster 5 runs and never more than 1 run in any inning.  CN had the homers and the timely pitching for the rare CN sweep.

Draft Day, Saturday April 1

(2/15) Wednesday night's action left 4 teams within two games of 4th place, including Eric and Harold in a virtual tie as New Orleans' regular season came to a close.  Here are the details:

Game 1:  Alpacas win 6 to 1 over the Assholes

Desclafani pitched seven strong innings, allowing only a solo shot by Varsho in the sixth to secure the victory.  Homers by Mullins and Schwarber powered the Alpaca victory. Freddie Freeman had 2 base hits at Icewind Dale Corral. Walker Buehler was the losing pitcher. Despite the loss, he struck out 9 Neverwinter batters in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Neverwinter wins 10 to 8 over Oceanus
In a high scoring affair at the Corral, the scrappy Alpaca’s put up a four spot in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.  Neither starter had their “A” game and did not factor into the decision.
Musgrove surrendered five runs in 5 1/3 while Giolito gave up six runs in 6 innings.  Five homers were hit in the game.  Ramirez and Abreu went yard for the visitors while Freeman, Bichette and India hit
long balls for the home team.  Bichette’s was a pinch hit 2 run no doubter in the bottom of the eighth to put the Alpacas on top for good.  Neverwinter closer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save. Second baseman Jonathan India hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Neverwinter
India enjoyed a fine evening at the plate.  He hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning, laced a base-hit which plated a run in the 7th inning and
doubled bringing in a run in the 8th inning.  Oceanus was out-hit by Neverwinter, 14 hits to 11.  Tony Watson went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Watson got
help from Giovanny Gallegos who was credited with the save.  Jarlin Garcia ended up with the loss in relief.

Game 3: Assholes top the Alpacas 5 to 3

Oceanus scored two in the top of the 1st of Alpaca ace Morton, while they tied up the game in the bottom of the 2nd of Asshole starter Webb.  Buxton had a huge game going 3 for 3 with three RBI’s, including
a 4th inning two-run bomb off of Morton.  Oceanus closer Pressly pitched a perfect 9th for the save.  Over aggressive baserunning in the 8th inning cost the Alpacas as both Mullins and Acuna were thrown out at
second missing on 1-14 roles trying to steal. Logan Webb(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Oceanus. He went 8 innings
surrendering 6 hits and 4 walks.  The Neverwinter batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. Ryan Pressly recorded the save, his 1st.  Charlie Morton(0-2) took the loss.
Despite the loss, he struck out 10 Oceanus batters in 7 innings.

Game 4: Neverwinter topples Oceanus 10 to 3

The Alpacas scored one in the 1st and then drove Asshole starter Nola from the game with a five spot in the bottom of the third, capped by a three-run bomb from Moncada.  He finished the game 2 for 3 with four RBI’s.
Mullins and Acuna also hit homers in a rare offensive outburst from the home team.  John Means pitches seven strong innings for his 3rd win of the season.  Freddie Freeman also had a great game going three for four.
Jesus Sanchez was the lone bright spot for the visiting Assholes, going 4 for 5, just a homerun shy of the cycle.  He scored two of the three Oceanus runs.
Neverwinter promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating one baserunner.  Neverwinter banged out 13 hits on the afternoon. The winning pitcher was John Means  who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Aaron
Nola was given the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 6 hits and 2 walksin 2 and 2/3 innings.
... Meanwhile,

CN hitters have been complaining about how their quaint little band box has been destroyed by Climate Change and Hurricane force outfield winds stopping the easy homers.  They had also grown fat.

CN was asked to host on the computer despite being the away team and had not set up New Orleans ballpark but didn't realize it.  So after a quick one out ballpark homer that was an out … but wait, Harold's park is 1-19 everywhere …   They restarted.

And then CN accidentally had a 27 man roster (before the 45th game eligibility) that went unnoticed till game 2 at which point CN removed Trout for the series as their penalty.

Game 1 – Déjà vu – CN offered to restart if he scored a slew of runs in the top of the 1st.  Tatis hit a Ball Park homer to put CN up 2-0.  But New Orleans came back in the bottom to go up 4-2.  Then it was 5-3 NO after 2.  And then CN put up a 4 spot on the way to being up 8-5 going into the bottom of 7.  NO put a 5 spot up to go up 10-8 behind a 3 run Grandal bomb.  CN got one back in the 8th to bring us to the top of the 9th -- 10-9 New Orleans.  Devers is hit by the pitch and injured.  But wait he gets up out of the dust and goes down to first and Strato crashed.  Save Game A.  Went to restart and cannot find the saved game.  Found it.  Started again and Devers is IBB to first and Votto homered to give CN a lead and then Escobar gets some insurance on a 2 run ball park homer.  Knebel came out in the 9th to hold on for the 13-10 victory and a save.

Game 2  Ohtani finished his pitching season giving up 2 runs, but the bats are alive for CN and they get 11 over the first 5 to give Ohtani a 5 inning 11-2 victory.

Game 3 Gibson versus Alcantara and it is 0-0 going into the bottom of the 5th.  Semien hits a 3 run homer for NO to chase Gibson.  Seager and Ohtani go back to back in the 7th to bring the game to 3-2 and Posey answers in the bottom half with a 2 run ball park homer to get the lead back to 3 (5-2).  Top the 8th, Donaldson comes in with 2 men on and hits a ball park shot to tie it (unearned runs as Bryant had bobbled Harpers liner right before Donaldson got his chance).  Bottom of the 9th, Sadler (who has barely been used this year) comes in and gives up 2 hits to allow New Orleans to win 6-5 and hope for a split.

Game 4 Urias comes out to cough up 3 on the Judge ball park shot in the 1st and it is 3-1 and looking good for New Orleans.  But it was the Manatees night as Harper had a 3 run shot and then Ruf had 2 run shot to get them up 6-3 after 5.  The next thing you know it is 8-3. But NO is trying to come back against Gravman and Bummer.  Wong hits a 2 run bases loaded clutch hit but Riley strikes out in front of a depleted bench and Knebel comes in to the game in the 9th to stop the bleeding and the series with a 8-5 save to give the CN Manatees a winning series for once in this sick and tired season.

Draft Day, Saturday April 1

(2/14) The Assholes traveled to Constantinople in hopes of firmly establishing themselves in last place.  Unfortunately, the series ended in a split.  Oceanus seemed to have most of the luck, at least in the first 3 games (the 4th was a laugher for the Manatees).  The Assholes got at least 1 BP homer and maybe 2.  A lot of 1 split picks, at any rate.  Tom did bunt better than I did.  The computer game did not behave particularly well but we muddled through without needing to reboot at least. No computer-generated game summaries so I'll have to reconstruct from the box scores and my failing memory:

Game 1

Max Kepler doubled in Brandon Nimmo to give the Assholes a 1-0 lead after the 1st inning.  Oceanus tacked on another run in the 4th when Nate Lowe doubled in Kepler (who had walked and stolen a base).  Constantinople tied the game in the bottom of the 5th after Walker Buehler lived up to his first name and walked 3 batters (Corey Seager, Rafael Devers and former Asshole Joey Votto). Mix in a Fernando Tatis sac fly and a Trevor Story error and the game was tied.  Each team scored singleton runs in the 7th.  Jazz Chisholm hit a homer for Oceanus and Bryce Harper and Votto doubled for Constantinople.  Nothing else happened in regulation so it was on to extra innings.  Tom hadn't turned on the 2021 rules so we had to manually keep track of the runner on 2nd (which wasn't that difficult).  Oceanus had Nimmo on 2nd.  Kepler got a HBP.  Jose Abreu singled to drive in Nimmo.  Then Byron Buxton hit a 3-run bomb.  Jarlin Garcia pitched a second scoreless inning of relief to secure the 7-3 victory for Oceanus.  Both starters pitched pretty well.  Alek Manoah allowed 2 runs in 6 IP and had 7 Ks.  Buehler allowed 2 ER in 8 IP with 6 Ks (and 6 BB).

Game 2

Oceanus once again took the lead in the top of the 3rd as Alex Verdugo doubled and then Brandon Nimmo singled him home.  But that was it for the Assholes.  The Manatees struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th as Rafael Devers doubled in a run, Mike Trout singled in a run and Lourdes Gurriel hit a sac fly.  Shohei Ohtani allowed 1 earned run in 5 innings while striking out 7.  Josh Staumont got the win in relief and Dennis Rasmussen the save.  The two relievers pitched 4 shutout innings.  Meanwhile. former Manatee Jose Urquidy took the loss.  He only allowed 1 earned run in 5.1 innings (a Jazz Chisholm error proved costly).

Game 3

This one was similar to game 1.  Oceanus took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.  Constantinople starter Kyle Gibson allowed a single to Max Kepler and then walked Trevor Story, Alex Verdugo, Jose Ramirez and Jose Altuve.  Then the Manatees struck back in the 5th with a Fernando Tatis 2-run homer.  The Assholes scored 2 in the 7th on a Jose Ramirez 2-run homer.  Constantinople cut the lead by 1 in the bottom of the 8th on a Bryce Harper solo shot.  Alex Verdugo provided insurance runs for Oceanus with a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th and Ryan "Elvis" Pressley pitched a perfect bottom of the 9th to pick up his 12 save of the season.  Final score Oceanus 6 Constantinople 3.  Aaron Nola allowed only 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 10 for the victory.  Gibson only allowed 4 hits in 8 IP but the 6 walks were killer.

Game 4

This one was all Constantinople from the get go.  Former Asshole Joey Votto, who'd been relatively quiet thus far during the series, slugged a 3-run dinger in the 1st.  Doubles by Shohei Ohtani, Rafael Devers and Jean Segura led to 2 runs in the 2nd.  Oceanus did push a run across in the 3rd when a Devers error allowed Mark Canha to score.  And the game stayed marginally within reach (only 5-1) until the Manatees added a run in the 6th and then another 2 in the 8th.  Joey Votto hit another homer as did Connor Joe.  Constantinople outhit Oceanus 10 to 4 and the much-maligned Julio Urias pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs.  Pablo Lopez, making his only start of the SOMBILLA season for Oceanus in the supposedly pitcher-friendly park, allowed 6 runs in 7 IP with 8 K (and 2 HRs).  He was simply overwhelmed by SOMBILLA-level talent.

Draft Day, Saturday, April 1

(2/12) An unsatisfying split for Robin, a satisfying split for Randy.  I believe it was Jeff who first described splits this way, depending on the game 4 outcome.  Robin says there was nothing "Twits Notes worthy"...Harold wants to propose starting the season earlier next year to give managers more time to get the games in before March.  He points to this season's issues with his travel to Ireland this week and Tom's Covid.  Robin points out that we actually started a week later than usual because MLB finished later than usual due to the strike.  Arnie points out that in the entire history of the SOMBILLA, we've always been able to get the regular season finished before March (not counting one year when two non-playoff teams played their end of season series in March after the playoffs [Eric and Jeff I think]).  Robin and I are both against it.

Remember day off after game 40, extra man after game 44...Draft Day Saturday April 1.

(2/10) North Dakota took over first place for the first time this season, winning 3 of 4 at New Orleans.  The team picked a great park (1-19 for everything) to set a franchise record for most ballpark singles in a game (Harold said 6 for game 1, but I think there were more) and most bp singles in a series (at least 6 more). North Dakota had so many bp chances they even missed one.

The Nuclear Warheads jumped in front in all four games.  In game 1, Soler's first inning 2-run HR is followed by Tucker's grand salami in the third inning to make it 6-0 off The Ellis' best starter, Zack Wheeler. New Orleans chips away against the ND bullpen after deGrom is lifted and its 6-4 after 8 innings. But a plethora of bp singles and great rolls leads to six 9th inning ND runs.  Final score 12-4.

Brandon Crawford hits the first pitch of game 2 out of the park, but New Orleans scores 5 runs on 7 hits in the 2nd and 3rd to take the 5-1 lead. (Two of the runs were scored with the tiny dice). After homers by Soler and Gallo (after being taunted by Harold for being useless to the Yankees) makes it 5-3 in the 7th.  Myles Straw's rbi single in the 7th and Judge's 2-run blast (after ND laughed at Judge's performance so far in the series) makes it 8-3.  Two solo shots for ND are too little too late, final score New Orleans 8 North Dakota 5.

There was a rainout before game 3, second one in the the SOMBILLA this year.  In the delayed game 3, North Dakota tires out Alcantara in the top of the first with 5 runs on 3 hits and 5 walks.  Posey's 3-run homer off Alex Wood makes it a 5-3 game but Jared Walsh responds with his own 2-run homer in the bandbox and its 7-3 in the 4th.  Rbi hits by JP Crawford and Posey make it a 7-5 game after 6 innings.  But Kimbrel and L. Hendricks close the door pitching 2-hit ball the rest of the way. Final score, ND wins 7-5

In game 4, ND once again jumps in front 5-0, rbis from Slater, B. Crawford, G. Cooper and a 2-run HR by Tucker. No lead is safe in this park and New Orleans scores 3 runs on 7 hits in the 4th to make it 5-3.  Joey ("True outcome") Gallo homers in the 5th off Head to make it 6-3. J. Crawford's rbi double off Hendricks in the 6th makes it 6-4, ND. But Chafin, Sewald and Jimmy Nelson (whose arm falls off after earning the save) close the door, giving up just one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings.

Star of the series was Kyle Tucker. .389 (7 for 18), 6 runs, 4 homers, 10 rbis.
...

Don't forget about the 27th man callup after game 44...Draft Day, Saturday, April 1.

(2/7)

New Orleans clawed its way back to .500 and opened up a 2-game lead over the 5th place Dead Nettles earlier tonight, knocking Sam out of first by percentage points.

G1:

Center fielder Cedric Mullins touched them all and had 2 RBI at Icewind Dale Corral as the Neverwinter Alpacas beat the New Orleans Ellis 5 to 3.

New Orleans was unable to climb back into it after Neverwinter went ahead for good in the 5th inning when they scored 2 runs on 1 hit.  The highlight belonged to Mullins who excited the crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.  Neverwinter had a total of 9 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Lucas Giolito(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 5 and 2/3

innings. Giolito was helped out by Giovanny Gallegos who recorded his 1st

save.  Zack Wheeler(0-1) was the loser.  He struck out 9 batters in 6 and 2/3 innings despite losing the game.

G2:

Blake Treinen(1-0) was the winner as New Orleans Ellis shutout the Neverwinter Alpacas by a 4 to 0 score at Icewind Dale Corral.

Treinen won the game with a masterful relief performance.  No one was able to reach base in his 1 and 1/3 innings dropping his ERA from 9.00 to 3.86.  Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point.

Charlie Morton(0-1) was tagged with the loss.  He surrendered 4 runs and 6

hits in 8 innings.

G3:

First baseman Matt Olson had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Sandy Alcantara reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the New Orleans Ellis clobbered the outmatched Neverwinter Alpacas, 11 to 1.

Olson had a big evening at the plate.  He hit a bases-empty home run in the

2nd inning, doubled scoring two baserunners in the 2nd inning, slapped a

single in the 4th inning and delivered a base-hit in the 6th inning.  New

Orleans managed 16 hits in their victory.

The victory was credited to Alcantara(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 1 run. John Means(0-1) was the loser.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 14 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.

G4:

First baseman Matt Olson cracked 3 homeruns and had 8 RBI at Icewind Dale

Corral where the New Orleans Ellis beat the Neverwinter Alpacas 9 to

1.

Olson was really in 'the zone'.  He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 1st inning, launched a three-run homer in the 4th inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 6th inning, singled in the 8th inning and doubled plating two runs in the 9th inning.  New Orleans out-hit Neverwinter for the game, 17 hits to 7.

The victory was credited to Chris Sale(1-0). Max Fried(0-1) was given the loss.  He served up 4 gopher balls in 6 innings.

Matt Olson was the star of the series, going 10 for 17 (.588) with 4 HR and 11 RBI.

(2/5) Poor Tom came down with a bad case of Covid, which he got from his wife Diana, who is a teacher. Hoping for a speedy recovery!  Saturday's bash has been rescheduled for 2/18.

The Alpacas earned a split in the four game series up in Neverwinter.

Game 1:  Candles 4 - Alpacas 0

A dominate game from Gausman, scattering three hits over 7 2/3 striking out 11 Alpacas. Sandoval pitched the final 1 1/3 for the save.
Three homeruns did Morton in, as Randy picked two ballparks 1-5 at the corral.  Adames, Belt and Stanton went deep of the Alpaca starter.

Kevin Gausman struck out 11 batters at Icewind Dale Corral as the Future Wax Candles beat the Neverwinter Alpacas 4 to 0. Gausman pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Neverwinter batters. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point. Gausman got help from Patrick Sandoval who was credited with his 1st save. Charlie Morton took the loss. He surrended 3 homeruns in his 7 innings. Gausman, when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The importantthing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'

Game 2:  Neverwinter 8 - Future Wax 1

The Alpaca bats came to life in game 2.  A big 4th inning chased Candles starter Clayton Kershaw.  A homer by Bichette followed a few batters later by a three RBI double from Rojas did the damaged.  John Means pitched six strong innings, allowing a 5th inning solo shot to Jonathan Schoop for the only Wax run.  Jonathan Loaisiga pitched the final three inninns to earn the save.

Bo Bichette homered and had 2 RBI as the Neverwinter Alpacas defeated the Future Wax Candles by the score of 8 to 1 at Icewind Dale Corral. The game started off with Neverwinter taking the lead in the first scoring onerunner. Neverwinter out-hit Future Wax for the game, 9 hits to 5. The victory went to John Means who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Means got relief help from Jonathan Loaisiga who gained credit for his the save.  Clayton Kershaw took the loss. He was knocked around by Neverwinter, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Game 3:  Candles 7 - Alpacas 5

What looks like another blowout, the Candles jumped on Alpaca started Mike Fried for seven runs in six innings, including four homers, a pair by lefty killer Mike Zunino who ended up with four RBI's.  Max Scherzer got the win going 6 2/3 strong innings.  The Alpaca's made it close scoring runs in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and one in the 9th but it wasn't enough.  Collin McHugh got the save.

Catcher Mike Zunino cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Icewind Dale Corral as the Future Wax Candles beat the Neverwinter Alpacas 7 to 5. Zunino enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run inthe 1st inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning. Future Wax had a total of 7 hits for the game. The win was credited to Max Scherzer who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Collin McHugh preserved the game for Scherzer, recording his the save. Max Fried was the loser. He served up 4 homeruns in his 6 innings.

Game 4:  Neverwinter 6 - Future Wax 5

In the series closest game, the Candles chased Alpaca starter Anthony Desclafani in the 5th inning after he surrendered five runs with only one out.  The Alpaca bullpen closed the door though as the scrappy Alpaca's chased Woodruff in the 6th inning scoring four in the bottom of the frame off eventual losing pitcher Tanner Houch.  Tony Watson gets the win with Kittredge and Antone holding it down allowing Gallegos to get the save.

The Neverwinter Alpacas offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 6th inning and and the Future Wax Candles locked up in an exciting one-run gameat Icewind Dale Corral. The final score was the Neverwinter Alpacas 6, theFuture Wax Candles 5. Neverwinter tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning when they came upwith 4 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Cedric Mullins who came through for the home fans when he doubled plating two runs. Future Wax tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. Tony Watson was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Watson got relief help from Giovanny Gallegos who gained credit for the save. Tanner Houck(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Randy 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'

(2/1)
New Orleans jumped back into sole possesion of 4th place last night winning 3 of 4 from Oceanus.

lost the opener and had to scratch their way from behind in the 9th in the closer but earned a hard fought 3 to 1 series win against Oceanus.  Statistically, the Ellis outhit the Assholes .262 to .198.  But Oceanus did have 10 homers to New Orleans' 8.  That's a lot of homers and there were probably at least 10 ballpark homer chances that were missed.  Austin Riley was the star for New Orleans with 2 homers and 6 RBI.  Jose Ramirez had 3 homers and 5 RBI for the Assholes.  Anyway, here are the game summaries.  Robin will be happy to hear there was no slapping involved.  Some minimal stroking though.

Game 1

The Oceanus Assholes defeated the New Orleans Ellis by a score of 5 to 2 at
Rehoboth Parking Lot.

Walker Buehler pitched a fine game.  He went 8 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks.  Despite losing, New Orleans out-hit Oceanus 7 to 4.

Ryan Pressly recorded the save, his 11th on the season.  Zack Wheeler ended up with the loss.  He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks.

Brandon Nimmo and Jose Ramirez homered for Oceanus and former Asshole Matt Olson had a dinger as well.

Game 2

The New Orleans Ellis registered 4 runs in the 5th inning (it was still a game at 4-1 until then) and had an easy time of it at Rehoboth Parking Lot defeating the Oceanus Assholes by a score of 12 to 4.

Blake Treinen came through for Harold with an excellent relief stint.  He gave up just 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 and 2/3 innings.  Offensively, New Orleans was a juggernaut.  They scored in 6 separate innings.

The losing pitcher was Aaron Nola.  He surrendered 3 homeruns in his 4 and 2/3 innings.

Game 3

At Rehoboth Parking Lot the New Orleans Ellis outdistanced the Oceanus Assholes by a final score of 6 to 2.

Sandy Alcantara pitched okay, well enough for the win.  He went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks and gave up 2 homeruns.  New Orleans had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Joe Musgrove was given the loss.  He was knocked around by New Orleans,
allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Ryan "Elvis" Pressly, brought in to keep Oceanus within striking distance, walked 4 batters in the 9th inning and New Orleans got a couple of insurance runs instead.  Maybe he was pissed that it wasn't a save opportunity.

Austin Riley's 3-run homer was the game winner in 5th (the game had been tied at 1-1 through 4 innings).

Game 4

Myles Straw had 2 base hits as the New Orleans Ellis bested the Oceanus Assholes in 10 innings 5 to 4 at Rehoboth Parking Lot.

The score was tied at 4 after nine.  New Orleans was victorious in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Austin Riley stroked a base-hit scoring the run.  Riley took second on the throw.  Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.

The win was credited to Emmanuel Clase who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Garrett Whitlock was the loser in relief.  He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 innings.

This was the best game of the series and Harold truly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.  After a seesaw battle, Oceanus had a 4-3 lead heading into the 9th inning.  But the Ellis scraped together a run courtesy of 2 singles and a sac fly.

(1/26) If the season ended today, Eric and Harold would be in a one-game playoff...The most interesting play from tonight occurred when Buster Posey hit a FB RF(X) to Jesse Winker, a 4.  Posey rolled a 1 (triple) and a rare play, which turned into an inside the park HR when Winker and Starling Marte collided...Gerrit Cole (5-1) lost his first game of the season...In his first AB of the season, F. Reyes rolled a '20' on a 1-19 HR.

Six teams are now at the trading deadline for the post-season (before game 41) and also get a day off...Draft Day, Saturday April 1.

(1/24)
Future Wax knocked New Orleans out of 4th place by percentage points by winning three of four.  This means that Eric is now in 4th place!  The bottom 5 teams are all still in the playoff hunt, just 3 games separating them.

The original series was rescheduled due to Hamilton tickets.  Turned out the best option was remote play, on Monday (1/23). It was the battle of the Doldrums Duo, two down-on-their-luck underperforming (from manager’s view) teams, would be contenders with losing records, having each just lost a series to one of the bottom two teams (at the time).

A few crashes and reboots, but nothing serious. In the opening game, Gausmann and pen were  dominant in a 6-0 shut out. Homers by O’Neill and Stanton powered the offense.

The sloppy second game had two errors and an unearned run for both teams. Buster Posey was injured on a HBP, taking him out of the series. The difference in the game was the 4-run 4th for FW, featuring homers by Belt, Machado, and Murphy (called up to concern catcher AB).  Final score, 5-4 FW (Scherzer W, McHugh SV). Harold responded by shelling Woodruff in a 12-2 laugher, including 8 runs in the 5th (5 W, S, D, 3 run HR by Bryant).

In the finale, Judge tied the game at 2 with a 3
rd inning homer. Randy responded with a small ball run, sac bunting a man to second, setting up an O’Neill double. Peralta, Mayza, and Houck shut down Harold’s offense the rest of the way, and the 3-2 lead held out. (Thanks to Harold missing two 1-13 BP HR chances along the way).

Draft Day Saturday April 1

(1/21) Satisfying splits today for the Holliston household.  In the first series, Bay City and Oceanus played four close games.  Game 1 was a pitchers' duel between Buehler and Cole.  BC prevailed 2-1, with Cole pitching 7 innings yielding just one run and 3 hits.  Aaron Loup got his 3rd save.  The Asshole came back to tie the series 4-3, a 2-run J. Ramirez homer powering Nola to the win, with Pressley earning another save. OC reluctantly won game 3 in 10 innings, 3-1, scoring the winning run on a Benintendi error. BC salvaged the split 2-0, with Burnes pitching 8 shutout innings of 3-hit ball, Kopech the save.

Next up, the Alpacas won two close games over the Nuclear Warheads (3-2 and 3-1) and were in the driver's seat. Acuna's 3-run blast off Andrew 'Harry' Chafin in the 7th inning of game 1 erased the ND lead. Gallegos held on for the save.  Lefty Max Fried loved Gackle Park's dimensions in game 2 (as did Means in game 1) and he Iglesias, Bleir, and Gallegos (another save) frustrated North Dakota.  North Dakota's lefty, Robbie Ray got the last laugh with a 9-1 CG laugher in game 3, backed by Tucker's 3-run homer.  ND held a 5-3 lead with two out in the 9th inning of game 4 when Freddie Freeman hit a game tying 2-run homer of L. Hendricks.  Bottom of the 9th, ND loads the bases with one out.  Inield and outfield in, Mookie Betts belts a line drive off Antone for the satusfying split.

All games were 'league games'  in the same league.  So I looked to see that the computer gave MVP status to BC's Starlin Marte (7 for 16 .438) 1 HR, 3 RBIS.  Cy Young award goes to Corbin Burnes. The day's allstars were C-S. Perez BC, 1B-Vlad BC, 2B-Lowe ND, SS-Crawford ND, 3B-Ramirez OC, LF-Gallo ND, CF-Marte BC, RF-Tucker ND, Pitchers (Burnes BC, Ray ND, Cole BD, Pressley OC, Gallegos NV).

Draft Day, Saturday April 1.

(1/20)
The Dead Nettles took 3 of 4 from Constantinople in rainy Mansfield last night to pull within one game of 4th place. Tom was as always a gracious host, and Eric was as always expecting a good thrashing. But the Manatees, despite their potent offense, just couldn't get anything going until the 4th game. Scores: DN won 6-5, 12-6 and 5-3, and a CN claimed game 4, 10-0.

Game 1 seems to have set the tone for the series. Ahead 6-4 in the top of the 9th, Hader came in for the save and promptly walked the bases loaded with no outs. Tired, he was removed for Ranger Suarez, who did a masterful job wriggling out of the jam, surrendering only a single run on a fielder's choice. Game 3 was 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th when Carson Kelly cranked a solo shot to give DN an insurance run "that they simply didn't need," according to Tom.

Offensive star for DN goes to Juan Soto, who hit 2 dingers and drove in 6. For CN, Urias was dominant in game 4, giving up four measly singles in 7 innings while inducing four double plays.

Eric is now the first team to game 40 - a day off and also the trading deadline for post-season eligibility (actually before game 41) ... Draft Day, Saturday April 1.

(1/19)
Just when they thought they had some momentum, Future Wax inexplicably dropped 3 out of 4 to lowly Oceanus.  Shockingly, the Oceanus pitching staff was the star of the series.  The starters all pitched 6.1 innings or more and didn't allow more than 3 runs.  Ryan "Elvis" Pressly notched 3 saves.

The most amusing in retrospect but annoying at the time moments occurred when Mitch Garver got injured, which happened twice in the series.  As Garver was injury-proof, we went through multiple Undo / Redo sequences where Garver hit homers 4 out of 6 times I believe it was.

Both Randy and Arnie have commented on Oceanus bunting way more than every other team in the league.  In this series I think the small ball did pay off a few times.

Here are the slightly-annotated computer-generated game summaries:

Game 1  In a two run game the Oceanus As sholes got by Future Wax by the score of 4 to 2.

Future Wax was unable to climb back into it after Oceanus went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Byron Buxton slapped a one-base hit.  Buxton was safe at second on a stolen base.  One out later, Jose Altuve then slapped a single scoring the run.  Future Wax threatened in the 9th but Oceanus was able to put down the rally.

Walker Buehler went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Ryan Pressly
earned the save.  Kevin Gausman was the losing pitcher.  He gave up
4 runs (only 1 earned) and 8 hits in 7 innings.

Game 2

Brandon Woodruff came through with a solid 6 innings at Rehoboth Parking Lot
where Future Wax beat the Oceanus Assholes by the score of 5 to 2.

Future Wax went ahead for good in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Jason Castro who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he smashed a two-run homer.  Future Wax finished with 7 hits in the victory.

The win went to Woodruff who allowed no runs in 6 innings. Tim Mayza
recorded the save.  German Marquez was the loser.  Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 11 batters in 7 innings.

Game 3

In a good matchup it was the Oceanus Assholes 5, Future Wax 2 at Rehoboth Parking Lot.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning Oceanus went on top for good as they scored 2
runs on 1 base hits.  Trevor Story got a double on a 1-2 chance (out otherwise).  Oceanus finished with just 5 hits in the victory.

Logan Webb went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Ryan Pressly earned the save, his 2nd of the series.  Freddy Peralta ended up with the loss.  He gave up only 2 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings.

Game 4

Joe Musgrove and Marcus Stroman treated the Oceanus fans to a fine pitching duel at Rehoboth Parking Lot.  The Oceanus Assholes eventually emerged as victors over Future Wax by the score of 3 to 1.

Oceanus plated all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits.  Jose Ramirez led off and got things going when he singled.  Jose Abreu followed and he doubled driving in a run.  Trevor Story then doubled plating one more runner.  Brandon Nimmo stepped in and he slapped a single scoring the final run of the inning.  Ryan Pressly earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 3rd save of the series..

P.s. Jose Abreu went 7 for 12 with two homers for Oceanus.  Meanwhile, 4 players (Jason Castro, Wily Adames, Brandon Belt and Giancarlo Stanton) combined to hit .326 with 4 homers and 6 RBI for Future Wax.

(1/14)  North Dakota handed erstwhile first place Bay CIty its first series loss of the season in convincing fashion, tightening up the race for first place.
It's a rare SOMBILLA home and home series for BC, which finished the first half winning 3 of 4 from ND at home. ND was happy to get back home where they'd played only 12 of their first 32 games. BC was happy to get out of Gackle Park.

The two managers were wasted on Friday night for the first two games.  The series started ominously for BC when Castellanos ended the first inning threat with a clutch out. Polanco's sac fly (after two walks) gives ND a 1-0 lead without a hit.  A Goldschmidt sac fly in the 6th makes it 2-0, ND.  BC loads the bases with 2 out in the 8th but cannot score, as former BC pitcher Jimmy Nelson (why can't I get players like that?) shuts the door and gets the save.  BC pitchers (McCullers, Alvarez, Loup) give up just two hits, but ND pitchers (deGrom, Pomeranz, Sewald, Kimbrel, Nelson) give up just three hits and 0 runs.  Final score 2-0.

ND's Willson Contreras smacks a three-run homer off Blake Snell in the first inning of game 2, but BC chips away.  A run scoring DP in the 3rd and solo homers by Benintendi and reigning league MVP Sal Perez in the 7th and 8th tie it up. BC's Benintendi guns out Phillips trying to score on a 1-13 (after Crawford's double) to win the game in the bottom of the 9th to send the game to extra innings tied at 3. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Jared Walsh hits a FB RF(X) to Teoscar Hernandez, which turns into a game ending ghost-runner scoring single.  It would have also been a 2-base error but the game is over so no error is counted.  Small consolation for Robin, who says she will never again play on Friday the 13th.  Arnie points out it was Friday the 13th for both teams, but is countered by "only one of us believes in it".  Paul Goldschmidt, injured in the first inning of this game and is out for the series, would disagree. (BC maintained its "no homers allowed to Goldschmidt in 2023" by beaning him.)

Nobody is high for game 3 Saturday.  The game is never in doubt, with ND scoring 2 runs in the 2nd (bunch of singles), 3 in the 4th (Gallo HR, rbis from Crawford and Lowe) and 4 in the 5th (Phillips HR and 3-run double from Lowe) to make it 9-1. BC scores 4 in the 9th but it's too little too late.  Final score 9-5.

The ND manager feels guilty and openly roots for BC in game 4 (while still managing to win of course).  And BC jumps out to a 2-0 lead on Vlad's 2-run shot off Bassitt. Brandon Crawford's homer off Montas makes it 2-1 after 4.  In the 5th, an rbi single for Stallings and a 2-run single from Crawford gives ND the 4-2 lead.  Kimbrel and L. Hernandez  pitch the final 2 2/3 innings for the hold and the save, despite ND's quiet cheering for his wife.

Star of the series Brandon Crawford .471 (8 for 17), 3 runs, 1 HR, 5 RBI (Robin blames this on brother-in-law Gerrit Cole feeding him info on BC out of frustration that he was skipped in the rotation in Gackle Park.)

Draft Day Saturday April 1

(1/11)
Asked about his team’s sudden surge, Dead Nettle’s manager said, “I guess the secret is not caring.” No longer dwelling on the bottom with the Assholes, the Nettles hosted Neverwinter Tuesday night and took 3 of 4. The pace was brisk, the banter light. All the games were tight. DN won the first 3 contests, 4-1, 4-3, & 2-1, with the Alpacas salvaging the last game, 6-1. Game 3 was the heartbreaker for Sam, taking a 1-0 lead into the 9th. But Gallegos, with his 14 saves, lost control and walked himself into a pickle, loading the bases with one out, and allowing Joc Pederson to stroke a two-out double for the walk-off. Neither team could hit, but DN’s was more timely, and NW got robbed all night long on splits, to DN’s great relief (and consternation).

(1/8)  From Eric:
When Harold showed up today I asked if he was looking to make any more upgrades after getting Olson from Jed. I figure Jed needs a “tanking” (Harold’s word, not mine) partner, but Harold and I couldn’t muster the enthusiasm to get anything done. Besides, doesn’t my team “suck” (Arnie’s word, not mine) anyway? I thought so. And apparently they do suck; nor would management object to losing twice as many games as winning for the remainder of the season. But unfortunately this year I own Harold, and took another series, 3 games to 1. Season: 6-2. And against the rest of the league? A robust 6-18.

Anyway, the Dead Nettles embarrassed New Orleans in game one, 17-4, but New Orleans answered with a 13-3 clobbering of their own in game 2. Games 3 and 4 went to the Nettles, 7-5 and 11-9. Despite having decent offensive numbers of their own, NO’s ballpark surrendered too much the Nettles. Nolan Arenado especially took advantaged of the short fences, feasting on NO’s pitching, belting 6 homers while driving in 11. No one in the Nettles’ front office is worried that this is a trend, but the fans are uneasy.

...

Meanwhile, Jed's honorable tanking was more successful than Eric's, as he dropped into last place losing 3 of 4 to North Dakota.  Don't get me wrong - he's managing to win.  Bunting more than anyone else in the SOMBILLA, surprising his opponents, always searching for better matchups.  But... his bullpen. Once in the game, well, that's why it's called honorable tanking.

The plan appeared to be foiled in game 1 when Jesus Sanchez smacked a 2-run homer off Bieber in the 5th to give OC a 3-2 lead.  ND never was able to feast on the bullpen as Buehler pitched 8 innings for the 4-2 win, scattering 10 hits.  Copernicus liked Kepler's homer and Ryan Pressley, a legit reliever, got the save.

It looked like another humiliating defeat for ND in game 2 as the Assholes pounded former Asshole Lance Lynn to take a 5-1 lead after 3.  But a 5-run outburst in the 6th inning for ND tires out Webb (Crawford's 3-run blast the big blow), and it's time for....the OC bullpen.  The difference in the teams' bullpens is stark - Kimbrel and waiver pickup C. Green pitch 4 1/3 innings of 1-run ball, while, OC's Whitlock and L. Garcia implode.  Gallo and Tucker homer for ND, final score 9-6.

The story in Game 3 was ND's pitching - Chris Bassit (now 4-1) pitched 7 innings of 2-hit shutout ball, and Sewald and L. Hendricks (7th save) combined for a 3-hit shutout. Gallo hit another homer for ND.

The Assholes jumped out to a 2-0 lead off Alex Wood in game 4, but that lead was short-lived.  Next year's Red Sox SS Trevor Story made two errors in the 2nd, leading to 4 ND runs as the Nuclear Warheads never looked back, winning 7-4.  Aaron Nola was the hard luck losing pitcher, giving up just 3 earned runs in 7 innings and striking out 14. For ND, Kyle Tucker homered and Hendricks picked up his 8th save.

Star of the series: Brandon Crawford 6 for 19 (.316), 1 HR, 1 triple, 6 RBI

...

Future Wax won its first series of the season earlier today, to jump into 5th place, 2 games behind New Orleans.  The visiting Manatees started the series with a bam, hitting 4 home runs off Gausman over 7 innings. Tatis had two for 5 RBI, with JD Martinez and Ruf contributing solo shots.  FW managed only 1 run (an O’Neil homer) against Manoah and friends in a 7-1 loss.

In game 2, Tom took the lead in the 3rd on Segura BP homer, then added an insurance run in the 6th when JD doubled in Segura. But the FW bats finally came alive in the 7th, with a Springer single followed by a Cronenworth double, followed by a Stanton triple to tie the score. Machado then got him home via a sac fly for a 3-2 lead. But with 2 on and 2 out in the 9th, Gurriel hits a clutch single to tie the game. However, Machado hits a walk off two run shot to even the series.

Game 3 the most action packed of the series. Stroman yielded 3 singles to open the 4th, followed by a Ruf 3-run blast. But the Wax came back with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, on 2 walks and a short single setting up a Cronenworth grand slam. The Manatees took the lead again on a bases loaded walk in the 5th, but Adames re-tied the game with a lead off homer in the bottom of the frame.  FW took the lead in the 8th on a Springer homer, only to have Harper restore the tie with a 9th inning homer. Finally Zunino homered in the bottom of the 10th for an 8-6 walk-off win for FW.

In the final game, FW scored 2 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th. Tom started a comeback with a no out 2 run homer by Tatis in the 9th. But JD missed a BP HR, and the Manatees then went quietly, losing 6-2.

This was FW’s first series win of the season, having tied or been swept in every other series this year.

Draft Day, Saturday April 1.

(1/1) In Florida, in a series played over three days and two years, Bay City took 3 of 4 from ND to jump back into (a tie for) first place, a whopping 5 games ahead of third place. In Game 1, ND ominously stranded three in the first inning without scoring. Meanwhile, BC could do nothing against deGrom but broke out in the 7th vs. Chad Green to take a 3-1 lead on a Winker homer and back-to-back-to-back doubles by Castellanos, McMahon, & Benintendi. Snell held ND to a solo Goldschmidt homer, with Warren, Leone, and Loup shutting down ND.

In Game 2, BC took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Winker long single, but ND came back to tie it in the second and took a brief 1-run lead on another Goldschmidt homer in the third before BC took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a two-run Vlad homer. Cole outlasted Bassitt for the 5-3 win, with Tepera notching his 4th save.

In Game 3, injury call-up (for A. Garcia) Laureano led off with a triple in the first and scored on a Perez single, but that was it for Bay City, as Burnes allowed a two-run homer to (again) Goldschmidt, and Wood, Sewald, Kimbrel, and Hendricks (7th save) combined to shut down the Bay City bats for a 2-1 North Dakota victory.

Game 4 featured a pitchers' duel between Ray and Montas (marred only by a Teoscar Hernandez bp solo shot for BC after ND's Betts missed one), but they both lost control in the 6th. Arnie tied it at 1-1 in the top of the sixth on a mess of walks and a single (leaving the bases loaded), but BC proceeded to get its own mess of walks, followed by a rare 2-base error by Mookie (with Castellanos pinch-hitting for Benintendi) and then a 3-run Correa homer off Sewald to put it away for the 6-1 BC win. BC pitchers have NOT allowed a Goldschmidt homer in 2023.

Draft Day, Saturday, April 1

(12/27)
Neverwinter's improbably season continues as they sweep the Assholes to regain first place by one game.

Three very close games, only game 3 was a blowout.

Game 1:  Neverwinter wins 6 - 5 over Oceanus
Giolito gives up two homers in the first two innings spotting Oceanus five runs, two costly errors by Alpaca third baseman Yoan Moncada did not help.  But the Alpaca's come back with homers by Acuna, India and Realmuto to secure the win.  Gallegos secures the win with another save.  The Assholes only had three hits all night, two being the afore mentioned homers.  Neverwinter pounded out 12 hits in the win.

Lucas Giolito struck out 10 batters as the Neverwinter Alpacas bested the Oceanus Assholes 6 to 5 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Giolito (1-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings and surrendered 2 'round-trippers'. Overall Neverwinter out-hit Oceanus 12 to 3. Giovanny Gallegos recorded his 1st save. Luis Garcia(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 innings of work. Jed was impressed with Giolito and his 10 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

Game 2:  Neverwinter wins 3 - 1 over Oceanus
In a pitchers duel, Morton outdoes Webb.  Each recorded seven strikeouts and there were no homers in this game.  Morton pitched seven strong and Gallegos pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

At Rehoboth Parking Lot, the Oceanus faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Charlie Morton(1-0) finally bested his Oceanus counter part, Logan Webb(0-1), by the score of 3 to 1. Neverwinter delivered all the runs required in the 6th inning when they scored3 runs on 3 hits. Neverwinter had 7 hits for the afternoon. Giovanny Gallegos was credited with his 2nd save. Webb was given the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Game 3:  Alpacas win 9 - 3 over Oceanus
Both starting pitchers had tough starts, but the Alpaca's tired Asshole starter Marquez and Means pitched well enough to earn the win.  Jonathan India was the star with two homers and three RBI's.  J.T. Realmuto's three-run bomb in the eighth put the game away.  The teams combined for 23 hits.  Means earns his 3rd win of the year for the Alpaca's.

Jonathan India launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Neverwinter Alpacas beat the Oceanus Assholes by a score of 9 to 3. India had a good day at the plate. He clubbed a solo home run in the 1stinning and cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd inning. Neverwinter finished with 12 hits in the victory. John Means (1-0) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. German Marquez (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 3 and 1/3innings of work.

Game 4:  Alpacas win 8 - 6 over Oceanus
Neither starter had their A game tonight as Anthony Desclafani is chased in the 5th. Nola lasted 6 2/3 was handed the loss surrendering 7 runs on 10 hits.  The game went back and forth a few times before the Alpaca's secured the victory.  Two homers by Ronald Acuna were the big blow netting him 5 RBI's.  He was inured early in game 2, missed game three but was ready for game 4.  Both the Alpaca's and Assholes dealt with injuries throughout this series, both happy to have a day off before their next series begin.  Richard Blier picked up the win in relief with Gallegos recording his 3rd save of the series.

Ronald Acuna smashed 2 homeruns as the Neverwinter Alpacas defeated the Oceanus Assholes 8 to 6 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Acuna really lit it up for Neverwinter. The Oceanus fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4thinning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 7th inning. Neverwinter out-hit Oceanus for the game, 13 hits to 8. Richard Bleier(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Giovanny Gallegos earned the save, his 3rd. The losing pitcher was Aaron Nola(0-1). Neverwinter knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 7 runs in 6and 1/3 innings.

New record:  Most HBP one game, Abreau, by Sam.

(12/21)  New Orleans took 3 of 4 over CN last night to take hold of 4th place for the time being.
Game 1: NO wins 6-0 as Wheeler, Head, McGee and Bednar combine for the three hit shutout.
Game 2: NO wins 5-4 in 12 innings. NO jumps out to a 4-2 lead, but Harper ties it with a 2 run shot in the 8th. NO wins it with the Olson single in the 12th.
Game 3: CON wins 3-2, with Ruf and Smith hitting run scoring triples early to take the lead. The CON pitching allowed only two baserunners after the third inning.
Game 4: NO bats come alive in the 9-1 win, hitting 4 HR’s in the romp.

....

Happy Holidays from the SOMBILLA Grinch himself! (Send your stats to Tom)

(12/19) Robin beat the disappointing Manatees 3 out of 4 games earlier tonight.
Bay City took advantage of pitcher-friendly Manatee Park (Dome? Coastal Estuary?) to use three pitchers who "wouldn't be caught dead" in any other park, resting the beleaguered bullpen to maintain control of first place.

All the scoring in Game 1 came in the first inning, when homers by Vlad and Castellanos gave BC a 3-run lead (shortened to a 2-run lead when Tatis homered off Cole in the bottom of the inning). Cole struck out 10 in 6 1/3 to best Ohtani, 3-1.

Game 2 featured BC homers by Perez and Teoscar Hernandez (the latter a pinch hit on a homer 1 roll) and veteran Yu Darvish allowed only 3 hits and 1 run in 8 innings, striking out 12 in his first and last start of the season in a 4-1 BC win.

A rain out before Game 3 seemed to rejuvenate the Manatees, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first on a bunch of hits and walks off Montas. A Castellanos homer following a Winker double cut the lead in half in the second, but Tom got 1 back with an Ohtani homer. Final score 5-3.

Tom was on his way to a satisfying split, leading 2-1 through 7, thanks to a Tatis first-inning homer. Another Tatis homer in the 8th gave Tom a 3-1 lead going to the ninth, but a late HBP plus INJ to Segura forced him to use Devers at second base, and Bay City capitalized on his poor defense to work a single plus error, followed by a walk to bring up Santiago Espinal, who had hit into a clutch out in the second, with two runners on. He made up for it with a 3-run shot on a homer 1-19 chance, and Tepera closed it out to give BC a 4-3 win.

(12/11)
In the early season Toilet Bowl series, the yet-to-be-officially-derided Oceanus Assholes took three out of four games from the "laughable" Dead Nettles.  One of the themes of the series was Eric missing 1-10 homer chances.  Jose Abreu hit .500 with 2 homers, 2 doubles and 4 RBI for the Assholes.  The Oceanus starting pitching was outstanding.  Pederson went 3 for 5 for the Dead Nettles, including a homer, triple and 4 RBI.  Big impact in limited appearances.

First time for me managing in extra innings!  I thought it was kind of fun starting with the runner on second.  We both scored one run in the 10th but then Eric broke it open in the 11th.  Anyway, cool that the computer game can handle it.

Here are the slightly-edited, computer-generated game stories.

Game 1

In a lop-sided win the Oceanus Assholes ripped the Dead Nettles by a 7 to 2 count.

Walker Buehler earned his pay with a solid performance for Oceanus.  He was reached for 7 hits and no walks in 8 innings.  Oceanus ended up with 13 hits for the game while Dead Nettles had 7.

Adam Wainwright was the loser.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 and 1/3 innings of work.

Game 2

Joc Pederson left the yard and had 4 RBI as the Dead Nettles defeated the
Oceanus Assholes in 11 innings 8 to 5 at Rehoboth Parking Lot.

Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings.  Dead Nettles was victorious in the 11th inning.  After two outs Juan Soto got things rolling when he drew a walk.  Pederson next to the plate and he belted a three-run homer.  A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Josh Hader was the winner allowing 3 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Scott Barlow got the save.  Luis Garcia absorbed the loss in relief.  The Dead Nettles knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 4 runs in 2 innings.

Game 3

Second baseman Jose Altuve jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the
Oceanus Assholes beat the Dead Nettles club by a score of 9 to 1.

Oceanus started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring a single run.  Oceanus finished with 9 hits while the Dead Nettles ended up with 4.

Joe Musgrove went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory.  Exhausted Nathan Eovaldi was hit with the loss.  Oceanus scored big getting 9 runs off him in 8 innings.

Game 4

Jesus Sanchez lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI and Logan Webb
pitched 8 strong innings at Rehoboth Parking Lot as the Oceanus Assholes beat
the Dead Nettles 4 to 2.

Oceanus struck for 2 runs in the 4th inning when they came up with 3 base hits.  The big moment was provided by Sanchez who made the Oceanus fans a happy lot when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.  Oceanus finished with 10 hits while Dead Nettles ended up with 4.

The victory was credited to Webb who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs.  Ryan Pressly gained credit for the save.  The losing pitcher was Trevor Rogers.

(12/9)
Result: split.  All games decided by 3 runs or less.  It was really rather an astonishing display of bad luck in game 4 for Randy.  At least 2 1-13 homer chances missed.  Costly errors.  Stanton was the star for Future Wax with 3 homers.  Verdugo went 5 for 11 for the Assholes...
As some of you know, Robin and I are heading to Cuba tomorrow for a week (for me to play old guy softball).  Internet there is spotty at best so I may not be able to send out any results updates next week...A reminder that manager schedule surveys are due Sunday 12/18.

(12/6) A weird series ends in a split. North Dakota had all the luck in a 1-0 game 1 nailbiter.  Jared Walsh's bases loaded single in the 3rd inning off of Manoah was all the scoring for the game as deGrom, Chafin, Nelson, and Hendricks combined on a 3-hit shutout.  The key play of the game was Kyle Tucker's robbing of Votto's 2-run homer in the 4th.

ND and Robbie Ray were sitting pretty with an 8-2 lead (on homers by Lowe, Walsh (2), and Yelich) with 2 out in the 7th inning of game 2.  Then the roof caved in.  CN loaded the bases to tire out Ray and human victory cigar Chad Greene came in.  Rafael Devers promptly hits a pinch-hit grand slam and it's 8-6. In the 8th, Rizzo singles and Pomeranz comes in.  Trout hits a 2-run pinch-hit home run to tie it, 8-8. It stays that way until the 11th, when CN scores 4 off Nelson (W. Smith a 2-run homer) before there are any out.  So ND brings in OF Garret Cooper to pitch to save innings.  Final score 13-8.

In game 3, CN went up 8-2 on 3 solo shots by Devers, 2 solo shots by Harper, and a 2-run homer by Seager (along with an unearned run).  The roof stayed in place.  Final score 8-4, former ND pitcher Kyle Gibson the winning pitcher.

Game 4 was a sloppy see-saw affair with 7 errors combined (4 CN, 3 ND), leading to 5 unearned runs.  G. Cooper hit a 2-run shot in the 1st to give ND a 2-0 lead.  Joe's error leads to a 3-0 ND lead after 2.  W. Smith and Gallo trade homers to make it 4-1.  ND's 1 ss B. Crawford's error leads to a run and a fielder's choice makes it 4-3.  Tatis's 2-run blast off Bassitt Hound in the 5th gives CN their first lead of the game 5-4. Goldschmidt's homer off Sulser ties it 5-5 and Segura boots a ball leading to Cooper's rbi to give ND the 6-5 lead.  Tucker throws out Segura at the plate on a 1-15 chance in the 6th, and Goldschmidt's 2-run homer off Staumont after Votto's error gives ND the 8-5 lead.  Lowe's homer makes it 9-5 after 8.  With 2-out and one on in the 9th, ND relieves Hendricks with a tired Greene to save innings, raising Tom's hackles.  But he strikes out Tatis to end the game and salvage the split.

(12/5)
Robin jumped back into first place with a 7-1 day/night in festive Marlblehead, with Harold avoiding being swept only with an extra-inning win in Game 4.

BC's Montas (8 innings) and Kopech (1 inning) held New Orleans to a single and 3 walks (all by former BC fan favorite Posey) in Game 1, and the single was due only to Vlad's poor range on a 1Bx (Next year, when Vlad's a Gold Glover, Montas would have had a no-hitter). Sal Perez knocked in all 5 Bay City runs with 2 homers in a 5-0 game.

In game 2, the hated Trevor Bauer gave up a homer on the first pitch in the bottom of the 1st to Starling Marte, walked Vlad, and Winker later got a triple on a triple 1 chance (one of many 1 rolls in this series--mostly by Robin). (Ed note: Robin continues to pound domestic abusers - the Osuna effect).  Marte tripled in the 4th, but fell a double short of the cycle. Vlad homered twice. Robert homered in the 3rd for NO to finally get them on the board, and Ortega hit a grand slam in the 4th, when NO took a (brief) 6-4 lead and tired McCullers. The repulsive Bauer was removed in the 5th, and BC went on to a 10-6 win.

Game 3 featured NO homers by Olson and Bryant with no BC homers in a back-and-forth game that BC won in 10 when Vlad doubled in cute ghost runner Albies. Final 5-4.

Sonny Gray outpitched Gerrit Cole in Game 4, as Harold led 4-0 into the 9th. A grand slam by Perez off Treinen sent the game into extras, and NO put it away with a homer by Olson off Kopech to score 2; Robert added a 2-run single, and BC went quietly in the bottom of the 10th for the 8-4 NO win.

For the series, Ozzie Albies performed flawlessly at second and got a few timely walks. Vlad and Perez were the hitting stars, with Frankie Montas's 1-hitter leading the BC pitching.

In the BC-DN series, the Nettles had no trouble with BC ace Corbin Burnes, taking a 5-2 lead on a Schwindel homer and a bunch of doubles before chasing Burnes in the 7th. BC clawed back with 2 in the 8th on another Perez homer, and the aforementioned Albies gave BC the 7-5 win with a 3-run dinger in the 9th.

In Game 2, the Nettles got a hit off Montas in the 1st, and several more later, but he left in the 8th up 2-1, only to see Alvarez allow the game tying sac fly. Albies was again the hero with a 2-run single in the 11th, followed by a Marte rbi single, and BC won 5-2.

Game 3 featured another Perez homer and two more 2-run singles by Albies, as BC pounded DN lefty Rogers for a 9-3 win.

Game 4 represented BC's fourth extra-inning game of the bash. BC took a 4-run lead in the second on a Castellanos homer and Baddoo triple, but Eric countered with 3 in the fourth (only 1 earned) on homers by Xander and Muncy off cute Joe Ryan, making his SOMBILLA debut. The homers were the only hits he allowed in 7 innings, but DN denied him the win by homering (Soto) off the limited Art Warren in the bottom of the 9th. Gurriel knocked in the ghost runner with a single in the 10th, and Ozzie Albies had yet another rbi single to give BC the 6-4 win and the sweep.

Across the table, Harold was again 1-hit, this time by a Woodruff-Sims effort, and (I think) Randy hit 2 grand slams in one game. FW, coming off an 8-game losing streak, split both series. Tip of the hat (or baseball cap) to Randy for not only being the first manager to show up at Harold's but also finishing both his series before the other match (although, to be fair, each of them went into extra innings twice).

...

Remember, all teams get a day off after games 20, 28, and 40.  This affects injuries and pitchers' rest.

(12/1) The surprising Neverwinter Alpacas swept into first place over the equally surprising pre-season favorites Future Wax at the home of the Wax last night.

Game 1: Alpacas win 4 - 3 in 10 innings. Giolito and Woodruff both pitched well but didn't factor into the decision. Kittridge got the win and Gallegos the save in the extra inning affair.  18 total batters left on base by both teams.

Game 2:  Neverwinter wins 7 - 6. A Schwarber blast after a costly error allowed the Alpaca's to score four in the top of the 7th.  This offset a two-homer performer by Zunino off of Fried.  Loaisiga gets the win with Gallegos his second save of the series.

Game 3:  Alpacas win 7 - 5. Only game decided by more then one run.  Morton and Scherzer both gave up 5 runs , 2 HR's each and neither were involved with the decision.  After falling behind 5 -4 after six, Neverwinter score singles runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th.  Bender records the win with Antone the save.

Game 4: Neverwinter holds on with a 4 -3 victory. Tied after 9, the Alpaca's score two in the 10th and allowed a single run in the bottom of the 10th but hold on for the win.  Gallegos secures his third save of the series, with Antone getting the victory. The Neverwinter Alpacas nipped the Future Wax Candles in 10 innings 4 to 3 at The Wax Home in a hard-fought contest. Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Neverwinter won the hard-fought contest in the 10th inning. Ronald Acuna got things rolling when he laced a one-base hit. Cedric Mullins was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Jonathan India then lined a single which scored a run. Freddie Freeman got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. C.J. Cron came to the plate and lashed a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Future Wax was out-hit by Neverwinter, 9 hits to 5. The win was credited to Tejay Antone (1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Giovanny Gallegos got the save, his 3rd. The loss was charged to Collin McHugh(0-1) in relief.

Send your stats to Tom!

(11/30)  Eric is always the perfect host.  His dogs greet you at the door like you're the best thing in the universe.  He greets you with a warm smile and a laugh.  Beer and luggage flow freely as you catch up on life and shoot the shit.  Then, when you actually play Strat-O, hilarity ensues, while he lets you sweep him. Another hug and you're off into the night, an evening well spent with a friend behind you.

On the table, in began innocuously, with Eric answering ND's 2-run first inning with Soto's 2-run shot off Bieber and it's 2-2 after one.  But North Dakota scores 4 unearned runs (and one earned) in the 3rd and 4th thanks to errors by the 1 3B Aronado and 1 CF Bellinger to make it 7-3.  Homers by Alvarez and Aronado make it a 7-5 game after 7, but Barnes(!), Romano and L. Hendricks close the door to preserve the victory.

Game 2 was another close game.  Aronado's rbi double off Lynn gives DN the early 1-0 lead.  Rbi's by Walsh and Tucker (a combined 4 hits and 3 rbis in game 1) make it 2-1, and Soler's solo HR in the 4th of Ian "Aqualung" Anderson makes it 3-1.  Soto misses Eric's 2nd bp HR (1-15) but Mickey Brantley (why can't Robin get players like that) doubles in a run in the 5th for DN to make it 3-2.  A pinch-hit HR by Andrew Vaughn off Harry Chapin Chafin in the 8th inning ties it up 4-4.  Joey Gallo's solo blast off Edwin Diaz in the 8th gives ND the 5-4 lead and Liam Hendricks pitches the 9th for his 2nd save of the series.

In game 3, a pissed off Nettles' manager jumps out to a 3-0 lead (Soto rbi triple, Schwindel 2-run homer), but ND answers with 4 of their own (Contreras 3-run homer the big blow) in the 2nd to take a 4-3 lead.  Undaunted, Eric comes back with 5 in the bottom of the 2nd (Schwindel's bases loaded triple and error, a little-league grand slam the big blow) and it's 8-4 and Bassitt is tired. Undaunted, ND comes back with a Walsh homer in the 3rd, a Walsh rbi-double in the 4th and a Tucker 2-run homer to tie it 8-8 in the 4th and now Berrios is tire. J. Polanco's 2-run single in the 5th gives ND a 10-8 lead.  4 more ND runs in the 7th, 2 of which were unearned thanks to Vaughn's 2-base error make it 14-8.  Eric misses his 3rd 1-15 bp homer of the series to end the game.

In the finale, homers by Harrison, Crawford, and Soler give ND the early 4-0 lead as former Eric lefty starter Alex Wood goes 5 2/3 giving up just 2 hits and one run.  It stays 4-1 until the bottom of the 9th.  With one out, L. Henricks comes in to attempt his 3rd save of the series. A double, single, and a walk later and he's tired but with only a tired Chafin and Matt Barnes left in the pen, he stays in.  Peterson singles, and its 4-2 bases still loaded against a tired Hendricks.  Soto strikes out.  It's all up to Xander.  It's a clutch out, an exclamation point on the Dead Nettles bad luck, sending them to their 8th defeat in a row.

Star of the series Kyle Tucker 5 for 14 (.357), 4 runs, 2 2B, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6 rbis).

(11/21)
Neverwinter sweeps Dead Nettles out of the frozen north, three close games with one not so close to tie Bay City for first place. Alpacas take game one, 5 -4 .

Means with is first start of the season gets a victory surrendering four runs over seven innings.  Well’s gets the hold, Gallegos the save.  A Franco error ends up costing Wainwright as the Alpacas scored three in the third and a solo blast by Acuna was the difference. One run was the difference at Icewind Dale Corral as the Neverwinter Alpacas defeated the Dead Nettles team 5 to 4.Dead Nettles was unable to claim the lead after Neverwinter went ahead in the 5th inning scoring one runner on 2 hits.  Ronald Acuna smashed a solo-shot out of the park.  Giovanny Gallegos was great in relief and recorded his 1st save.  John Means(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Adam Wainwright(0-1).  He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work.

Neverwinter takes game two 9 - 3.Alpaca’s jumped on Berrios in the bottom of the first and never looked back.  The big blow was a three run bomb by Yaz. Turnbull pitched six shutout innings, tiring in the 7th allowing three runs.  The bullpen cleaned up the 8th and 9th securing the win for Turnbull.  The Neverwinter Alpacas scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and cruised to a 9 to 3 victory over the Dead Nettles ballclub at Icewind Dale Corral. It was a good day for Neverwinter thanks to Kyle Schwarber.  He blasted a solo shot in the 5th inning and tripled scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning. Neverwinter had 11 hits for the night while Dead Nettles had 7. The win went to Spencer Turnbull(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Jose Berrios(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He served up 3 homeruns in his 8innings.

Alpacas take game three 3 – 2. In a close game a Schwarber HR was the difference as both staffs pitched well.  Death roles were the norm in this game for both sides, but particularly for Eric who virtually rolled 4-9 a number of times killing rallies.  Gallegos gets his 2nd save of the series while Morton, once again fails to get out of the 6th inning, but gets the win. 40,050 fans were treated to a fine game at Icewind Dale Corral as only one run separated the combatants at game's end.  The Neverwinter Alpacas won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Neverwinter claimed the early lead in the first inning plating one baserunner using 2 hits.  Neverwinter ended up with 10 hits for the game while Dead Nettles had 4. Charlie Morton(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 5 innings. Morton got help from Giovanny Gallegos who was credited with his 2nd save.  The losing pitcher was Nathan Eovaldi(0-1).

Neverwinter wins the finale 5 -3 sweeping the series.Rogers fell victim to a Muncy error allowing the Alpaca’s to score four times in the bottom of the 4th , enough for Desclafani to get the win.  He pitched seven strong innings.  A 9th inning bomb by Schwindel made it close, but Loaisiga held on for his 1st save.  Neverwinter’s India left in the 3rd inning after being hit by a pitch, while Marte was injured in the 9th on a strikeout. In a good matchup it was the Neverwinter Alpacas 5, the Dead Nettles team 3 at Icewind Dale Corral. Anthony Desclafani(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Neverwinter.  He went 7 innings surrendering 7 hits and no walks.  Dead Nettles had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.Jonathan Loaisiga recorded his 1st save.  Trevor Rogers(0-1) was given the loss.  He gave up 5 runs and 10 hits in 5 innings.

(11/20) Bay City is undefeated when playing with actual dice! After two series of .500 ball on the computer, Bay City took advantage of the Waxdome's more hitter-friendly confines to sweep Randy, surging into 2nd place.

Game 1 was a back and forth affair in which BC's Champagne Elbow McCullers struck out 14 but (in Cole-like fashion) allowed three homers (Cronenworth,Stanton, and Machado). Jesse "the Neck" Winker's 9th inning bomb gave BC the 6-5 win, with Loup getting a save.

Game 2 featured the cute Kopech getting his first (and possibly only) start of the season; he was irate that he didn't qualify for the win when his manager pulled him after 4 with the score 7-3 BC. A 5-run third was the downfall of FW starter Gausman, as BC went homer (Vlad), double (Perez), double (Winker), homer (Reyes), followed later by Correa's second homer of the game. Perez and A. Garcia also homered in a 15-8 BC win.

Cole bested Scherzer in a Game 3 pitchers' duel. A first-inning homer by Vlad (who entered the series homerless and batting under .100) after Starling Marte's lead-off triple was the only scoring of the game. Both starters went 8, with Cole striking out 12 and Scherzer K-ing 13 in a hard-luck 2-0 loss.

Nick Castellanos's 2-run homer in the third was the key to Bay City's 5-1 win in Game 4, as Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in 7 1/3 and Trea Turner's clutch out with two on in the bottom of the eighth against Leone was the "nail in the coffin" (insert Dead Bay City Player joke here) for Future Wax.

(11/17)  Usually when one team loses a series, some of the reason is due to bad luck.  That
was certainly the case earlier tonight for Harold, and I'm not only referring to the ridiculous
amount of traffic he encountered on the drive from Marblehead to Holliston.  You'd think New Orleans, a team
that plays in a HR 1-19 park should get several ballpark homer chances over the course of a series, but they
had only one ballpark HR chance all series!  Harold also seemingly missed every other split roll as North Dakota
jumped into 2nd place, winning 3 of 4 games.

North Dakota was a mess heading into its home opener, with 2 tired pitchers and 2 injuries - including a 15-game
injury to OF Brett Phillips.  That had nothing to do with deGrom's goving up a 3-run bomb to Riley, causing the
ND manager to callout his dog, Riley, afterwards.  "Bad dog!".  New Orleans went on to win 5-2, running their winning
streak to 5 games.

The two teams were scoreless through 7 innings of game 2.  The Ellis score an unearned run in the 8th on Brandon
Crawford (1e12) error, a single, and an Olson sac fly.  But Walsh's solo shot in the bottom of the 8th ties it 1-1.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, with one out and a man on 3rd, New Orleans brings the infield in.  Pinch-hitter
Alex Dickerson hits a gb+ through the drawn in infield to win the game.

Dickerson is immediately sent back to the minors for the returning Kyle Tucker for game 3.  ND scores an unearned run
in the 2nd (Stallings rbi double), but Robert's rbi double in the 2nd ties it 1-1.  B. Crawford's homer in the 3rd
made it 2-1 ND where it stayed until the 8th when B. Lowe hit a solo shot off Bender for a big insurance run for ND.
Sure enough Austin (bad dog) Riley homers off Liam Hendricks in the top of the 9th to make it 3-2, but Hendricks
settles down and gets the save.

In game 4, Robbie Ray, staked to a 4-0 lead on 3 homers (Crawford, Walsh, Tucker), carried a no-hitter into the
6th inning, when Matt Olson hit New Orleans' only BP homer of the series to make it 4-1.  Gallo's homer makes it 5-1 North
Dakota for the final score.  Ray pitched a complete game 2-hitter.

(11/15):
The New Orleans Ellis swept Oceanus last night at Ellis Field to take over 2nd place.
Computer generated highlights:

In game 1, Austin Meadows cleared the bases with his grand slam as the New Orleans Ellis
beat the Oceanus Assholes by a score of 12 to 6.

Meadows provided much of the offense. He banged out a single bringing in a
run in the 1st inning, hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates
in the 7th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Oceanus was
out-hit by New Orleans, 13 hits to 10.

The winning pitcher was Jake McGee(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 1/3 of an
inning. Walker Buehler(0-1) was charged with the loss. He served up 3
homeruns in his 7 innings.

In game 2, The New Orleans Ellis offense put up 6 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd
inning and bested the Oceanus Assholes by a 7 to 3 score at Doc Ellis
Field.

New Orleans came up with 6 runs in the 3rd inning when they came up with 3
base hits. That early run support was enough for Tyler Glasnow(1-0) and New
Orleans. New Orleans and Oceanus each finished the night with 7 hits.

German Marquez(0-1) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 6
runs in 5 innings.

In game 3, Sandy Alcantara carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the New Orleans
Ellis bested the Oceanus Assholes 8 to 0 at Doc Ellis Field.

Alcantara(1-0) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks
in 9 innings. The right-handed Alcantara had his no-hit bid broken up by
Alex Verdugo who singled with one out in the 6th inning. New Orleans had 14
hits for the night.

Aaron Nola(0-1) was hit with the loss. He struck out 11 batters in 8 innings
despite losing the game. 'He came out with good stuff,' Harold said about
Alcantara. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.’

In the final game, In a close game the New Orleans Ellis got by the Oceanus Assholes by the score
of 9 to 7.

New Orleans jumped on top of Oceanus in the 7th inning as they scored 2 runs
on 2 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Matt Olson who excited
the crowd when he clubbed a two-run home run. Oceanus threatened in the 9th
but New Orleans was able to put down the rally.

Blake Treinen(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Kenley
Jansen earned the save, his 1st. The loss was charged to Garrett
Whitlock(0-1) in relief.

New Orleans manager comments: in the 1-19 HR (and singles) park, 18 HR’s were hit combined by both teams. And Jed had the early lead in 3 of the 4 games.

(11/13):
The surprising first place Dead Nettles won 3 of 4 again today.

What a strange series at Eric's (thanks, Tom, for making the journey). Tom missed at least 6 ballpark homers (to Eric's 2) and perhaps a dozen BP singles (to Eric's few), and simply got out-rolled, as the Dead Nettles took 3 or 4. The Manatees' extreme ballpark produced this crazy stat: The Nettles outhitting CN 48 to 25. Nuts. Game 3 was the closest contest, both teams having split two. Knotted 3-3 after 10, the Nettles erupted for 4 in the 11th, the big shot a 2-run blast from Bogaerts, to take the game 7-4. Hader got the dominant win in relief, going 2 and fanning 5. No question the splits went DN's way almost the entire series. Tom was, of course, gracious to the end. Star of the series: DN's bullpen.

(11/6) Arnie may find the Dead Nettles laughable--and likely remains confident they'll finish dead last--but they got the jump on New Orleans, taking 3 of 4 to start the season. DN coaches were quick to point out that the rolls and splits went favorably their way, and warned the fan base to chill. DN's staff (mostly the starters) gave up 18 walks but surrendered only 23 hits and 9 runs, which tells you that Harold was just not getting the love of the dice. Shit'll even out. Hitting stars for Eric include Arenado, with 2 homers, a triple and 6 ribbies; and last year's numero uno pick Wander Franco, who hit a walk-off blast against Clase to win game 3, 2-1. The bullpen was impressive, surrendering just one run in 14 innings...North Dakota carried  a comfy 6-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th in game 4 for a split. After Yaz's 3-run homer with one out off Hendricks it was 6-5. 2 errors and a single later, the beses are loaded with 2 out and Schwarber up against Sewald. But Sewald strikes him out to salvage the split.
