Twits Notes: World Series (March 22 at Marblehead)

When I bumped into Randy in Canton at a show (Mil-Ten Plays), Randy would not wish me luck over Harold, stating he was a neutral third party.  But Sam wished me luck and I knew Jed was pulling for CN) due to a trade potentially netting him an extra first rounder.  BTW, I am going to the Washington Street Players “The Curious Savage” (which Randy is in) Saturday April 25th. (Ed note: The Commissioner is also in a play in Ashland, “The Caterpillar” April 9-11, telling the story of meeting Robin and playing Strat-O on our first date, among other things)

This was a back and forth hard fought series going 7 games with game 7 going 14 innings and the winning run scoring on a tired strikeout.  (CN believes that * starters should be unlimited in the playoffs!)

HR (New Orleans):    Harris (1,2)
HR (CN Manatees):    Gurriel (1), Raleigh (1)

CN’s right-handed bats took advantage of the cozy Cajun confines for 2 ballpark homers in the 2nd to go up 3-0.  Willy Harris answered in the bottom of the inning with a 2 run homer on a 1-7 or out roll.  Swanson drove Jose Ramirez home in the 3rd for CN and 2 runners were left on 2nd and 3rd after he stole second and Santander could not come through in the clutch.

Both pitchers settled in and Lugo was masterful only leaving after 8 with a 4-2 lead.  Judge and Rooker started the 9th with 2 quick outs but Marsh got a ballpark single to extend the inning (1-12) and then Willy Harris came up again and got the same 1-7 HR or game over roll and knocked it out to tie the game.  A walk and then a C-x and the Gold Glover Raleigh allowed a wild pitch on a 1, and then 2 short singles and a walk later, and NO steals game 1, 5-4 and it was looking bleak for CN.

SV:        Chapman (1)

HR (New Orleans):   Rooker (1), Riley (1), Harris (3)
HR (CN Manatees):  Ohtani (1,2)

Ohtani started the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st and Rooker answered back with a ballpark homer in the bottom of the 1st.  CN loaded the bases in the second but could only push one across.  Ohtani led off the 3rd with a 2nd solo shot and led off the 5th with a ball park homer (HR 1-12, roll 16).  NO’s Riley came up in the bottom of the 5th and hit a 2 run ballpark shot to tie the game.  Harper and Donovan answered with a double a piece to give CN a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the 6th

Ohtani led off (which he did 4 times in this game) the 7th with a  triple but was thrown out at home on a ground ball in the drawn in infield.  2 quick strikeouts in the 9th and CN was hoping for a 1-1 series tie coming home.  But Harris once again hit his 1-7 BP HR chance to tie the game at 4-4.

Extra innings and Harper leads off with Swanson as the ghost runner at 2nd.  Clase had a prop bet that he could throw a ball to Harper, but he hit it for a long single and CN is up 5-4.  3 quick outs later and it’s the bottom of the 10th. CN has to hold on and they get Judge to strike out with Profar standing at 2nd and then it comes down to 2 outs with Bailey at the plate and Chapman on the mound and strike 3.  CN does go back home with a 1-1 series lead just happy to be coming home.

New Orleans struck early and knocked CN down 2 games to 1 after the first game in CN’s quaint band box.  Gil gave up 4 walks in the 2nd and was tired quickly while only allowing one hit a double out of the infield.  Patrick Bailey was the star of this game as he rolled only in his 2 column and had 2 RBIs and a stolen base (a 2/20 man).

HR (New Orleans):                Profar (1), Judge (1)
HR (CN Manatees):              Santander (1,2), Harper (1), Raleigh (3)

Harold, sensing weakness scored 3 quick runs off of Lugo punctuated by a Walner triple.  But CN showed resilience as Ohtani answered with a 2-run ballpark bomb and Santander singled in a third run to settle the game back into a neutral tie. Santander came to the plate in the 3rd and hit his own ballpark bomb to plate Seager and give CN a 5-3 lead.  Lugo looked dominant again striking out 13 and taking the lead into the 8tt .

Lugo got the first two batters out, but it was not to be as he then allowed 3 runs on a ballpark single and 2 ballpark homers (one by Judge 1-10) and New Orleans looked to take the commanding 3-1 series lead with a 6-5 victory. However, it was not to be, as CN led off their part of the 8th with 3 straight solo homeruns (1 a ballpark shot for Harper) on the way to scoring 4 and then held on to that lead to knot the series at 2 games a piece.

There was a pizza interlude and then the action continued with a battle of the lefties.

HR (New Orleans):   Olson (1)
HR (CN Manatees):  Raleigh (4)

CN scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st off of Sale on a 2-RBI Harper double.  Not to be undone, Olson hit a ballpark 2 run homer to tie the game in the top of the 2nd.  The offenses went quiet and New Orleans loaded the bases with no outs in the 6th and the pinch hitting Rooker was able to get a run across but that was all.  Once again it was Raleigh who hit a leadoff homerun to tie the game at 3-3 after 8.

New Orleans looked poised to take the lead after Seager gave up a 2-base error (3 ones on the error dice) getting men to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  But Slaten was up to the job and got 2 outs to keep the tie going into the bottom of the 9th.  Jose Ramirez made the first out, but Ohtani worked a walk versus Yarbough and then Harper hit a ballpark single to get men on 1st and 2nd with one out.  Ohtani led a double steal and Harold had had enough of game 4 hero pinch-hitter Santander whom he promptly walked to load the bases to face Seager.  Seager hit a walk off 2-run single and CN was leaving Florida with a 3 games to 2 lead.

W:  Steele (1)
L:    Blanco (1)

HR (New Orleans):    Rooker (2,3), Riley (2)
HR (CN Manatees):   Duran (1), Raleigh (5), Seager (1)

Game 7: Both sides exhausted, and pitchers have the limited innings they have, and CN is complaining that  starred starters should be unlimited.

New Orleans starts the scoring on a Judge double and a Rooker BP homer.  CN comes back right away with 2 solo shots by Duran (ballpark homer 1-12) and Raliegh.  Judge hits a rbi single in the 3rd to give Harold a lead and Riley after a Cx error hits a ballpark shot to give New Orleans an early 4-2 lead.

Seager leads off the 6th with a home run and Trout hits a triple (maybe his last World Series hit) and is driven in by Duran to tie the game at 4-4.  Ohtani walks to lead off the 8th.  Jose Ramirez singles and attempts to steal 2nd and the throw sails into the outfield and Ohtani scores the go ahead run.  J Ram is thrown out at home when Ramos hits a hot shot with infield in.  New Orleans comes right back with a solo ballpark homer from Rooker and it is again tied this time at 5, after 8 full innings.

Both teams grind through their bullpens and both cannot get the timely hit.  Steele is in with his final starter innings to try and just hold on as Harold is finally forced to use tired starters from earlier games.  Trout bat has fallen off and Doyle his replacement in CF is the ghost runner in the 14th inning.  Blanco, the tired game 4 starter and best he has against lefty hitters comes in to face Duran, Harper and Raleigh.  Duran hits a LFx for an out and Harper strikes out…but wait it is a tired strike out and the long single scores Doyle.  Blanco gets Raleigh and Donovan and now CN must hold New Orleans for the final half inning.

Rojas is the ghost runner and Stallings works a walk.  Semien hits into a double play, so now it is 2 outs man on third and the pitch hitter, the mighty lefty Schwarber, comes to the plate.  And like the mighty Casey poem of yore, when the smoke and dust clears it is the 3rd out and CN has recaptured the World Series and Jed is jumping for joy as he now has an extra first round pick.

This was a great series, it could have gone either way.  Games for the most part were not decided until late and even the 2-0 shutout and 7-4 blowout had missed ballpark homers and chances that could have decided the games.  And not over-using relievers set up a game 7 for the history books.

Raleigh, who’s card will be even better next year, hit 5 home runs - almost always when they were needed, so he gets the nod as MVP.  Seth Lugo, who pitched into the 8th in both his early starts, could have been the MVP if CN had not fumbled his games. Harold’s Will Harris had 3 homers in the first 2 games and Rooker also had 3 homers and with a little less timely hitting by CN, the New Orleans bullpen might have been the story.

.....
Fun series to play.  By the time we got to the 12th inning of game 7, it pretty much came down to if I got the role I would win, and if Tom got the role he would win.  Tom got the role.

And once again, just like in real life, Judge came up short, hitting only one Home run the entire series.  When Michael Harris is your series HR leader, I’m amazed I got it to a game 7.

Harold

Playoffs: New Orleans vs. Future Wax (March 8 at Holliston)

Down 3-1 in the series, New Orleans staged an epic comeback including a furious 9th inning comeback in game 6 to beat Future Wax 4-3.

Game1:  Wax 2 – NO 1.  Houck out dueled Wheeler in game one.  NO had a chance to pull even or take the lead in the 8th when Judge was thrown out at the plate (1-15 safe, rolled 18) and Wallner missed a grand slam BPHR (1-6). Machado’s 2 run HR in the 7th was the difference.

Game 2: NO 6 – Wax 3.  Wax takes early lead in the 1st on the O’Neil HR, but NO ties it next inning on the Bailey sac fly.  NO scores 5 in the 5th stringing together 4 singles a double and a triple, making it 6-1.  Wax makes it close scoring 2 in the 9th on Walker’s HR.  Sale with the win, Gausman the loss.

Game 3: Wax 4 – NO 3.  NO was hoping for some home cooking but it was not to be.  Olson hits NO’s first HR of the series, a 2 run shot in the 2nd to give NO the early lead.  But Adames and Pederson both hit 2 run HR’s in the 3rd to give Wax a 4-2 lead.  NO adds a run in the 5th on the Rojas double and Rooker triple to make it 4-3.  Then we come to the bottom of the 9th, 4-3 Wax.  Pinch hitter Wallner grounds out. Then pinch hitter Stallings singles, pinch hitter Kim singles and Profar walks.  Based loaded, 1 out.  Judge up.  And he hits into a game ending DP.  Wax up 2-1 in series.  The NO manager is getting bad vibes on how this is going.

Game 4: Wax 2 – NO 0.  Cowser leads off the game reaching on an error and Adames hits a 2 run HR.  And that was the scoring for the game for both teams.  Bax was brilliant through 5 for Wax, and 4 relivers shut down NO’s bats at home.  Wax up 3-1 in the series.  The NO manager is now planning for the draft in his mind.

Game 5: NO 9 – Wax 4.  Wax scores 1 in the 1st on the Pederson HR and 3 off Wheeler in the 2nd on a single, HBP, BB,BB and BB.  Wax up 4-0 after 2 looking close it out.  But some small signs of life – Rooker hits only the 2nd HR for NO in the series, a 3 run shot in the 3rd to pull within 1 run, 4-3. Judge come up in the 5th and finally hits his first HR of the series to tie the game.  NO takes the lead on the Rooker single and Wallner double and Riley single scoring 2.  Judge pads the lead with a 3 run HR in the 8th and NO wins.  Wax still up 3-2 in the series and looking to close it out at home.

Game 6: NO 10 – Wax 5.  The turning point.  Wax takes an early 2-0 lead and tacks on 3 more in the 5th on Walker’s HR. 5-0 Wax after 5.  NO scores a run making it 5-1 after 6.  NO scores 2 more runs in the 8th on a Rojas single and Stallings single plus two base error (I think it was by Arozarena).  An Edwards ground out scores Stallings but the inning ends, Wax 5 NO 3 after 8.  The 9th inning: Wallner leads off with a single, Riley singles him to second. Marsh strikes out, 1 out. Rojas up, singles, 1 run in 5-4 Wax, runners on the corners. Stallings walks, based loaded. Edwards hits a double scoring 2 and NO takes the lead 6-5.  Then the flood gates opened, a BB and 3 singles later, NO scores 7 in the inning, going from down 5-0 after 5 to up 10-5 after 8 ½.  The Wax Manager is stunned.  The NO manager is stunned.  The Commissioner watching is stunned.  Wax goes 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th and the series is tied 3-3.

Game 7: NO 3 – Wax 1.  Both managers try to piece together a pitching plan with both bullpens taxed and many arms already fallen off.  Wax is forced to start Imanaga, and Rooker jumps on him on the top of the 1st hitting a 2 run HR to give NO the early lead.  Machado hits a solo shot in the 2nd, 2-1 NO.  That score holds until the 8th when NO gets a big insurance run on the Marsh double and Bailey single.  The NO pitching was brilliant, not allowing a hit after the 3rd inning, as Williams closes it out, 3-1 final.

Playoffs: Constantinople vs. North Dakota (at Holliston March 8)

So as I (Tom) left to visit Holliston I headed toward I495 North by getting on I95 South.  As I approached the exit a car came up on my left at very high speed and cut me off and slammed on its brakes to drop 30 mph to make the exit.  The car behind me honked as I hit my brakes (to drop 30 mph as well) and it went around me on the right (breakdown lane).  I caught my breath without getting road rage and pulled into the middle lane and accelerated.  It took me 5 minutes to realize that when all the excitement happened that I had not made the turn onto the exit.  I turned around and headed back up I95 North now to I495 N.  I got on I495 now late.  I entered that state of driving over 75 on I495 and thinking about the upcoming series and when I got off the exit, I was only 10-15 minutes late and I texted my apologies.  I still did make it before Randy…😉

Jose Ramirez pinch ran for Devers and stole 2nd and 3rd with no outs and the infield was in and 3 batters later it was 6-1.  Lugo went 8 innings giving up a ballpark homer to Lowe with no one on in the 8th and then Steele came on to get 3 Ks in the 9th and CN was up 1-0.

After an outburst and then a team meeting, the Slugs went up 3-0 as Lindor walked, Merrill hit a short double, and then Butler hit a sac fly.  Lowe hit his 3rd homer of the series, driving in 2 runs, and it was 3-0.  This was all CN’s day as the Manatees came out in the bottom of the first to tire Hunter Brown.  Ohtani walked, stole a base, and ended up on 3rd as the ball sailed into center.  Devers drove him in, and Seager hit a LFx for a short double and then Harper hit an open double to clear the bases.  Duran homered to drive him in, and 2 outs later it was 5-3.  Merrill (who led the SOMBILLA in triples) tripled in a run in the 2nd and it was 5-4.  In the bottom of the 3rd the first two batters were walked by Brown and he left the game as R. Lopez came in to stem the bleeding, but he was welcomed with another walk, K, and then ballpark single and K, which put the game at 6-4 with the bases loaded and 2 outs and Fernando Tatis at bat.  He is -10 in the clutch but a good defensive OF and he hit a bases clearing double and was stranded at 3rd as Ohtani walked and stole a base only to have Devers hit into the 3rd out.  In the 4th, the ballpark paid off for CN as Duran hit a 2 out ballpark single and Raleigh followed with a 2 run ballpark homerun.  It was 11-4 and that was all the scoring, as both sides finished the game with little offensive flair.

The Sea Slugs took a 1-0 lead as Tucker collected his second hit and came around to score on a Willson Contreras Ballpark Single.  CN answered in the 4th with back to back solo shots for Devers and Seager, and then Raleigh hit a 2 run ballpark homer.  In the 5th after a double play, Ohtani hit a triple and Jose Ramirez followed with a ballpark single that scored him for a 5-1 lead.  Tucker hit a 2 run shot in the 6th, but ND once again left 2 men on after 6 and the game was 5-3 and close again.  Santander hit a clean shot and gave CN a 6-3 lead that they would hold onto as ND had 6 K and 1 BB  over the last 3 innings to end their season. CN had 14 Ks to hold ND in check.

This unlikely sweep was a team effort with 8 players hitting .300 or better, no one player scoring more than 4 runs (Harper). Tatis had 5 RBI and Raleigh had 2 homers and 4 RBI and  10 Ks.  Ohtani hit .125/.260/.444 with a triple, homer, 3 RBI and 2 SBs.

Chapman had 2 Saves and 8 Ks and Lugo had 2 wins with a 3.29 ERA and 15 Ks.  (CN pitchers recorded 46 Ks in 36 innings.)

CN was 4 for 6 on Ballpark Homer chances (missing 1 of each type) and ND was 2 for 3, missing 1 right handed chance (1-10).

CN left 27 men on base with 15 in scoring position.
ND left 35 men on base with 16 in scoring position.

CN out homered ND 9 to 5, which made the difference in the series. (Arnie adds, several of my homers were useless late inning homers in already decided games. During the season many of those baserunners [yes 35 LOB in 4 games] would be plated by a big bomb from all my great HR hitting lefties. That did not happen today)

Basically, both teams had a little luck in places but ND could not get the clutch hit when needed or get the unlikely hit when a reliever came in with a good matchup.  When he did counter with a pinch hitter (usually due to having 5 or 6 limited players in the lineup and sometimes a worse matchup then he had originally) for the most part that did not end up getting the big hit, and as a result CN’s pitching looked so much better than it did during the season.

Madaket (Eric) Begins Strong but falters allowing CN into the playoffs

Lugo Starts game 1 for CN and hoped to punch their ticket into the playoffs. He was given a 1-0 lead after 5 innings. In the 6th, he gave up a BB, homerun, out and BP homer to get tired, down 3-1.  With all CN's recent extra inning games, he stayed in and allowed another homer, walk and ball park single to get out of the inning down 5-1.  CN had left men on 3rd twice already and scared Eric a little bit by back to back clean homers from Devers and Seager to whittle the lead down to 5-3. Lugo kept going tired until Chapman came in the 9th to give up 5 runs with complete ineffectiveness.  Final score 10-3 and Eric was still alove, needing to win 3 more for his own playoff run.

Game 2 started out differently as CN got a cheap run early off of Skubal when Gurriel ended up on 2nd due to a 2 base error by Bellinger and then Soto made a catch in RF, and on a rare play Gurriel came round to score as Soto was dazed after hitting the wall. So the 3rd begins for CN with a Doyle single and then Eric hits Ohtani, bringing up the lefty killer Ramos.  A catcher X for the 3 catcher (Bart) results and he makes the foul out catch.  Then Jose Ramirez hit a second catcher X and a 13 is rolled and it should have been a passed ball but the computer called it a pop out. Tried to undo the play and steal 3rd.  Failed.  Saved the game. Did multiple things to get the saved game with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and Jose at bat.  But we could not get it to let us continue as multiplayer. So Eric let me just play the game out playing for both sides and announcing the results…  Ramirez hits an out advancing the runners to give CN a 2-0 lead. Kiner-F came up for Eric to start the 5th and tripled and was driven in by Soto to get the game to 2-1. CN's Suarez started the 6th and gave up a double, ballpark single (1-10 on a 6) and a walk to become tired immediately leaving the bases loaded for Bido. MK's Turang then squoze and Ozuna scored (1-12 with the throw coming into home from Bido) and the game was all tied up. But Will Smith hit a homer in the 7th to give CN a 3-2 lead.  Then in the 8th Jose Ramirez scored on a double by Harper and Tatis was thrown out at home (Great blocking of the plate by Adley) and with a strike out the game was 4-2, CN.  Williams game in for a 2 out save to clinch a playoff spot for the CN Manatees.

Game 3: CN feeling relaxed, tired out Flaherty early as multiplayer play resumed and CN scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Donovan added 2 more runs on a ballpark homer in the 3rd and Eric went into the pen to start the 4th inning. Soto hit into a double play to score a run with bases loaded and no outs, and in the 6th Ozuna hit a solo shot to bring the game to 7-2.  Jose Ramirez hit a 2 run ball park homer (1-10) off of Tanner Scott to get CN up 9-2.  Santana pitched the final 2 innings as was awarded the win by the computer.

Game 4: This one was hard fought and was only important to allow for CN to have a winning record going into the post season. Ragans (CN) gave up an early homer from Neto go down 1-0 but Gurrielhit a BP HR (1-10) off Crochet to tie it 1-1. Eric began the 6th with an out single, walk and double to tire Ragans.  Bido come in again to save the day for CN but gave up a walk to Alvarez and a single to the pinch hitting Bart that gave Eric and Crochet a 4-1 lead.  Devers hit a 2 run homer off of Yates to get the game to 4-3.  Gaddis (Eric’s best reliever) tried to hold onto the lead and successfully got out of the 7th as Ohtani hit a clutch out to end the inning.  But Gaddis was tagged with 2 runs in the 8th as Duran hit a ball park single, Harper singled and then Santander hit a ballpark single. He then struck out Swanson, despite being tired for the 2nd out.  But with the game tied, Tinoco came in and Raleigh hit a RFx and Soto could not make the play and CN went up 5-4.  Santana went 2 and 1/3 (his arm fell off at that point) and then Williams came in to save Santana’s win.

(2/28)
Randy clinched 2nd place today, beating Oceanus 3 games to 1. In its series, North Dakota was actually rooting for Bay City, but had a ridiculous amount of luck (4 timely righty BP HR's at 1-4) to finish the season 17-3. Today's results mean that Harold has clinched 3rd place.

Tom's magic number is 1. If Eric sweeps, he finishes in 4th place. Otherwise, Tom finishes in 4th place. If Tom sweeps, he ends up at 30-26, same record as Harold. But Harold won 5 of the 8 games for the 3rd place tiebreaker.

...

The tone was set in the 4th inning of the first game. It was 1-1 when Sea Slug Isaac Paredes cracked a 2-run homer off Burnes to make it 3-1. An inning later, it was 4-1 and Paredes came up with the bases loaded and two out. He rolls a 4 on a BP HR (1-4) for the grand slam to make it 9-1. Robin does not give up and a 3-run HR by mutant L. Acuna and 2-run homer by limited Laureano make it 9-6. But Fairbanks, Puk ('the human stain') and Munoz pitch shutout ball the rest of the way, final score 12-6 in this pitchers' park.

Robin's great Paul Skenes takes a 1-0 shutout into the 8th inning of game 2, matched closely by Ober.
ND's Betts hits a solo shot to make it 1-1. In the 9th, pinch-hitter Rob Refsnyder hits a BP homer (1-4) off the lefty Vesia. He rolls a 4 to make it 2-1. Mason Miller pitches a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th for the ND win.

Game 3 featured another ridiculous ND BP HR to win the game and Robin missing a 1-16 HR that could have tied it. She's up 6-4 in the 7th thanks to Sal's and Vlad's 2-run homers. ND has men at 2nd and 3rd none out and Derek Hill has to bat against Uceta, Robin's best reliever--a bad match up. He surprises Robin with a squeeze attempt but it goes to a 1 and 2 count and the squeeze is taken off. Hill rolls a 1-4 BP HR and, you guessed it, rolls a 4 for the 3-run homer to take the lead 7-6. Bottom of the 9th, one out, Vlad rolls a 20 on a HR 1-16 and is out. Final score 7-6, ND, Munoz with the save.

ND jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first on Willson Contreras's roll of a 4 BP HR. (That's 4 in four games, playing with Robin's dice.) Carroll scores the next two runs for BC and it's 3-2 after 6. But Miller and Munoz pitch hitless relief for the Sea Slugs for the sweep and franchise record tying 36th victory. (In researching this question, I discovered that my team name in '09-10 was The Flaming Earthworms.)

...

Future Wax needed 2 wins to ensure a play off spot. Oceanus needed 3 wins to have a chance to play-in to a spot. Oceanus took the first game 6-3, powered by a Lowe homer and a stellar outing by Hunter Greene (7 IP, 5 H, 3 W). Payamps got the save.
FW took the next game 4-1, as Houck outdueled Cease.
The 3rd game went to extra innings, after FW rallied late to knot the score 4-4. In the bottom of the 10th, with the ghost runner bunted to third, Pederson was intentionally walked. Walker put the next pitch into the bleachers for a 3-run walk-off win – securing a playoff berth for a FW squad nobody picked to make the post-season.
Baz out-dueled Pepiot in the final game, with FW winning 4-0 despite having only 5 hits.

Draft Day, Saturday, March 28.

Harold took the trip to Plymouth to play Eric in what turned out to be fun, satisfying split for both teams.

Scores:

Game 1: MK 5-4

Game 2: MK 5-1

Game 3 NO 5-4 (11 innings)

Game 4: NO 2-1 (10 innings)

Of note, there were 6 injuries, 4 for NO and 2 for MK. The two injuries for MK were to Rutschman, who was plunked in game 1 and had to sit out the remainder of the game, then got plunked again in game 2, and was out for the rest of the series. Harold lost 4 different players.

Game 3 was the pivotal game, with Harold about to lose the first 3 games when tough-luck Judge (he’d missed about 3 or 4 BPs at that point) launched a 2-out, 2-run shot (rolled a 3 on a HR 1-3) in the 8th to give NO a one-run lead. Though MK tied it the bottom of the inning, NO won in 11 when Jimenez walked all 3 batters he faced to force in the winning run. In that game, MK this 3 triples to lead off innings, and all 3 scored.

All teams have played 52 games and get a day off before their final series thanks to Eric's new rule we passed at last year's annual meeting...Draft Day Saturday, March 28.

(2/21) The Mantatees struggled up north on Saturday losing 3 of 4 at Icewind Dale Park in Neverwinter. tightening up the playoff race, with three teams within a game of each other for 4th place.  The CN bats appears to be in cold storage until game 4.

Game 1:  Neverwinter 2 - 1

A real pitching dual between T. Miller and Lugo.  Neverwinter opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd with a two run ball park homer by Yaz (only ball-park homer in the series). Constantinople answered with a solo run in the top of the 4th.  Harper and Santander both walked to start the inning, but Raleigh hit into a double play.  Donovan then singled in Harper.  That was all the scoring for game 1.  Miller notched the win, Iglesias got the save.  Lugo was the tough luck loser.

Game 2:  Neverwinter 1 - 0

In another low scoring game, Neverwinter scores the only run of the game in the 8th inning and wins 1 - 0. Fedde pitched 8 strong innings, striking out 12 Mantatees allowing three hits en-route to his best outing of the season in the win.  Iglesias got his second save of the series, recording two more strikeouts in a perfect 9th for Neverwinter. Jake McCarthy led off the 8th with a single and stole 2nd .  Austin Wells drove him in with a single.  Neverwinter also only had three hits in the game.  Gavin Stone only allowed only one hit in five innings in a no decision, Brasier took the loss.

Game 3:  Neverwinter 5 - 0

Finally some offense as Neverwinter put up a five spot in the shutout.  Ahmed Rosario hit a two-run homer in the 3rd inning, Freddie Freeman doubled in JT Realmuto, Acuna hit a short single followed by a sac fly by Jake Myers plating two more in the 4th .  Michael Comforto hit a solo shot in the 5th accounting for all the scoring in game 5.  Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two hits.  Steele took the loss, surrendering 11 hits with the 5 earned runs.

Game 4:  Constantinople 6 - 5 in 10 innings

The Mantatee bats finally came to life in game 4.  Duran and Otani led off with singles in the top of the 1st inning, Harper walked and Devers drove in two with a long single.  Donavan and Tatis hit solo homers off Alpaca starter Woods-Richardson giving them a 4-0 lead.  He then settled down allowing only one more hit through seven.  Neverwinter pecked away at the lead, scoring one run in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 7th, tying up the game.  With ghost runner Fernando Tatis Jr. on second, Jared Duran hits a two run bomb off Iglesias in the top of the 10th.  A comeback just falls short for Neverwinter, JT Realmuto drives in ghost runner Jake Burger, but Brasier closes it out preventing the sweep.

Many Ballpark homers came up short in this game for both teams.

Ahmed Rosario was the offensive star for Neverwinter, going 4 for 7, with 2 homers and 3 rbis.

(2/20)
It's the Sea Slugs against the Sea Robins! North Dakota, winners of 13 of their last 16 games, closed out a 9-3 homestand winning 3 of 4 over a frustrated Makaket in Plymouth. The Bioluminescent Sea Slugs won two blowouts and split two close games in this rare Friday SOMBILLA match-up.

Game 1 began ominously for Madaket when Kyle Tucker robbed Juan Soto of a homer on the very first pitch. It was ND's first successful HR rob of the season. The game ended up 9-1 laugher as the Sea Slugs tired out Gilbert with 6 runs in the 3rd on a homer by Lindor, 3-run shot by Butler and a solo shot by mutant Pavin Smith. Jackson Merrill (2-run homer) and Betts (solo) made it 5 home runs from 5 different players. Gilbert took it for the team surrendering 4 tired singles. Reynaldo Lopez (4-2) pitched a CG 8-hitter for the win.

ND went up 2-0 in game 2, Ober pitching a 1-hitter through 6 innings. The Sea Robins' Ozuna homered to make it 2-1 in the 7th and Turang homers off Kenley Jansen to tie it in the 8th. Top of the 9th, Ozuna's 2nd HR of the game, this one off Estrada, gives Madaket the 3-2 lead and Gaddis pitches a 1-2-3 9th for the save to tie the series. Yates, Jiminez, Kelly and Gaddis shut down ND on 2 hits over the final 4 1/3 innings.

MK jumps in front in the first inning of game 3 on Ozuna's rbi double, but a Butler double followed by LF Yordan Alvarez (5e3) misplay of a Tucker fly turns into a double and 2-base error giving ND the 2-1 lead. A Tucker 2-run homer off MK's Flaherty makes it a 4-1 game in the 4th. 3 singles, a walk, and a sac fly score two for the MK Sea Robins in the 5th to make it 4-3. Eric loads the bases with one out in the 6th but ND's Mason Miller comes in and strikes out Bart and Soto. A solo shot by ND's Horwitz makes it 5-3 and Estrada pitches the final two innings for his 4th save.

Game 4 was all Kyle Tucker. He had 3 homers and 7 rbi to lead ND to a 9-2 rout. He thought he had a 4th homer. In the 2nd inning, he appeared to roll a BP homer off Skubal but two innings later it was determined that the stoned ND manager was looking on the wrong side of the card and Tucker should only had had a single. Since 3 outs followed that play in 2nd inning, Eric suggested we just make the HR a single (from the correct side of Tucker's card) wiping a run off the scoreboard retroactively. But it didn't matter as Tucker was unstoppable after that.

Star of the series was Kyle Tucker 10 for 13 (.769), 6 R, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 2 SB. In last week's Twits Notes I forgot to name Tucker as the star of the week of that series against Sam. But in the last 8 games, Tucker is 15 for 24 (.625), 6 HR, 17 RBI

Draft Day, Saturday March 28.

(2/19) Just when the Oceanus Assholes were resigned to another draft lottery they took 3 out of 4 from visiting Madaket.  Now Oceanus is resigned to another draft lottery but with fewer things.  There were 3 and a half close games, including an extra inning affair.  Lots of lead changes.

Mark Vientos was the hitting star for Oceanus, batting .583 with 2 doubles and 2 homers.  Jose Altuve made his first appearance of the season in possibly his final season as an Asshole and hit.364 with a homer.  For Madaket, Juan Soto hit .313 with 3 doubles and Zach Neto had 2 homers.

Here are the slightly edited computer generated game summaries:

Game 1

In a close game it was the Madaket Sea Robins 5, the Oceanus Assholes 3 in 10 innings at the Rehoboth Parking Lot. Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings.  Madaket was up 3-0 after 3 innings thanks to a bunch of singles.  Oceanus tied the game in the bottom of the 5th on a Mark Vientos 3-run shot. Madaket ended up winning it in the 10th inning.  Brice Turang kicked off the action when he
laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Juan Soto was next and he hit a deep fly bringing in a run.  Adley Rutschman then doubled.  Yordan Alvarez followed and he laced a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning.  Madaket had 7 hits for the game and Oceanus had 3. Kirby Yates got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Hunter Gaddis gained credit for the save.  Tyler Holton was the loser in relief.

Game 2

Daniel Hudson delivered 3 solid innings at the Rehoboth Parking Lot as the Oceanus Assholes won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Madaket Sea Robins by the count of 3 to 2. Oceanus erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs.  Alejandro Kirk got things going when he drew a walk.  Ryan McMahon was the next batter, but he struck out.  One out later, Nico Hoerner then reached on an error.  Bryan Hudson then uncorked a wild one that found its way to the backstop plating a run.  Nathaniel Lowe came up to bat and lined a one-base hit making Oceanus the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.  Oceanus totaled 7 hits on the afternoon. Chris Martin was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. (Bryan) Hudson ended up with the loss in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Game 3

In a two run game the Oceanus Assholes got by the Madaket Sea Robins by the score of 6 to 4. Oceanus scored 3 runs in the decisive 7th inning with the help of 4 hits.  The big moment was provided by Jose Altuve who brought a roar from the partisan Rehoboth Parking Lot fans when he cracked a two-run shot.  It was a roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times.  Joel Payamps went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Tyler Holton gained credit for the save.  Tanner Scott was charged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Game 4

In a lop-sided win the Oceanus Assholes ripped the Madaket Sea Robins by a 10 to 5 count. It was close for the first half of the game, with the lead changing 5 times in the first 4 innings. But in the bottom of the 5th inning Oceanus scored 4 runs when they had 5 base hits.  They would be enough to earn the win. Ryan Pepiot went 7 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Framber Valdez was the losing pitcher.  Valdez may have set a record for most runs allowed without getting tired.  He allowed 10 earned runs on 15 hits (including 3 homers) and 4 walks in 8 innings.

Draft Day, Saturday March 28

(2/18)
It was a satisfying split for Bay City, who returned home after a 16-game road trip to face the Alpacas. (It was not so satisfying for BayCity's fading playoff hopes, however.)

Game 1 was a pitchers' duel between NW's Wacha and BC's Burnes. All three runs in Neverwinter's 2-1 victory came via solo homers: NW's Westburg (a constant thorn in the side of the Rollers the whole series) and Bregman and BC's Carroll. All runs came in the sixth inning.

Game 2 started with a similar lack of hitting by both teams, but Neverwinter jumped on top to stay in the 6th inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits.  Again, neither team was able to score until the 6th inning. Jordan Westburg hit 3 doubles as the Neverwinter Alpacas topped the Bay City Rollers by a score of 5 to 2. The win was credited to Simeon Woods-Richards, who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Ryan Walker  earned the save. Yu Darvish was the loser in what was likely his final SOMBILLA appearance.

The Bay City bats finally came alive in Game 3 (again in the sixth inning), as the Rollers shut out the Alpacas 6-0 on the combined efforts of Cole, Vesia, Uceta, and Robertson. Carroll homered and Witt and Teoscar tripled. Fedde took the loss.

Game 4 was a nail-biter in which, surprisingly, neither team waited for the sixth inning to score. Corbin Carroll collected 2 extra-base hits as the Bay City Rollers defeated the Neverwinter Alpacas by a score of 3 to 2. Bay City rapped out 9 hits for the night, but NW's Realmuto had the only homer of the game. Porter Hodge went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Michael Kopech recorded the save.  Nathan Eovaldi took the loss.

Star of the series for BC was Corbin Carroll, who with no regard for his impending hamate issue, hit .538 with a double, a triple, and 2 homers with 4 RBIs. Special shout-out to captain Sal Perez, who beat out a couple of infield hits against a stunned Gunner Henderson and walked twice in the series.

(2/17) FW continued its late season rally, taking 3 of 4 from New Orleans, a week after doing the same to Constantinople, and moving into third place.

The first game was a pitching duel between NO's Wheeler and FW's Houck, scoreless until the bottom of the 8th. FW loaded the bases, Harold brought in the lefty Yarbrough, and Randy countered lefty-killer O'Neill, whose bases clearing double accounted for all runs scored in FW's 3-0 win.

FW's Yamamoto outdueled Sonny Gray in the second game. NO scored first, but Turner's pinch-hit homer tied it 1-1 in the 5th. Machado singled in the eventual winning run in the 6th. Duran and Strahm held NO scoreless over the final 3 innings, for a 2-1 victory.

The Ellis's Aaron Judge bashed a 2-run homer in the 1st inning of game 3, but Imanaga recovered and gave up no more runs. FW exploded in the 5th with 5 runs on a Cowser 2-run shot, and RBI doubles from Walker and Machado. NO scored again but it was too little too late. Final score 5-3 for FW.

NO final found its offensive rhythm in the final game, scoring 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 5 in the 6th featuring homers by Judge and Rooker. Final score 8-4 to deny FW the sweep.

(2/14) The Bioluminscent Sea Slugs opened up a 2 game lead over Harold with a hard fought series win against the plucky Alpacas. I could easily complain about missing two BP homers (1-18) in my only loss, including a roll of 20 on Kyle Tucker's potential game-tying 3-run homer in the 9th, or the fact that Jed's nonfunctioning 'robbing HR rule' has no infected my computer Strat-O, but I won't.

Slightly edited computer wrtieups:

Game 1: One run was the difference at Gackle Park as the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs defeated the Neverwinter Alpacas 3 to 2.
Hunter Brown(4-1) gave North Dakota a solid outing. He went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 7 hits and no walks. Brown got help from Mason Miller who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 5th save. Luke Weaver (0-3) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1
walk in 2 innings.

Game 2: Freddie Freeman had a HR and 2 RBI at Gackle Park where the Neverwinter Alpacas beat the North Dakota Bio Sea Slugs by the
score of 4 to 2. Neverwinter jumped on top of North Dakota in the top of the 3rd inning scoringa single run on 2 hits. Neverwinter had 10 hits for the night. Erick Fedde (2-5) got the win allowing no runs in 6 innings. Ryan Walker earned the save, his 7th. George Kirby(3-2) was the losing pitcher. Kyle Tucker rolled a 20 on his 9th inning 3-run HR chance. 'He gutted it out' Sam said of Fedde. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'

Game 3: In his first AB of the season, 27th man callup Trent Grisham went yard at Gackle Park as North Dakota beat Neverwinter by the count of 4 to 1. North Dakota set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Bailey Ober(5-2) and North Dakota. That was all the run support Ober required. North Dakota finished with 13 hits while Neverwinter ended up with 3.
Mason Miller earned his 6th save. Nathan Eovaldi(3-6) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Game 4: After Kyle Tucker's grand salami in the 2nd inning off B. Miller, ND thought this game would be a walk in the park. But NV scored single runs in the 3rd, 4td, 5th, 7th, and 8th to stun North Dakota and take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th.

In a dramatic ending, North Dakota scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Jackson Merrill started the inning off right when he lined a base-hit. Merrill got a great jump and stole second easily. After an out was recorded, Brandon Lowe then doubled bringing in a run to tie the game. Mookie Betts stepped in and he stroked a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for North Dakota and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Neverwinter could not get
the win.

Kenley Jansen(2-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings andallowing no runs. Ryan Walker(0-3) was charged with the loss in relief. Arnie was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Sam, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!'

(2/10)
New Orleans takes 3 of 4 from Constantinople, to swap 2nd and 3rd place with each other.

Game 1: CON 8, NO 3. Even though NO out hits CON 16-9, CON out homers NO 5-0 to take game one. Lugo with the win, Wheeler the loss.

Game 2: NO 4, CON 1. NO scores 2 in the first and two in the second which was more then enough as 6 NO pitchers scatter 7 hits. Estevez the win in relief, Clase the save. Gil took the loss.

Game 3: NO 6, CON 2. NO opens up a close 2-2 game scoring 4 in the eight to break it open. NO left an amazing 15 running on base, leaving the bases loaded without scoring in three consecutive innings thanks to Ragans' 9 walks. Smith the win in relief, Suarez the loss.

Game 4: NO 7, CON 3. NO scores in each of the first three innings and didn’t look back. Sale the win, Clase another save. Steele took the loss. Judge hits his only HR of the series.

Draft Day, Saturday March 28.

(2/7)
The Bioluminescent Sea Slugs bombarded the demoralized Assholes 8-3, 7-2, and 9-1 in the first three games of today's series at Gackle Park before Jed's luck finally turned in the finale, 4-1, to avoid the sweep. The series win jumps North Dakota into sole possession of first place, while Jed's thoughts turned to Nick Kurtz and the upcoming SOMBILLA draft.

In game 1, Lawrence Butler cracked two homers off Schwellenbach and Lindor added another to back Reynaldo Lopez (3-2) and his 10 strikeouts.

Game 2: Bailey Ober struck out 13 batters at Gackle Park as North Dakota beat the Oceanus Assholes 7 to 2.

Ober(4-2) was simply too much for the Oceanus batters. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and no walks in 8 innings. North Dakota had 6 hits for the game and Oceanus had 3.

Hunter Greene absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work. Jed was upset after the game. (I'll say. And before the game and during the game and during every game and after the series). 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.' (His actual comments were far more dispirited).

Game 3: Jed actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead, until the third, when Butler (again, his 4th of the series), Bride, and Tucker went back to back to back to tire out Webb. Newly acquired Red Sox Willson Contreras added another HR in the 9-1 rout as ND out-scored OC 24-6 and outhomered them 10-1 in the first 3 games. Chirstopher Sanchez (3-2) had a strong outing. He allowed only 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. North Dakota rapped out 16 hits for the night.

Game 4: The only close game that actually required strategic managing (as opposed to managing innings and at bats). In an entertaining game at Gackle Park the final score was the Oceanus Assholes 4, the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs 1. Oceanus went ahead for good in the 4th inning plating one baserunner using 2 hits. Josh Hader earned the save with a perfect ninth. The victory went to Dylan Cease who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Bryan Woo(2-4) took the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings.

Star of the series was Lawrence Butler (whom Jed ordered hit after his 4th home run). 5 for 12 (.417), with 6 runs, 4 HR, 8 RBI and 3 walks.

Draft Day, Saturday March 28. And Jed confirmed he will be there in person!

(2/3) New Orleans takes 3 of 4 from Bay City
to pull within a game of first place.

After being swept from North Dakota, New Orleans has been hot, taking 3 of 4 from Bay City and winning 6 of 8 over all.

Computer recaps…
Game 1: Zack Wheeler mowed down 10 Bay City batters as the New Orleans Ellis defeated the Bay City Rollers by the score of 7 to 1 at Doc Ellis Field. Wheeler simply dominated Bay City. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. New Orleans finished with 11 hits in the victory. The loss was charged to Corbin Burnes. He was knocked around by New Orleans, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Home runs by A.Judge and M.Semien.

Game 2: Tyler Glasnow went 6 and two third strong innings as the New Orleans Ellis topped the Bay City Rollers by a score of 4 to 3. New Orleans scored 2 runs in the 7th inning. The big moment was provided by Aaron Judge who thrilled the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer. Bay City threatened in the 9th but New Orleans was able to put down the rally. The winning pitcher was Jason Adam who allowed 2 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Carlos Estevez was credited with his 1st save. David Robertson was the loser in relief. Home runs by V.Guerrero Jr, R.Greene and E.Suarez(back to back to back, and the next hitter was an HBP, NOT intentional!). A.Judge had the NO HR.

Game 3: Luisangel Acuna smacked 2 homeruns as the Bay City Rollers defeated the New Orleans Ellis 6 to 2 at Doc Ellis Field. Acuna was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He ripped a solo home run in the 2nd inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 7th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 9th inning. New Orleans was out-hit by Bay City, 11 hits to 8. Zac Gallen was the winner allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Chris Sale(0-1) was charged with the loss. He served up 4 gopher balls in 7 innings. Home runs by V.Guerrero Jr, R.Laureano and L.Acuna for BC and A.Riley for NO.

Game 4: In an entertaining game at Doc Ellis Field the final score was the New Orleans Ellis 7, the Bay City Rollers 4. Matt Wallner provided much of the offense. He doubled which plated a run in the 1st inning and belted a three-run homer in the 5th inning. For the game New Orleans out-hit Bay City 11 to 7. Ronel Blanco got the win allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Blanco got relief help from Emmanuel Clase who gained credit for his 1st save. Paul Skenes was hit with the loss. Despite the loss, he struckout 14 New Orleans batters in 8 innings. Home runs by R.Greene and S.Perez for BC and M.Wallner and A.Riley for NO.

One computer note: Robin astutely observed that there was no chance for Sal to block the plate for a play in game 4 (last number of safe range, first number of out range). Arnie determined that his computer setting was incorrect. A reminder to all computer managers that MAX Rule must be set so you can check "Catcher blocking of the plate".

Draft day, Saturday March 28.

Twits Notes: (2/3)

(1/31)
It was anything but a routine split as Bay City (virtually) headed to the Rehoboth Parking Lot for a reunion with (Why can't I get players like that?) Ryan McMahon. See Game 2 write up for the thrilling/infuriating details.

In Game 1, OC center fielder Julio Rodriguez blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Oceanus Assholes defeated the Bay City Rollers 5 to 2. Hunter Greene had a strong outing, surrendering only 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.  Oceanus ended up with 9 hits for the game while Bay City had 6. Daniel Hudson was credited with the save. Former Asshole Corbin Burnes was the losing pitcher.  He gave up 8 hits and 2 walks and 5 runs in 6 innings.

The computer write up for Game 2 said:
26,782 fans watched an exciting game at Rehoboth Parking Lot.  The Oceanus Assholes topped the Bay City Rollers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
BUT Computer Strato cannot account for Jed's low fences*, so what appeared to be the final out of the game on a 1-5 homer chance by BC's Eugenio Suarez against Holton was, in fact, a homerun, tying the game. The computer immediately went to showing the stats, and because it thought the game was over, we were unable to "undo last play," and so had to continue the game playing with cards and dice (The 1 CF J-Rod had an 85% chance of robbing the home run (4-20), but I rolled a 1 on the 1-3 homer chance on the disputed play). Vesia managed to get the Assholes out 1-2-3 in the ninth, and pushed across a run in the tenth, even though slow-footed Sal Perez was the ghost runner, on an RBI single by defensive replacement Austin Hays. The limited Michael Kopech pitched a 1-2-3 tenth to give BC the home crowd-deflating win, 4-3.

Game 3 was really an Oceanus 3-2 win .Dylan Cease delivered 8 solid innings. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.  Bay City tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. Joel Payamps earned the save. The loss was charged to Zac Gallen, who still struck out 7 batters in 4 and 2/3 innings. Game 2 hero Suarez tripled, and OC's Buxton homered.

Robin earned the satisfying split in Game 4, thanks to Paul Skenes being her starter. Vladimir Guerrero Jr had 4 hits and the Bay City
Rollers beat the Oceanus Assholes 2 to 0. Kopech gained credit for the save.  Ryan Pepiot was charged with the loss.  He allowed 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings. Asshole Wilyer Abreu was the unlikely triple hitter in this homerless game. Newly retired aged David Robertson pitched three 1-hit innings in relief of Skenes.

Star of the series (other than Jed's fences) was Vlad, who had another strong series, hitting .375 with a double and 4 RBIs, which considering BC hit .173 as a team, with only one homer [but we made it count!]), constituted a massive offensive output. BC spent many of its at-bats trying (and frequently succeeding) to get on base via poor Asshole defense. OC frequently countered by beaning BC players.

* Oddly, none of the other teams that play with low fences (Neverwinter and North Dakota) have encountered this issue. Despite setting his fences low, Jed's version of the game won't recognize it. Strat-O tech support had no answers. Arnie's suggestion to reinstall his computer Strat-O was impractical in the middle of a series.

(1/27)

After rolling only two HR rolls in the entire series against North Dakota, New Orleans bats woke up taking 3 of 4 against the Assholes, to jump back into 3rd place.

Computer round ups:
Game 1: Right fielder Aaron Judge launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New Orleans Ellis outscored the Oceanus Assholes 6 to 4. Judge had a good day at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 3rd inning and smacked a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Zack Wheeler got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Emmanuel Clase recorded his 1st save. Hunter Greene was given the loss. Although losing the contest, he whiffed 12 batters in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Ketel Marte cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Rehoboth Parking Lot where the Oceanus Assholes beat the New Orleans Ellis in 10 innings by the score of 7 to 6. Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Oceanus came out on top in the 10th inning. James Wood ripped a base-knock making Oceanus the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Oceanus totaled 10 hits on the afternoon. Blake Treinen went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Griffin Jax suffered the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up 1 hit and no walks.

Game 3: In a one-sided affiar at Rehoboth Parking Lot the final score was the New Orleans Ellis 9, the Oceanus Assholes 3. Oceanus never recovered after New Orleans took the lead in the top of the 4th inning plating 2 runs using 2 hits. After two were out Matt Olson initiated the scoring spurt when he drew a walk. Ha-Seong Kim next to the plate and he lashed a single. Dylan Cease then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed ball. Aaron Judge followed and he doubled scoring two teammates. New Orleans out-hit Oceanus for the game, 10 hits to 5. Ronel Blanco allowed 2 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Cease was tagged with the loss. While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 16 batters in 9 innings.

Game 4: Designated hitter Brent Rooker connected with a home run as the New Orleans Ellis bested the Oceanus Assholes in 10 innings 4 to 2 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. New Orleans came out on top in the 10th inning. After two were out Matt Olson got things going when he blasted a two-run home run. The win went to Ryan Yarbrough who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Yarbrough got relief help from Emmanuel Clase who gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Joel Payamps in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 1 hit in 1 inning.

It was the second sweep of the weekend for the Commissioner/Bay City household, as the Rollers took 4 close games (two in extra innings) from the Sea Robins, to finally reach .500 and achieve a four-way tie for third place, dropping Madaket into seventh place. Edited computer write-ups follow, as this series was played on the computer.

Game 1--The Bay City Rollers nipped the Madaket Sea Robins in 10 innings 3 to 2 at Sandover Fields in a hard fought pitchers' duel, as both BC's Burnes and Mad's Gilbert went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs. In the 10th inning.  Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch.  Bobby Witt Jr. drew a walk to load the bases. Vladimir Guerrero Jr then hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. The win was credited to Tim Herrin, who went 2 innings allowing no runs; Porter Hodge was credited with the save. Kevin Kelly suffered the tough loss, as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

Game 2--In what may well have been his final appearance in Madaket, Yu Darvish had a one-hitter with no walks through 6, but BC's bullpen almost blew it. BC got out to a 6-run lead after two innings, thanks in part to a Vlad 3-run homer, and held on for the 6-5 win. Darvish went 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run.  Madaket had homers by Alvarez, Ozuna, and the unlikely Neto but fell a run short.

Game 3-- Gerrit Cole had an impressive outing at Sandover Fields, where the Rollers beat the Sea Robins in 10 innings, 2 to 0. The game was a scoreless tie after nine. After an out was recorded, Vlad was yet again the hero, hitting a 2-run homer in the 10th. Porter Hodge went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs for the victory. Hunter Gaddis took the loss in relief; he surrendered 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Game 4--In an entertaining game at Sandover Fields, Soto finally homered for the home team, but his solo shot was their only run, as BC completed the sweep, 4-1. Bay City brought 3 runs across the plate in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Corbin Carroll, who silenced the crowd, as he clubbed a three-run home run. The win went to cute Joe Ryan, who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. Ryan got help from uncute Jose Butto, who was credited with his first save. The loss was charged to Jack Flaherty.

Madaket out-homered Bay City 4 to 3 for the series, as BC hit only .218 as a team, but with a couple of exceptions (Kerkering and Garcia), the BC pitching was excellent, with a 1.89 team ERA, and, shockingly, only 10 walks allowed in 38 innings. Hitting star of series was Vlad, who batted .500 with a double, 2 homers, and 7 RBIs.

The Bioluminescent Sea Slugs made their annual trek up to Marblehead through the Arctic Blast only to find themselves in ...New Orleans. The team was happy to escape Gackle Park where they'd just lost 3 of 4, and with an incredible luck streak at Doc Ellis Field they swept into a tie for first place with the Manatees. Meanwhile, New Orleans fell back into a 3-way tie for 4th.

The Sea Slugs could do no wrong. In game 1, the first six batters reached base, the first 5 scored to tire out Wheeler. ND hit 3 homers in the first three innings (Betts a 2-run shot) and Lowe (a 2-run and 3-run homer), one more HR than NO hit in the entire series  (outhomering them 11-2 in the series). A Horwitz solo homer, Merrill 2-run homer went along with 2 homers from Butler as they pounded the Ellis 19-5, with 7 home runs (and several tired rbi hits as well) off a beleaguered Zach Wheeler. Adding injury to insult, Judge got injured for 2 games.

George Kirby pitched a complete game 8-hit shutout in game two, winning easily 6-0. Mayor Pete Alonso (called up from AAA Moose Jaw for the series) homered and Betts added 2 rbis.

Games 3 and 4 were close, but every ND managerial move worked out well. A Rooker 2-run HR in the bottom of the first gave the Ellis  their first lead of the series, and Riley's rbi made it 3-0 where it stayed until the 5th inning. ND's Parades homers, Lindor singles and steals 2B and Grichuk knocks him in to make it a 3-2 game. Top of the 7th with one out and 2 on,  Grichuk hits a 3-run bomb off Jason Adam to give ND the lead, 5-3. ND adds an unearned run to make it 6-3. Meanwhile, Jansen, Estrada, Fairbanks and Mason Miller (save) pitch the final 4 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball to clinch having to do Twits Notes.

Game 4, Jackson Merrill homers on the first pitch from Glasnow. NO's Xavier Edwards homers off Woo in the 4th to tie it 1-1. Merrill triples to lead off the 6th and Betts singles him in to give ND the 2-1 lead. An rbi double by Betts in the 8th scores mutant Pavin Smith (who'd walked) to give ND the insurance run and make it 3-1. Bottom of the 9th, New Orleans gets 2 on with one out, against Munoz, but Riley grounds out. Matt Olson comes in to pinch hit, and ND calls for Jeremiah Estrada, who'd spent the previous week hanging out at Randy's house. Randy delivered Estrada this morning just before I left for Harold's, and Estrada delivered the final out of the game and series for his third save and the sweep.

Star of the series was Jackson Merrill 9 for 18 (.500), 10 runs, 5 RBI, 1 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 1 BB

Draft Day is only 9 weeks from today, Saturday March 28!

Randy hosted Eric on their laptops last night, and tho things got off to a slow start (Eric was not quite ready despite having days to prep) the games were played without too much glitching. I think Randy must have set the game to Dirt and Stone Infield and Blinding Sunlight in Outfield. Eight total errors (5 for MK, 3 for FW) were committed and many hits that just eluded decent fielders, but surprisingly only 2 unearned runs (against MK of course) came across the plate.

Scores:
Game 1: FW 6-5
Game 2: MK 8-5
Game 3: MK 6-3
Game 4: MK 3-2

If not for a terrible managerial decision in game 1 (and the aforementioned unearned runs), the Sea Robins would have swept. It was the bottom of the 10th. MK had just taken a one-run lead, but Wax loaded the bases with one out against Gaddis. The computer set MK's infield in, which Randy pointed out before rolling, giving Eric the sage option of changing to corners in. Ever stubborn, but really just being a dunderhead, Eric kept the infield in, and Walker hit an easy two-hopper gbSSA+ just to the right of the drawn in Neto. Randy tried...

Other than that, Randy and Deede have a new kitty, Jax. I'm assuming Randy has no problem with posting his pic, but parents can be weird.

CN takes 3 out of 4 from BC to take over first place from always idle New Orleans.

Game 1: The matchup of Lugo vs Burnes started off as a defensive struggle knotted at 0 after 4 innings.  BC got on top 1-0 in the 5th, but CN came up in bottom of the 5th and after Trout struck out and got injured for the 2nd time of the season, they grinded a BB, followed by 3 singles then another BB and BPS to bring up Devers with 3 runs in and the bases loaded. He lined out to bring Burnes within one out of getting out of the inning. But Seager, who had been the 3rd out twice previously, hit a comebacker to Burnes who threw it over Naylor’s head and into the dugout for 2 runs and Burnes was done for night. Lugo gave up a Ball Park homer (1-10) to BC’s Witt but after a Duran 2-base error he settled in to get a victory 6-2 with Rasmusen in relief.

Game 2: BC's Skenes versus CN's Gil and you would expect this to be the pitcher’s duel but Gil gave up 3 in the first and then Skenes gave up 4 on 2-run shots from Ohtani and Tatis. BC came back to score 4 in the 5th on back to back homers from Suarez and Naylor to go up 7-4.  CN then batted around in the 6th to score 5 runs and go up 9-7 as Harper, Nootbar and Ohtani hit homeruns. BC came back in the top of the 7th to the game at 9-9 on Stephensons 2nd 2 run double of the game. CN then went up 10-9 on a Stephenson passed ball in the bottom of the 9th, but Naylor drove in a run with 2 outs in the top of the 9th and Hodge held CN down to get the game to extras knotted at 10. The ghost runner (Naylor) scored the top of the 10th on no hits and it was up to Ohtani to tie it up on a double in the bottom of the 10th.  BC found 2 extra base hits on Chapman’s card in the top of the 11th to go up again this time by 2 (13-11). Tatis singled in the bottom of the 11th to get Swanson over to 3rd.  Harper hit to the 1 SS - Witt - a double play ball that scored a run and Raleigh hit into an out as CN lost 13-12 in an exciting heart breaker.

Game 3: The battle of the lefties - BC's Snell vs CN's Ragans.  BC scored 5 over the 1st three innings behind homers from Correa, Teoscar and Hays. But then things started to turn as Snell, the human rain delay, started to miss the plate and CN scored 2 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th behind Harper, Ohtani and Jose Ramirez homeruns, tiring Snell. To add insult to injury, Correa struck out and injured himself for the second time of the season and Albies strckout and also injured himself for the 2nd time of the season.  CN ended the game with 10 unanswered runs 10-5.

Game 4:  The finale saw Gallen start versus Garret Stone and BC again went up early on a run in both the 1st and 2nd, but CN scored 6 runs in the second on homers from Nootbar, Devers and Seager to tire Gallen. It was 10-3 after 5 innings. BC scratched a run in the 6th and CN came back with a 3-run homer from Donovan to go up 13-4. BC answered back with 3 run Teoscar homer off of Rasmussen to make it 13-7.  BC kept hitting off of the CN bullpen but they held on for a 13-8 win in the quaint band box which is CN 1910 Park.

Albies stayed back from the charter to enjoy the many Aquariums around the Park and noted waterfront amenities.

Future Wax journeyed to Gackle Park for a series that evoked the days when these two franchises routinely faced off in the World Series, usually going to game 7. 3 games were decided by 1 run, the other by 2. In the end, shoddy ND defense tipped the scales in FW’s favor, and they took the series 3-1.

The first game was a pitching duel between Baz and Kirby. Elly De La Cruz homered in the 1st, Carpenter tripled, then Cronenworth knocked him in. After that, ND’s Kirby and 4 relievers held FW scoreless the rest of the way. Baz gave up just 1 run in 6 IP: on Wilson Contrares’ double play after B. Lowe tripled in the 2nd. But Lowe tied the game on a solo shot immediately after Baz exited the game, knotting it at 2-2. In the bottom of the 9th, ND’s Lowe led off with a single, advanced on a ground out, then scored the winning run on a walk-off single by pinch hitter Pavin Smith.

The second game was a seesaw affair, with FW scoring 2 in the 1st, answered by ND’s 4 in the 2nd for a 4-2 lead. FW tied it at 4 with runs in the 3rd and 6th, only to see Paradas’ homer to put ND ahead again in the bottom of the inning. But FW scored 2 in the 8th, with the key hit being a Cowser double. Erceg closed the door with 2 innings of perfect relief, securing the win for Yomamoto.

In the third game, Cowser homered in the 3rd, only to be answered with a Paradas blast in the bottom of the frame (1-1). FW scored 2 unearned runs after a Betts (1e13) error in RF, only to have ND immediately answer again, with 2 runs (3-3). Another Betts error in the 7th led to 1 more unearned run (+2 earned), helped by Cowser and Carpenter homers. Arnie scored a run in the 9th, but left the tying runs on base, losing 6-4. Gausman (8 IP) got the W, Duran the SV.

Things looked bleak for Arnie in the final game, with FW jumping to a 6-3 lead, then adding 2 more runs in the top of the 7th. ND miraculously tied the game (8-8) with 5 runs on homers by Tucker, Horwitz, and Lindor in the of the inning. But FW’s Christian Walker homered to lead off the 9th, and Duran retired the side in order to end the game, and Arnie’s hopes of a split series. (Nick Martinez got the win, despite yielding 5 runs to the first 5 batters he faced. We verified that the 5-runs in one inning tired pitcher rule applies only to starters and Martinez has a relief tired factor of (3) so giving up runs to his first 5 batters faced did not tire him out).

Cowser was the series MVP, with 3 home runs and 6 RBIs.

(1/15)  The Alpacas were happy to leave the frozen north take three out of four against the Sea Robins at Sandover Field. This means that one game separates 4th place from 7th place.

Game 1:  Neverwinter 6 - 2. In his season debut, last year's Cy Young Award winner Kyle Bradish pitched five shutout innings allowing only one hit and two walks to get his first win of the year. Jordan Westburg hit a 3-run shot off Sea Robin starter Logan Gilbert in the top of the 5th .  Neverwinter added another three runs in the top of the sixth accounting for their runs.  Sea Robin bomber Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run shot off Ryan Helsley in the bottom of the 6th but that was all the offence from both teams. Catcher J.T. Realmuto had 2 base hits; overall Neverwinter out-hit Madaket 9 to 5. Logan Gilbert was the losing pitcher. He gave up 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Game 2:  Neverwinter 3 - 2 Game two was a great pitching duel between Sea Robin ace Tarik Skubal and Alpaca Michael Wacha. Yordan Alvarez hit a 1-3 ballpark homer in the bottom of the 1st inning getting Madaket the lead but the Alpacas tied it up in the top of the 2nd on a Jonathan India single and then Alpaca Lane Thomas tied it up with a solo shot of his own in the top of the 3rd inning.  It remained that way until the top of the 8th when the aforementioned Lane Thomas drove in Alpaca shortstop Gunner Henderson giving them a 2-run cushion.  Alpaca closer Raisel Iglesias came in in the bottom of the 9th gave up a walk and two hits, an RBI single to Zack Neto to tire him.  Neverwinter then brought in Ryan Walker to record the last two outs and get the save.  24,693 fans were treated to a fine game at Sandover Fields as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. Madaket had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The win was credited to Michael Wacha who went 6 innings allowing 1 run. Tarik Skubal took the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Game 3:  Madaket 11 - 2. In the only blowout of the series, and an embarrassing outing for the Neverwinter Alpacas pitching staff, Madaket jumped on Alpaca ace Bryce Miller for 5 runs over six innings, including 3 homers and then Alpaca reliever Ryan Helsley promptly threw gas on the fire in the bottom of the seventh, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits ensuring the Sea Robins wouldn't get swept at home.  Framber Valdez was brilliant, giving up only one run in the 7th inning, a solo shot to Michael Conforto.  Juan Soto, Marcell Ozuna, Cody Bellinger, Brice Turang and defensive replacement Ian Happ all had two hits, Ozuna, Bellinger and Rutschman hit homers in the win.  Marcell Ozuna had a good evening at the plate. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 1st inning and slapped a base-hit scoring a run in the 7th inning. Madaket had 14 hits for the night while Neverwinter had 8. Bryce Miller was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 innings of work.

Game 4:  Neverwinter 8 - 4. In the series finale, Madaket spotted Neverwinter a one run lead in the top of the 1st inning but then scored four runs off Alpaca starter Erick Fedde on six hits, almost tiring him out. Fedde then pitched five more scoreless innings, not allowing any baserunners after the 1st inning. Neverwinter added a second run in the 3rd inning. New Chicago Cub Alex Bregman made it a one-run game in the top of the 7th hitting a solo shot, giving the Alpacas hope. Eric brings in his closer, Hunter Gaddis in the top of the 8th for an attempt at a two-inning save. He is hit hard, allowing four runs, only one earned in the inning, including a solo shot from Alpaca 1st baseman Freddie Freeman.  The Alpacas add another in the top of the ninth to secure the win. Cole Sands earned the victory with a fine relief performance. He did not allow a baserunner in his 1 inning. Neverwinter ended up with 11 hits for the game while Madaket had 7. Hunter Gaddis suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks in 1 inning.

CN Takes 3 out of 4 from Oceanus to Hold Serve with New Orleans, and hop into third place by percentage points.

For some reason CN’s computer game version was throwing off a schedule error that would not allow League Games so Jed kindly hosted.

Game 1:  Muncy got the Assholes started with a ballpark homerun (1-19) to give them a lead.  CN came back in the bottom of the first for a run when Chisholm allowed a 3-base error on a Seager flyball that scored Ohtani.  The game went back and forth as Oceanus would go up 3-1 in the 3rd and then Ohtani and Duran hit homers in the 3rd and 6th to tie the game at 3.  Then Marte hit a 2 run homer in the 7th to give the Assholes a 5-3 lead, only to have CN’s Ohtani hit a 3 run shot in the bottom of the inning to give CN a 6-5 lead.  Then in the 8th, Muncy hit his second homer of the game to give Oceanus a 7-6 lead.  Duran answered in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 7 with a leadoff homer but CN's lefty killers could not get to Holton so the teams went to extra innings. Marte came up for the Assholes in the 11th and hit his 3rd home run of the game to give them a 9-7 lead and they held on for the win. It looked like it was going to be a long night for Manatee fans.

Game 2:  This game featured a matchup of lefty Ragans (CN) versus the crafty veteran Logan Webb (Oceanus).  Jed got up early again as Marte and Edman hit solo shots in the first to give them a 2-0 lead.  CN however immediately got its first 6 batters of the game on base except for Harper who was sent to the bench on a called strike 3 on a 3-2 count. Santander capped the 6 batters with a 3-run homer to tire Webb.  Webb was staying in to take the beating and as often happens he settled down and after 5 innings he was ahead 8-6, as his team hit Ragans hard and often without tiring him.  However, after all the game 1 OC relief usage, Webb tried for one more inning and that was his undoing as CN had a dink and dunk inning that led to 4 runs and the game was never close again.  (All basically without tired strikeouts and on their own cards so it was really not Webb’s fault).  The game ended 12-9, CN, in another pitcher’s duel.

Game 3:  Stone (CN) versus Swellenbach (Oceanus) and it looked like it would be the first low scoring game. Oceanus scratched out a run after Devers failed to make a 3Bx play, going for a single, but they only got 1 run and left 2 in scoring position.  CN's scrappy Brendan Donovan came up with 2 men on and 2 outs in the 4th and rolled at 2-4 - got the split roll - for a 3 run shot to put CN up for good.  Duran added a 2 rund shot in the 7th to give CN the 5-1 victory, with Tom's relief staff doing their jobs.

Game 4:  The deciding game of the series was a preview of Raleigh’s next season as he hit a 2-run homerun in the 2nd to give CN a 2-0 lead.  Suzuki was able to halve the lead when Lowe singled and stole a base (2-20 guy against the -4 battery) and he scored on the short double from Suzuki. Raleigh hit another 2-run homer in the 5th to give CN a 4-1 lead.  Suzuki scored a run in the 6th to again halve the lead to 4-2.  Duran hit a 2-run shot in the 7th to give CN a 6-2 margin that they would not relinquish as CN won the game and series.

Duran was a wrecking ball, hitting .529 going 9 for 17 with a  walk amassing 5 homeruns, 10 RBI and scoring 7 runs.

(1/11)New Orleans took 3 of 4 from Madaket in a Sunday morning series in Doc Ellis Stadium to leapfrog the Sea Robins into first place.

Game 1: NO 10, MAD 6. NO was up 10-2 going into the 9th when MAD made it close scoring 4.  Wheeler was the winner, Gilbert the loser. Adam the save. NO hit three HR’s (Wallner, Profar, Rojas), MAD one (Ozuna), which was the difference.  MAD also missed a BPHR (1-19), the first miss of the season in Ellis Stadium.

Game 2: NO 8, MAD 1.  It was all NO in game two, with Williams the winner and Flaherty the loser.  NO again out homer MAD three (Judge, Rooker, Riley) to one (Alverez)

Game 3: MAD 8, NO 1.  The teams swapped scores in game three, with MAD winning 8-1.  King was the winner, Glasnow the loser. Soto hit the only HR in the game, which was marked by wild NO pitching (7 walks, 4 HBP’s)

Game 4: NO 4, MAD 2.  In the battle of ace lefties, NO took game four 4-2, Sale with the win, Crochet the loss.  Judge and Rooker with HR’s for NO, Ozuna for MAD.  Clase picked up the save.

Draft Day, March 28.

(1/10)
In a series rife with HBPs on both sides, home team Bay City took 3 of 4 from Future Wax to move to within 2 games of 4th place.

In Game 1, Burnes survived a shaky start to strike out 9 in 6 2/3 innings to get the win over Yamamoto, who tired in the fifth when the Rollers scored all five of their runs (3-run Witt HR followed two batters later by 2-run Greene HR). Adames homered for FW in the 5-3 game.

Game 2 was a 12-2 blowout for BC, even though they lost two of their starters (Carroll and Albies) to 2-game injuries. BC's Teoscar Hernandez had 4 RBIs batting ninth on two homers and a sac fly. Correa also homered (as did FW's Adames, again) in the win for cute Joe Ryan over Gausman.

Randy won Game 3 handily, 6-1, with Houck having a perfect game through 5 1/3 before it was broken up by a single by injury call-up Jeff McNeil. No homers for either team, but Yu Darvish (in his final SOMBILLA season--start planning your team retirement gifts now) hit two batters in the fourth, both of whom came around to score in a 5-run FW inning.

Game 4 was a tense battle, but BC held on for the 7-6 win in a game in which neither starter (BC-Cole, FW-Imanaga) was effective. FW's Walker and BC's Hays and Laureano homered. Injury call-up Ceddane Rafaela playing out of position in RF (manager's fault) almost cost Robin the game when he allowed a double as a 3 that Robles as 2 would have handled.

Each team hit 3 batters in the series, and Uceta had 2 saves, tripling BC's saves total.

Draft Day, Saturday, March 28

(1/6)Future Wax started the New Year right by winning 3 one-run games, before losing the final game to the home team Alpaca’s 5-1.
Five teams are now within one game of first place, and six teams are within two games of first place.
After no runs and few hits for 4 innings, Elly De La Cruz smashed a 3-run triple in the 5th to give FW the lead. In the 7th, McCarthy doubled in 2 runs to Gausman, but the FW bullpen held the line. Gausman got the win, Erceg the save. Wacha took the loss.
Moreno’s solo shot in the 8th inning was the only run of the game. Junis got the win in relief, and Duran the save. Luke Weaver got the loss.
Sam then lost a second game 1-0, this time on an unearned run in the 7th. Bregman booted a ball, making possible an RBI single from Cronenworth. Nick Martinez got the win in relief, Duran the save. Hurter got the loss.
Gunnar Henderson put to rest any thoughts of a sweep, with an RBI single in the 3rd and a 3 run homer in the 5th. Eovaldi got the win, allowing just 1 run on a Pasquintino solo shot. Olson took the 5-2 loss.

Draft Day, Saturday March 28

(12/22)
In another unsatisfying/satisfying split, BC took the first two games and the Assholes took the last two in Ryan McMahon's emotional return to Bay City (and now I can once again say, "Why can't I get players like that?"). Edited computer write-ups follow.

Bobby Witt Jr had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Bay City Rollers defeated the Oceanus Assholes by the score of 5 to 0. Bay City came up with 3 runs in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Witt Jr., who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he doubled, bringing home two baserunners. Despite losing, Oceanus out-hit Bay City 11 to 6. The win was credited to Corbin Burnes, who went 7 innings; Schwellenbach was the loser.

In Game 2, BC beat OC in 11 innings by the count of 8 to 7. The Rollers were up 4-1 heading to the 8th, but Asshole Chourio hit a 3-run homer off BC's best reliever, Uceta. Jed scored 3 in the top of the 11th against an ineffective Butto, but Bobby WItt Jr. was the hero with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the inning against Treinen. Butto was the undeserving winner in a game started by the cute Joe Ryan (6 innings 1 earned run). "They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage," Witt Jr said, "next time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher. [Ed. note: they did not.]

Bay City failed to capitalize on the feel-good win in Game 3, despite a fine start from soon-to-retire (from the SOMBILLA) Yu Darvish, who went 7 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits. He was matched by Tanner Bibee, who also went 7 innings with 1 earned run on 3 hits. The Oceanus
Assholes beat the Bay City Rollers in 10 innings by the score of 2 to 1.  After two were out in the 10th, former Roller Ryan McMahon singled. Daulton Varsho then laced a one-base hit scoring the run.  Oceanus had just 5 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Daniel Hudson, who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Tyler Holton earned the save. Porter Hodge took the loss in relief.  He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

In Game 4, The Oceanus Assholes had an easy time of it, defeating the Bay City Rollers by a score of 8 to 3. Ryan Pepiot pitched a fine game.  He went 7 innings and surrendered up 6 hits and 1 walk. Joel Payamps recorded the save. Jose Butto [more like Butthead] was tagged with the loss;
he surrendered 3 runs and 1 hit in 1 inning.

Bobby Witt Jr. was the star for BC, batting .444 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, and 12 RBIs! (Commissioner note: this may be a record for a 4-game series, but who knows). Also of note, Sal Perez threw out a couple of would-be base stealers in Game 1 and walked in consecutive games (possibly a SOMBILLA record for him).

For Jed, in limited action, Hoerner, Abreu, Wood, and Jeffers all hit .500, and in less-limited action, Kirk and Chourio each hit .429.

.....

Merry Christmas from the SOMBILLA Grinch himself! On that note, I remind you to send your stats to Tom.

(12/20) All's fair in love and Strat-O, as North Dakota climbed into 2nd place today, winning a series at Gackle Park in a battle of the spouses.

Bay CIty jumped in front 3-0 in game 1 on rbis by Naylor and S. Perez off R. Perez (and a run-scoring dp) in the 2nd. A solo HR by Tucker makes it 3-1. Lindor homers off BC's Corbin Burnes in the 4rd and Mookie doubles in two more to give ND the 4-3 lead. Another rbi hit by BC's Sal Perez ties it in the 4th, and Bobby Witt parlays a single and error on ND 3b Bride to take back the lead 5-4 in the 5th. Bottom of the 7th with 2 on and 2 out, ND pinch-hitter let's go Brandon Lowe gets a 1b(x), which BC's Josh Naylor misplays into a single and error scoring 2 runs to give ND the lead back 6-5. Another solo homer by Lindor in the 8th makes it 7-5, and Jeremiah Estrada gets BC in order in the 9th for his first save.

Game 2 is more of a pitchers' duel between Skenes and H. Brown. But the Sea Slugs roll well on their own cards, getting Skenes to pitch his worst game of the year. Solo HR's by Sea Slugs Horwitz and Bride make it 2-0, and Horwitz singles in Jackson Merrill (8 for 18 on the series), who had tripled, to make it 3-0. RBI's by Vlad and Riley (Greene) make it a 3-2 game into the 7th. ND tires out Skenes with a walk, single and walk and with 2 outs Herrin walks Mookie to score Lindor and give ND a 4-2 lead. With 2 outs in the 9th, Mason (blown save) Miller gives up a game tying 2- run homer to Riley Greene to tie it up. But in the bottom of the 9th, Butler singles with one out, steals 2nd (off R. Garcia), and Derek Hill hits a RF(x) to Corbin Caroll, who is a 2. He rolls a 3 for the walkoff single.

R. Greene hits another HR (off Woo) to give BC the 1-0 lead in game 3, then follows it up with a 2-run shot in the 4th to make it 3-0. An Albies HR makes it 4-0 before ND scores 2 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the 4th to make it 4-2. In the 7th, a 3-run homer by Iglesias off Munoz (HR 1-2, out otherwise), ices the game for BC, final score 8-2.

Game 4 looks to be a laugher for the Bioluminescent Sea Slugs: 4 runs in the first (capped by a Horwitz 3-run homer) and 5 runs in the 4th (a P. Smith 3-run homer and Butler homer) off Cole make it 9-0 for ND. ND empties its bench to save at bats from all their limited batters in the lineup. But in the 5th, BC scores 5 runs on 6 hits (including rbi doubles by Naylor and Perez) to tire Kirby, and its a game. In the 8th, Mason (erstwhile closer now setup man) Miller walks the bases loaded and is tired. With 3 tired ND relievers, Miller stays in and gives up a 2-run tired single to Ozzie Albies, and now it's a 9-7 game. But Kenley Jansen nails down the 1-2-3 save to win the series.

(12/18):Oceanus and Neverwinter alternated wins to split.  The first two games were as tight as could be and the last two games, while not blowouts, felt over pretty early.  Pitching dominated as Neverwinter compiled a 2.48 ERA and Oceanus a 2.37 ERA for the series.  For the Alpacas, the trio of Cedric Mullins, Jake McCarthy and Alex Bregman went 15 for 42 (.357 BA).  For the Assholes, Mark Vientos - replacing the recently traded Jose Ramirez - hit 2 homers and had 4 RBI.  Brief game summaries below.

Game 1: Third baseman Mark Vientos jacked one out of the ballyard at Rehoboth Parking Lot as the Oceanus Assholes beat the Neverwinter Alpacas in 11 innings 3 to 2.Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings.  Oceanus won the game in the 11th inning.  Newly-acquired Ryan McMahon laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Jackson Chourio stepped into the batter's box and he lined a one-base hit (through the drawn-in infield) making Oceanus the winners and sending the 19,048 fans home happy.  Oceanus managed 7 hits in their victory. The win went to Daniel Hudson who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Brant Hurter was the loser in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Game 2: At Rehoboth Parking Lot, the Oceanus fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  Bryce Miller finally bested his Oceanus opposite, Ryan Pepiot , by the score of 2 to 1. The Assholes struck first when Nathaniel Lowe selected a 1 split card on a Triple 1 out otherwise chance in the 2nd inning. But that was it for Oceanus.Freddy Freeman blasted a homer to tie the game in the top of the 4th.  J. T. Realmuto smacked a long ball in the top of the 5th and that was that for the game.  Both teams ended up with 6 hits on the afternoon. Raisel Iglesias preserved the game for Miller, recording the save.  Pepiot was hit with the loss.  He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Game 3:The Oceanus Assholes defeated the Neverwinter Alpacas by a score of 6 to 2 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Tanner Bibee mostly managed to dance his way out of trouble for Oceanus.  He was reached for 9 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.  Oceanus banged out 8 hits on the afternoon. Erick Fedde took the loss.  He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks. 12 Alpacas were left on base in this one.

Game 4: The Neverwinter Alpacas defeated the Oceanus Assholes by a score of 4 to 1 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Neverwinter jumped on top to stay in the top of the 5th inning when they came up with 2 runs on 3 hits.  Alex Bregman had a homer, Freddie Freeman a couple of RBIs.  Oceanus was out-hit by Neverwinter, 8 hits to 5. Nathan Eovaldi was the winner allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Eovaldi got relief help from Raisel Iglesias who gained credit for his second save of the series.  Logan Webb was charged with the loss.  He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.  Webb is having a rough go this season.

(12/16)
Constantinople beat Madaket 3 out of 4 last night to take over 4th place and hand the Sea Robins their first series loss of the season.

Game 21/25:  Soto put Eric up early 2-0 and his pitcher Gilbert struck out the first 7 batters he faced before CN's Tatis missed a ballpark homer. Nootbar doubled to end the K fest - sort of - as Gilbert then struck out 2 out of the next 4 hitters.  Gilbert hit Donovan and then Raleigh hit a home run off Gilbert’s card to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the 5th.  MK's defensive replacement Happ doubled in a run in the 7th and then Eric went into hold the line mode. The Manatees' Devers came up with the bases loaded and one out in the 8th and grounded into a double play looking to book his flight to North Dakota, who has made several trade offers. With 2 outs in the 9th, CN's Rengifo his a BPS against Gaddis and then was allowed to run 1-12 and ran into the last out of the game. Replay was momentarily considered but then declined.  (In the alternative reality in which he succeeded on the steal the next 2 batters walked and singled tiring Gaddis and Nootbar walked to tie the game and then Tom just stopped).

Eric has a great pitching staff and in his balanced pitcher’s park, the difference among his 3 lefties is diminished and he has an interesting bullpen (2 lefties, dominant righty closer, 2 unbalanced right handed relievers (one each way) and with the new additions CN had a lot to think about. Waking up in the middle of the night lets the team consider and reconsider such lineups and how to the pinch hit from different spots.  So 2 lefty starting pitcher lineups were considered and were solid for days until the final version was created and was unveiled for the last 3 games….

Game 22/26: MK's Crouchet gave up 2 runs in the first inning on a Ramos homer and then Ramirez hit a 3-run homer in the 5th to put CN up 5-0 as his luck was coming into play. Devers did get a pinch hitting opportunity with the bases loaded and he hit a open double and was thrown out at third while driving in 3 runs. With 2 more solo shots CN wins 11-1 and Stone was the game winning pitcher.

Game 23/27:  MK's Skubal watched Ramos hit a ballpark homerun out for the 2nd out, but then gave up a single and 2 walks to face Swanson in the clutch who delivered to give CN a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the 2nd straight game.  Ramirez later scored on a passed ball and then a Skubal error led to a 2-run 6th inning and a 5-0 lead after 6 innings. Eric's Santana hit a 2-run ballpark shot (in any park) off Steele and then the first 2 hitters of the 7th reached, tiring him completely. Soto tripled to bring the game to 5-4.  With 1 out in the ninth and runners on 1st and 2nd (the first one reaching on a 1 on a catcher x with no one on), Soto returned to the plate against Santana and grounded into a game ending double play as CN started to breath again with the 5-4 squeaker to take a 2-1 series lead.

Game 24/28:  It's the final game for the series and a potential satisfying split for Eric. He was convinced that luck was completely against him.  The first 6 innings was a pitchers duel as neither team could do anything, but Ohtani came up with 1 out in the 7th hit a RFx that went for a double and 2-base error leaving him at 3rd. A SSx roll for Swanson who was playing in allowed a single that scored Ohtani for the 1st and only run of the game.  CN got runners into scoring position but could not push any across. Once again CN faced the ninth inning with a 1-run lead and CN's Santana facing a right/left/right lineup.  He struck out Bart and then hit Alvarez and then struck out Ozuna and the faced the pinch hitter Happ. He struck out to end the series.  The pivotal play of the game was a Ozuna death roll (2-5 – column might be wrong but it was a 5) that was between a clean homer and a 1-18 homer chance with one one to end the 6th inning.

(12/15) It was a classic unsatisfying/satisfying split as Bay City took the first two games and New Orleans took the second two, with Ellises rallying in honor of their manager's birthday. Edited computer write-ups follow.

Corbin Burnes and Zack Wheeler treated the Bay City fans to a fine pitching duel, with the Rollers eventually emerging as victorious, 2-1. J. Naylor (BC) and Riley (NO) each had solo homers. Vesia, Hodge, and Uceta held on to get the win for Burnes.

Paul Skenes (3-0) had an impressive outing in Game 2 as the Bay City Rollers  beat the New Orleans Ellis 7 to 1. Bay City tallied 5 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Riley Greene, who came through for the home fans when he launched a three-run homer.  The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Skenes went 7 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Ronel Blanco ended up with the loss.  He allowed 3 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Aaron Judge had 2 base hits and Chris Sale was almost unhittable as the New Orleans Ellis bested the Bay City Rollers 3 to 0 in Game 3. In the top of the 5th inning New Orleans went on top for good. Sale went 6 innings allowing no runs for the win. Emmanuel Clase got the save.  Zac Gallen was the hard-luck loser.  He gave up 1 run and 5 hits in 7 innings.

Austin Riley touched them all and had 3 RBI as New Orleans beat Bay City by a score of 7 to 2. Griffin Jax was dominant in relief.  Overall New Orleans out-hit Bay City 12 to 6. Blake Snell was the losing pitcher.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

(12/13) North Dakota traveled to the Waxhome and nearly emerged with a sweep, settling for a series win and 3rd place in a series that took almost 4 hours.

Game 1 started ominously for the Sea Slugs as both Betts (1-12) and Horwitz (1-13) missed home run chances. Sure enough, O'Neill (twice) and Turner nailed their BP HR chances (1-12, all on 5-11 rolls on Ober's card) and Future Wax takes a 3-0 lead into the 6th inning. Shane Baz has a 2-hit shutout through 5 2/3 innings when Horwitz singles, Wilsson COntreras doubles and Kyle Tucker hits a 3-run HR to tie it up. Yelich then singles. Baz is replaced by Nick Martinez and Grichuk greets him with a rbi double to give ND the 4-3 lead. Pete Fairbanks, AJ Puk, and Jansen pitch the final 4 innings with 2-hit ball and ND takes game 1, 4-3.

Game 2: Hunter Brown (5-hitter) and Tanner Houck (1-hitter) match goose eggs through 6 innings. A sac fly by Trea Turner gives FW a 1-0 lead in the 6th. But in the ND 7th, Derek Hill greets former ND reliever Matt Strahm with a leadoff pinch-hit HR to tie it up. Refsnyder singles and Jackson Merrill doubles him in to make it 2-1, ND. Jeremiah Estrada and Mason Miller pitch a perfect 8th and 9 innings for the Sea Slugs who win 2-1.

North Dakota comes out swinging in game 3, going up 5-0 against Imanaga  after 3 innings. Lindor, Soler (2 rbis), and Grichuk hit back to back to back doubles to key the runs. A solo shot by Grichuk in the 6th makes it 6-0. Lower case asshole Manny Machado hits a 2-run HR off Kirby to make it 6-2, and in the 7th, Tyler O'Neill hits a 2-run pinch hit HR off Puk to make it 6-4. But Puk, Estrada, and Fairbanks pitch the final 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball and ND wins 6-4.

In the finale, Christopher Sanchez and Reese Olson match goose eggs through 5 innigs. Jonah Bride homers to lead off the 6th and the Bioluminscent Sea Slugs are thinking about a sweep. A sac fly by Pages ties it in the bottom of the 6th and Sean Murphy cracks a 2-run shot off Sanchez to make it 3-1. Top of the 9th Erceg in to mail down the save for FW but with one out Betts doubles and Merrill cracks a 2-run homer to tie it up. Randy loads the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. With the infield and outfield in, Mason Miller strikes out Pederson and Cowser.
Randy loads the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th. With the infield and outfield in, this time FW's Gabriel Moreno hits a fbB, which becomes a long single to win the game for Future Wax

(12/7):
In a low-scoring series at Icewind Dale Corral, Sam won the battle for last place, as Bay City took 3 of 4.

Game 1 was a pitchers' duel featuring Corbin Burnes (7 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 0 earned runs) versus B. Miller (6 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run). Bay City emerged victorious 2-1, thanks to solo homers by leftys Corbin Carroll and Riley Greene. The game was won by Bay City with a run in the top of the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded, Riley Greene delivered a solo blast.  Bay City had only 6 hits for the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Porter Hodge(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. Ryan Walker(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 1 inning.

Game 2 was a relative blow-out, with BC winning 6-1. Yu Darvish took a no-hitter into the 6th inning; he gave Bay City a solid outing.  He surrendered 2 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Darvish had his no-hit bid broken up by Mike Yastrzemski, who homered with nobody out in the 6th inning.  Bay City finished with 12 hits while Neverwinter ended up with 3.

Sam took Game 3 in another low-scoring affair, 3-1. Nathan Eovaldi(1-0) and Blake Snell(0-1) treated the Neverwinter fans to a fine pitching duel. The Neverwinter Alpacas eventually emerged as victors over the Bay City Rollers. Eovaldi had a solid outing for Neverwinter.  He went 6 innings surrendering 6 hits and 1 walk.  Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save.

Game 4 came down to the wire, but the Rollers prevailed, 3-1. Joe Ryan(1-0) and Michael Wacha(0-1) dueled it out, with the cute Ryan and the Bay City Rollers coming out on top. Bay City jumped on top to stay in the top of the 5th inning, scoring one runner using 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Victor Robles hit a bases-empty home run.  Edwin Uceta earned the save with a perfect ninth.

Star of the series was the BC pitching staff, with an ERA of 1.29. Vlad batted .500 with a double and a homer, and Robles had 2 homers. Anti-star for Bay City was E. Suarez, who went 1 for 14 (with 2 walks) and 8 strikeouts.

(12/6)
It was a beautiful Sunny day at CN 1910 Ballpark and despite the team having a seasonal sinus infection they came out hitting and took the series 3-1 over the sweating Neverwinter Alpacas to pull into a 3-way tie for 4th place.
Game 1 was a pitching gem as Lugo pitched 8 scoreless innings to beat the Alpacas 6-0. Devers hit 2 home runs to bring the home team a much-needed win. Raleigh was injured in the 5th inning and for the first time this year CN did not have Will Smith on the bench because he was at the birth of his second child. (Ok technically his son Lawton was born October 2024 right before the World Series, but I had flipped a coin on who would not be on my roster for the series, and he lost. Of course Raleigh was injured, luckily with no ill consequences.)

Game 2 was an offensive showcase for the Manatees as they scored 12 runs to the Neverwinter 1 run. Santander and Ohtani had homers and Donovan had 2 ballpark shots to lead the team. Defensive replacement Brenton Doyle was injured late for 2 games allowing Casas a chance to play in the series.

In Game 3 Steele gave up 7 in the first, but CN does not have the bullpen, so he stayed in and pitched 4 scoreless innings. Meanwhile Neverwinter's Wacha gave up 2 in the first and 4 in the 2nd on a Ballpark 3 run homer from Harper. He had come in for Casas, who was injured in the first inning. The Manatees then tied it in the 5th on a solo shot from Duran (off the tired Wacha). Both tired pitchers left the game after 5 with the game all tied at 7. Suarez, the erstwhile CN closer, starts the 6th inning. He gave up a BPS to Westburg and after an out, Gunnar came to bat and hit a triple to give Neverwinter a 8-7 lead which they never relinquished to make the series 2-1.

Game 4 was the chance for NV to ge a split and CN's Gil looked like he would allow it, giving up 2 singles and 2 walks in the first for the early Alpaca lead. Nootbar hit a 3 run shot in the 2nd, and soon it was 4-2 Manatees. Gil decided to help NV get a series split by giving up a Freeman single, Burger double, Bregman Ballpark Homer sac fly. Then Mullins walked to chase him with 2 men on. At the end of the Alpaca 6th it was 6-4 and looking like an unsatisfying split for the Manatees. Raleigh doubled in the bottom of the sixth, and Ohtani drove him in with a single and with the bases loaded, Seager hit into a double play as the Manatees make it 6-5. But then the 7th happened. 5 of CN's first 6 batters had hits, capped by a Ramos Ballpark Homer on Hurters* card and it was 10-6, CN after 7. Harper got on after a Gunnar error and the Manatees scratched out an insurance run. But Chapman gave up a 2 run double and 2 base error, and Chapman subsequently got tired but the Manatees held on for the 11-8 nailbiter.

....

Meanwhile, Eric and Arnie decided to play on the computer on Friday with Eric hosting(!). He had previously successfully hosted playing Jed, so fingers were crossed. Eric successfully added the player pictures to his computer Strat-O setup, agreeing that it enhanced the game. But in the 2nd inning of game 1, Juan Soto inadvertantly robbed Tucker of a HR. (Eric's fences are high, so robbing shouldn't have been allowed.) After undoing the play, and manually adding back Tucker's HR, we were stymied by computer Strat-O not letting us go back to dice mode. We tried numerous things, nothing worked. We ended up finishing the game with dice over the phone (won by ND 7-5, hitting two 1-3 BP homers). Even Jed was at a loss for how to handle this; it had never happened to either of us, and Eric said he successfully undid plays when hosting Jed previously.

Exasperated, we decided to continue on Saturday. Naturally, we enountered another snag getting the "Error - League stats file not found on disk" when trying to begin. Thankfully, I remembered a Jed email from a year ago with a workaround to solve the issue, which worked! Thank you Jed! Eric hosted the 3 remaining games on the computer without issue (although Eric hit at least two 1-3 BP homers of his own, causing eyebrows to raise regarding the randomness of these rolls.)

The most notable thing in actual game play for this split, was Tarik Skubal's near perfect game/no-hitter in game 2 Skubal had a perfect game through 6 2/3 innings and lost his no-hitter with two outs in the 8th (on a Yelich single via a GB 1B(X). Eric had meant to put in a defensive replacement).

Schedule surveys due a week from tomorrow (Sunday 12/14). All teams get days off after game 20. Send your stats to Tom.

(12/3) Standard SOMBILLA split orthodoxy states that if you win game 4, you've earned a satisfying split. In a SOMBILLA paradigm shift, North Dakota is claiming an unsatisfying split despite winning game 4. The manager claims he should have easily won game 2, but for missing a BP HR (1-18) in the 7th inning and having the winning run thrown out at the plate on a 1-12 in the bottom of the 9th. Harold points out that the Sea Slugs had the luck in game 1 (hitting on a triple 1-5, out 6-20 for example), and that the luck evens out. Indeed Harold, in this bizarro Strat-O split, happily accepts the satisfying split in ND's ballpark, despite losing game 4.

Game 1: It's Wheeler (ERA 8+ according to Harold) against R. Lopez. Two batters into the bottom of the first and it's 2-0, Sea Slugs, after Merrill's 2-run shot. The aforementioned lucky triple by Jewish second-sacker Spencer Horwitz leads to another run and it's 3-0. After Judge doubles, a ridiculous single and error by Jackson Merrill (2e2), and a sac fly by Schwaber make it a 3-2 game. A sac fly by Wallner in the 5th ties it up 3-3. MVP of the game Horwitz smacks a 2-run shot in the 6th to put the Sea Slugs up 5-3. Judge and William Contreras trade homers and it's 6-4 entering the 9th inning. It's (Mason) Miller time! With 2 outs and a man on first, Matt Wallner hits a shocking 2-run BP homer off Miller's card to tie it at 6. Bottom of the 9th: Betts walks, Willson Contreras is HBP. Yelich, saving a limited at bat, bunts them over, and Lindor hits the walkoff single off Griffin Jax.

Game 2: An rbi single and solo HR by Riley gives NO the 2-0 lead after 4. Meanwhile ND strands 7. They finally tag Glasnow in the 5th when Lindor smacks a 3-run HR to take the 3-2 lead. Semien's pinch-hit homer on the first pitch from ND reliever Estrada ties it a 3 in the top of the 7th. Mutant Pavin Smith hits a BP HR (1-18) in the bottom of the 7th. Rolls a 19, and Michael Harris (a "1") makes the homer robbing catch on the subsequent 1-3. Bottom of the 9th. Smith singles and Lowe comes in to pinch run. Merrill doubles, and Harris guns out Lowe at the plate on a 1-12 to send the game to extras. Riley's rbi double scores ghost-runner Judge to make it 4-3, and the Ellis' closer Clase pitches a perfect 10th for the save.

Game 3: Aaron Judge had 3 homers and 8 rbis, all off lefty Christopher Sanchez in this laugher. Semien adds a homer and 3 hits, and Rooker also had 3 hits. Final score 13-3. The Bioluminescent Sea Slugs out-managed themselves with an odd lineup against the first true opener they've ever seen - Carmen Mlodzinski. Thankfully it didn't matter.

Game 4: Ronel Blanco and George Kirby locked up in a terrific pitchers' duel in the finale. A sac fly by Wallner made it 1-0 in the first, which held up through 5 innings as Blanco yielded just 1 hit with 10 strikeouts. But Lawrence Butler smashed a 3-run homer in the 6th to chase Blanco and that was enough to hold up for the 3-1 win. Kirby, Puk, Estrada, and Miller (save) combined on a 7-hitter for the Bioluminescent Sea Slugs to gain the unsatisfying split.

Host Future Wax takes 3 of 4 from NeverWinter

Manny Machado cracked 2 homeruns and 3 RBI and Shota Imanaga reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts at The Wax Home where Future Wax beat Neverwinter 10 to 5. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Imanaga got the win, despite giving up 5 runs in 7 innings. Matt Strahm got the save.  Nathan Eovaldi surrendered 3 homeruns in 6 innings, and was tagged with the loss.

The Future Wax Candles nipped the Neverwinter Alpacas 3 to 2 at The Wax Home in a hard fought contest. Future Wax went ahead in the 6th, scoring one runner on 2 hits. Neverwinter threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Olson yield 1 run in 6-1/3 innings. Jake Junis got the save. Wacha pitched 6 innings, allowing just 7 hits and no walks, but got the loss.

The Candles bested the Alpacas 7-4. Spot starter Lodolo went 6-1/3 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 2 walks, for the win. Future Wax had 9 hits for the game. Nick Martinez got the save. Woods-Richard was the losing pitcher.

Sam avoided a sweep, as NW nipped FW 2-1 in 10 innings 2 to 1. NW had only 4 hits, but one was Gunnar Henderson's ghost-runner scoring double in the 10th. Gausman allowed just 2 hits in 7-1/3 IP, but that included a game-tying home run by Westberg in the top of the 8th. Matt Strahm was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 2-2/3 innings of work.

-------

Meanwhile, It was a classic satisfying/unsatisfying split as Oceanus fell behind 2-0 to New Orleans in the series only to salvage games 3 and 4.  The teams combined to hit 22 homers.  Stars for Oceanus included Ketel Marte with 2 doubles and 3 homers, Wilyer Abreu with 3 homers and Hunter Greene, who pitched 8 innings allowing only 2 runs (both solo shots) and striking out 12.  For New Orleans, Aaron Judge hit .571 with 3 doubles and a homer and both Patrick Bailey and Austin Riley had 2 homers.

(11/27): In a series featuring a rainout and injuries to both of Future Wax's catchers, Oceanus took 3 out of 4 at home.  Oceanus had a team ERA of 1.50   The starters were stellar, providing 29 1/3 IP with just 2 earned runs.  Jackson Chourio hit .308 with a homer for the Assholes.  For Future Wax, Yamamoto pitched extremely well, allowing only one run in 6 1/3 IP with 12 Ks.  Kerry Carpenter hit .333 and Colton Cowser had a couple of doubles and a homer for the Wax.  Below are the slightly edited computer generated game summaries.

Game 1: Tanner Bibee had an impressive outing as the Oceanus Assholes defeated Future Wax by a score of 4 to 2 at Rehoboth Parking Lot. Bibee came through with a virtuoso performance against the Future Wax hitters.  He surrendered only 2 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.  Oceanus ended up with 9 hits for the game while Future Wax had 4.Josh Hader, having a rough go this season, gave up 2 solo shots in the 8th inning (Randy Arozarena and Colton Cowser) to give the Wax some hope.  But Daniel Hudson earned the save.  Reese Olson suffered the loss.  He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Game 2: Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out 12 batters as Future Wax outscored the Oceanus Assholes 3 to 1.Future Wax won the game with a rally in the 9th inning plating 2 runs on 2 base hits.  Kerry Carpenter led off and started the attack as he delivered a one-base hit.  Trea Turner stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Andres Gimenez then doubled, which was good for two runs. Oceanus could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.

Of note: Trea Turner played catcher when Gabriel Moreno was injured.  He threw out Seiya Suzuki trying to steal second. The winning pitcher was Jake Junis who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Lucas Erceg earned the save.  Tyler Holton was tagged with the loss in relief.

Game 3:Hunter Greene whiffed 10 batters as the Oceanus Assholes outscored Future Wax 4 to 0. Greene contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.  The Assholes scored 3 in the bottom of the 1st inning and a Jose Ramirez solo shot in the 4th completed the scoring for the game. Kevin Gausman took the loss. But did preserve the bullpen pitching all 8 innings.

Game 4:The Oceanus Assholes had a relatively easy time of it at Rehoboth Parking Lot defeating Future Wax by a score of 7 to 2. Jackson Chourio provided much of the offense.  He bombed a two-run dinger in the 5th inning, smacked a single in the 6th inning and ripped a base-hit bringing in a run in the 8th inning.  Oceanus out-hit Future Wax for the game, 14 hits to 7. Dylan Cease went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Tanner Houck was charged with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

(11/22):

Tom, Randy and Robin—my favorite Sombilla peeps besides Sam, Jed and Harold, of course—made the trek to Eric’s leafy palace in Plymouth for an early season bash. In the first set he took 3 of 4 from Robin, and earned a very satisfying split with Randy in the second.

Scores Vs Robin

Gm 1: MK 4-3

Gm 2: BC 6-3

Gm 3: MK 3-2

Gm 4: MK 7-3

Scores vs. Randy

Gm 1: FW 10-7 (11 innings)

Gm 2: FW 8-5

Gm 3: MK 2-0

Gm 4: MK 7-3

For the Sea Robins, Skubal ran his record to 3-0 in 3 starts on the season with another sterling performance, going 7.3 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run, no walks and 13 Ks. For the Rollers, Paul Skenes made his Sombilla debut in Game 2. He struck out Soto to start his career, then gave up a double to Bart and a 2-run blast to Alvarez. After that? 6.3 innings without surrounding a hit or walk, to go with 8 Ks. Masterful.

Against Future Wax, the Sea Robin’s vaunted pitching got shellacked the first two games. The first game went 11 frames, with MK's Vest barfing up 4 doubles to FW in the 11th. The Wax scored all 10 of their runs from the 6th inning on. Gilbert took the loss, his 3rd of the year. Game 2 started like Game 1 ended for FW, pounding Micheal King for 5 runs on 3 dingers in the 1st, adding two more runs in the 2nd. King took one for the team and went the distance, and remarkably gave up only one more run. Crochet got MK back in the win column with his second stellar start of the season, going 7 and surrendering 2 hits, no runs, 2 walks and 8 Ks. Hard to say who Randy’s star was, but Robin and Eric both agreed that Manny Machado has a punchable face, if that helps…

(11/21) After much delay and techno deficiencies on Eric’s part, Jed and Assholes finally moored off Madaket Beach to play some small ball.

Scores:

Game 1: OC 3-1

Game 2: MK 3-2

Game 3: MK 5-1

Game 4: MK 5-4

In the first game, rookie Schwellenbach stifled the Sea Robins, tossing 7+ innings of shut out ball. All runs sort of squeaked across the plate, except for Suzuki’s solo blast of Gilbert in the 2nd.

Games 2 and 4 were tight. Game 2 went 10 innings with Vest getting the win, and Game 4 saw the Assholes chip away at a 5-2 deficit to make it, well, tight. Game 3 was the laugher of the series, and was really over by the 9th inning.

The computer game turned a 5-4 double play for Jed, which we’d never seen before (or I hadn’t, anyway). With runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, a hot shot was hit to Ramirez at 3rd, who stepped on the bag and threw to 2nd to complete the DP. After several seconds of bellyaching by Eric, Jed pointed out that shit like that happens in baseball all the time. He’s right, shit like that does happen. But not, apparently, on the board game. Unless I missed that all these years…

Neverwinter snags three of four from the visitors.

The ballpark made a difference as Neverwinter missed on numerous BP HR chances.  North Dakota, while not hitting BP HR's, did seem to hit quite a few BP singles, consistently, all night long.  The injury bug hit both teams, but the Sea Slugs especially.

Game 1:  North Dakota 5 Neverwinter 3

The solo shots by Lindor, Merrill and Contreras were the difference, including an insurance bomb in the 9th to secure the victory for the Bioluminescent Sea Slugs.

In a tight game it was the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs 5, the Neverwinter Alpacas 3 at Icewind Dale Corral. North Dakota took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one runner. North Dakota out-hit Neverwinter for the game, 11 hits to 8. Hunter Brown went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Mason Miller earned his 1st save. Michael Wacha was charged with the loss.

Game 2:  Neverwinter 10 North Dakota 9

North Dakota tired out Alpaca starter Woods-Richard in the 2nd inning, who then pitched three more strong innings to get the win.  Neverwinter chased Sanchez in the 5th putting up a 5 spot of their own.  North Dakota made it close scoring 2 off Tyson Miller in the 8th, but the Alpacas held on for the win.

Michael Conforto lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 7 RBI and Ryan Walker closed the door on North Dakota as the Neverwinter Alpacas beat the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs by a score of 10 to 9. Conforto was in a groove all day. He stroked a one-base hit which was good for two runs in the 1st inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning and smacked a three-run homer in the 5th inning. Simeon Woods-Richard was helped out by Walker who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded the save. Cristopher Sanchez was given the loss. He was unable to control the Neverwinter offense and allowed 10 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. Conforto was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I want to see how that game looks on paper.'

Game 3:  Neverwinter 4 North Dakota 1

Miller went 8 strong and the only run he allowed was unearned.  The Alpacas scored one in the 1st, a pair in the 3rd and an insurance marker in the 8th.

Bryce Miller racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the Neverwinter Alpacas defeated the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs by the score of 4 to 1 at Icewind Dale Corral. Miller was very good in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. Neverwinter totaled 9 hits on the afternoon. Raisel Iglesias was credited with the save. George Kirby took the loss. When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Miller offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy this afternoon - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

Game 4:  Neverwinter 4 North Dakota 2

In the final game, each team many chances to score, but failed.  Neverwinter hit into thee double plays, all to defensively challenged Jonah Bride squashing three threats 🙂.

In a close game it was the Neverwinter Alpacas 4, the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs 2 at Icewind Dale Corral. Erick Fedde pitched well for Neverwinter in their victory. He went 7 innings surrendering 9 hits and 3 walks. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. Ryan Walker gained credit for his 2nd save of the series. The losing pitcher was Bailey Ober. 'He gutted it out' Sam said of Fedde. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'

(11/17): North Dakota outscored CN 42-18 in its home opening series. Tom did salvage a game to avoid the sweep, but none of the games were close. In fact, the only managing we did was managing limited players' at bats and pitchers' innings.

CN actually struck first in game 1, jumping out to a 2-0 lead with 4 singles off Chris Sanchez. But ND loads the bases with one out in the 2nd off Seth Lugo, and mutant Pavin Smith hits a grand salami. Jackson Merrill almost added a 3-run homer but Heliot Ramos robbed him. But the roof caved in for Lugo in the 3rd as ND scored 7 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. They continued to pile on, adding a touchdown and a late field goal to win 17-6. The Bioluminescent Sea Slugs had 17 hits; 12 different hitters scored.

In game 2, the much-maligned Bailey Ober pitched a complete game 5-hit shutout as ND won 10-0. Lawrence Butler and Steven Kwan each 3-run homers to pace the Sea Slugs. It didn't help CN that SS Corey Seager got injured and missed the rest of the series.

Similar to game 1, the Manatees jumped in front 2-0 in game 3 in the first inning on a 2-ron shot by Santander. But ND scores 6 in the 2nd on 5 hits and 2 walks; a 2-run single by Paredes and 2-run double by mutunt Derek Hill lead the way to tire out Ragans. Brandon Lowe adds a 2-run shot in the 6th as ND wins another laugher 11-3. Woo, Puk, and Munoz shut down CN on 7 hits.

The Manatee bats finally woke up in game 4, with Santander (another first inning 2-run homer) and Devers (3-run homer) tiring out Reynaldo Lopez to make it 6-0 after 2 innings. ND, up to its first three game tricks briefly made it a game, with Hill's-2 run homer and a Betts rbi to make it 6-3, but CN hung on for a 9-4 victory as Steele, Bido and Rasmussen.

Notes: SOMBILLA Week 1 MVP Randall Grichuk did not even make ND's 26-man roster for this series. No idea who MVP of this series was; it's late, I'm tired and the scoresheets are mess of first downs, yards after the catch, and special teams long gains.

(11/11):

New Orleans takes 3 of 4 from Neverwinter.  Computer generated recap except for game 1 which had a glitch.  An exciting game 4, with Glasnow perfect until the 8th when he gave up a hit.

G1: NW 3 – NO 1
Woods-Richardson pitches 7 strong innings, giving up two hits in the win.

G2: NO 6 – NW 5
The New Orleans Ellis won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Neverwinter Alpacas at Doc Ellis Field pulling it out in their last at bats, 6 to 5. New Orleans won the game with a run in the 9th inning.  Patrick Bailey lined a base-hit.  Miguel Rojas followed and he hit a single.  After an out was recorded, Brandon Marsh then stroked a single making New Orleans the winners and sending the 30,281 fans home happy.  New Orleans had a total of 11 hits for the game.  Emmanuel Clase(1-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Ryan Helsley(0-1) was the loser in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 1/3 of an inning.

G3: NO 4 – NW 0
Chris Sale racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts and Michael Harris slammed a homerun as the New Orleans Ellis defeated the Neverwinter Alpacas by the score of 4 to 0 at Doc Ellis Field. Sale(1-0) put on a good performance.  He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.  The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

G4: NO 6 – NW 0
Tyler Glasnow had a strong outing as the New Orleans Ellis defeated the Neverwinter Alpacas by the score of 6 to 0 at Doc Ellis Field. New Orleans tallied 4 runs in the 3rd inning with the help of 4 hits.  That early run support was all that Glasnow(1-0) required.  New Orleans had 7 hits for the night while Neverwinter had 2.  Nathan Eovaldi(0-1) was charged with the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 4 walks.

(11/7):
I figured out how to resolve the issue that led to the suspension of game 2 of the North Dakota vs. Oceanus series.  Computer users see below for an easy fix.

Anyhoo, game 2 was a lot like game 1.  Very close and decided by a walk off homer.  So I won 2 games dramatically and got shellacked for the rest of the series.  The quintessential satisfying (for me) / unsatisfying (for Arnie) split.

Here are the slightly-edited computer-generated game notes:

Second baseman Ketel Marte rocketed 2 homeruns at Rehoboth Parking Lot as the North Dakota Bioluminescent Sea Slugs lost a heartbreaker to Oceanus Assholes by thescore of 5 to 4.

Oceanus jumped to a 3-0 lead after 4 innings (including solo homers by Ketel Marte and Jose Ramirez) but the Warheads had it tied at 3 after the top of the 6th (Kyle Tucker had a solo shot).  Oceanus then went up 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th only to have North Dakota tie it back up in the top of the 8th.

It was at this point, when the Sea Slugs came up to bat in the top of the 9th that the fatal error occurred and we had to suspend the game and move on.

The deciding run was scored by Oceanus in the 9th.  After an out was recorded, Jackson Chourio hit a bases-empty home run making Oceanus the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.  Oceanus rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Tyler Holton (1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The losing pitcher was Jeremiah Estrada (0-1) in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up 1 hit and no walks.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To avoid getting an error when replacing the DH with a (or changing the DH to a) position player and inserting the pitcher into a batting slot you simply need to change one setting:

1. Make sure you have selected the correct league on the left side of the game
2. Go to the Options menu and select Lineups and Usage
3.  Make sure Use Actual Pitcher Batting Cards is unchecked

If you get in the same situation Arnie and I did, there's an easy fix involving cloning or renaming a file in the Strat-O-Matic Baseball > Rosters directory (you need a file called 202499.fre).

(11/5):
Game 1: Oceanus wins 5-4 in 11 innings. Jed jumped out in front
on a Buxton 2-run homer in the first in the season opener for both teams. After the Assholes go up 3-1, ND comes back to tie it with solo homers by Tucker and (here comes) Bride after 5. It stays that way until the 11th (ND leaving the bases loaded in the 10th). Mutant Pavin Smith gives ND the 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th with an rbi single. In the bottom of the 11th, Lindor (1e14) boots a routine grounder and Jazz Chisolm hits a walkoff 2-run homer off Munoz.

Game 2: A tense back and forth 4-4 tie game in the 8th inning is suddenly blown up by the computer when ND attempts to put the DH in the field and have the pitcher bat. It actually let me do that, (ie put the DH into the field), but when it was ND's turn at bat an error message popped up stating that we had not loaded the pitchers' hitting cards and it blew up the game.  A check on the help file said to uncheck 'use actual pitcher batting cards' under Options --> Lineups and Usage, which we did. But loading the saved game (autosave.sav) as well as another file called "badgame.sav" (!) produced the same error message. (Note: there havent been any actual pitcher batting cards since 2021 after which the NL adopted the DH). We tried a few different things playing with various files but could get the game to reload. We could not finish the game by cards and dice because we had no access to the box score for the game to recreate exactly where we were. So Jed took screen shots and will ask Strat-O for assistence. They are usually pretty good with responses but this is a bizarre one.

Game 3: Randal Grichuk cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Rehoboth Parking Lot where the North Dakota BioLuminescent Sea Slugs beat the Oceanus Assholes by the score of 9 to 2. Grichuk was in a groove all day.  The Oceanus fans hated to see him approaching the batter's box.  He banged out a single knocking in a run in the 2nd inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 6th inning.  North Dakota finished with 14 hits while Oceanus ended up with 9. A.J. Puk(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings and allowing no runs. Ryan Pepiot(0-1) was given the loss.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 5 innings.

One footnote: Max Muncy hit a home run late in the game, which Jed asked to undo (because he didn't mean to bat him since it was 9-2 and Muncy is limited). This would have raised eyebrows around the league had the game been closer.

Game 4: A close 2-1 game is broken open in the 6th inning by who else, Randal Grichuk, who smashed a 3-run homer off Tanner Bibee, tiring him out. A frustrated OC manager sees his team leave the bases loaded twice. OC did manage to tire out Hunter Brown and make it a 6-3 game, but Jansen, Munoz, and Estrada pitch 3 1/3 innings of hitless ball to close it out and secure the task of writing Twits notes.

In the three completed games, Grichuk was 5 for 9 with 3 homers and 9 rbis.

(11/2):
Fun to see the gang. It was even fun spilling an entire glass of water on Randy’s team (and his lap) just as the games began. Awful beginning, but we all learned what a wiz Randy is with a toaster oven. (Ed note: and apparently having a team doused with water is conduscive to winning). Then, winning 3 of 4 from Sam was also fun. And weird. If low-scoring is weird…

Game 1 NV 1-0

Game 2 MK 6-1

Game 3 MK 2-0

Game 4 MK 4-1

A rough day for Sam. He won the first game 1-0, barely. Westburg hit a triple 1 or out to start the 7th off Gilbert, and came home on a Realmuto single. The firm of Miller, Miller and Iglesias pitched a 3-hitter against a sleepwalking Madaket squad. Sam then went on to score just two more runs, one unearned, over the final three games. Not that Madaket blew open any doors. If there was a hitting star it would Ian Happ off the bench, who walked twice, singled and hit a 3-run pinch homer in game 4 to erase NV’s 1-0 lead in the 7th. All starters were stellar.
